Could Grambling be replaced in Bayou Classic?

Re: Grambling be replaced in Bayou Classic

I mean you can look at it from a business/corporation side...they are investing money into this event and GSU fans (and ours) are not showing up to these games...So of course what's the next thing that these businesses will do..complain to the host about wasted dollars..and thus this is the push for something to be done about the event and money that's pumped into it.....I mean Clayton knows who toes to not to cross to be honest..he knows SU fans wont tolerate his B.S. so he shifts the negativity on GSU, but in the same breath, you gotta understand money is actually being put into this event and it's not obviously producing results to these businesses liking...So I could understand the grumbling from T.C. (shruggs)...

He just wanna be in control sooooooo bad though is my only gripe about dude

Re: Grambling be replaced in Bayou Classic

My question is "Who runs the Bayou Classic?"

Is it the combination of Southern and Grambling or is it this Dome Management team.

I didn't think anyone besides the 2 schools involved where in charge of it. They are the ones that book the stadium for that weekend and are the only ones that can make decisions about it. If the dome is trying to say who will play in that game, I hope that neither school would agree to play anyone else in it. The schools have the power about who they will play and when.

You typed it before me. I think this is a travesty and as a graduate of Southern University, I am personally insulted. Why should we give of fu@k what Robert Bruno thinks? So he’s running things now? Like you said, only thing the LSED should be concern with when comes to Bayou Classic business is getting their rent on time. I don’t care if only the football team shows up. All those years Tulane play in the Dome in front of those 10 fans nobody said a word. Now we all telling Grambling ”Mr. Cholley say if yawl field hands don’t come in the house and act right he not gon let you back in the house no mo.” Fu@k that, they are going to be pushing Southern out next. I rather play on each other’s campuses then begging white folks to come inside.:angry:

Sidenote: Bayou Classic tickets just went on sale last week. Funny how this all comes out now.

But yeah, this is pretty damn sad. Bruno is in NO position to say who can or cannot play in the Bayou Classic. To say that Grambling can't play in the BC is almost the equivalent to saying that Southern must play in it. Who is he to make this comment.

I don't know all of the details, but I guess this is what happens when the folks at GSU and SU decided part ways with the Bickerstaff Group (a black owned company) that previously managed and organized the Bayou Classic, for the local (white owned) New Orleans Convention Company Inc (NOCCI) to run the BC instead.

BTW, did I mention that BC tickets just went on sale last week?

Re: Grambling be replaced in Bayou Classic

So when would Southern play Grambling? And I have no interest in watching the Bayou Classic if it's not Southern vs Grambling...that's what makes the Bayou Classic, the Bayou Classic, IMO.

Also, who would Southern play...the only options are other SWAC programs and D2 teams

Only somebody from the MEAC could come up with something as idiotic as having a D2 school replace Grambling to help in attendance. Jesus Freaking Christ!

BTW who the hell is Robert Bruno?

Re: Grambling be replaced in Bayou Classic

This is ALL Tony Clayton. I wouldn't be surprised if Bruno's email account were filled with emails from T.C.

Re: Grambling be replaced in Bayou Classic

Honestly, I think taking Grambling out would kill the game. There is no logical replacement. A JSU vs SU Bayou classic would be a failure in my opinion. FAMU vs SU might work. That is the only possible replacement I see.

Nobody said anything because Tulane gave up a lot to help pave the way for the Superdome. Tulane has finally said something and are almost done building their own stadium that looks rather nice. That's why the Benson's donated millions to help fund the new Tulane stadium. By the way, the Superdome's days are on the clock.

Shidddd... FAMU didn't even come close to those numbers, when we played them in their own backyard for the National title.

Not sure if FAMU will play in it unless they decide to play the game on a different date. Can't see them giving up a chance to play in the playoffs since they are in the MEAC.

What about su vs tnsu? I agree with the famu vs su tho....that could really work out for them!

Re: Grambling be replaced in Bayou Classic

I agree...if they decided to replace Grambling, I'd love to see a home/home series established with Southern. Not sure if we could fit all of the fans in The Rob, but we could move it to Shreveport.

Re: Grambling be replaced in Bayou Classic

To me, there are too many hands in the pot that seem to plague Healthy Classics... In most cases, including this one, Third Parties are slowly killing the Classic.
Last year's Classic was a Snooze Fest.... But it was a great time to bring my kids because it wasn't too crowded.

Let's face it folks, Bayou Classic 2000s is NOTHING like Bayou Classic 1970s, 80s, 90s........... Folks must begin to be creative if this is to survive.

Now let's not get it twisted.... Folks are STILL in New Orleans, however, there is no longer an interest in the game itself.

Establish a home/home? You do know that we're in the same conference right?:emlaugh:

Nobody suggested anything

Learn to comprehend the post before you post something idiotic...NOBODY outside of the SWAC or D2 would participate. No MEAC school will and no other FCS schools will

Re: Grambling be replaced in Bayou Classic

What are talking about...stadium was PACKED

You guys are so accustom to those small time crowds in the MEAC, I guess anything over 15k is considered packed.

Overall results
Date SWAC Representative MEAC Representative Venue Attendance

December 29, 1995 Southern 30 Florida A&M 25 Georgia Dome (Atlanta) 25,164

Now how in the hell is 25k in the GaDome, a packed crowd?

This was my thought on the situation.

Shreveport...Cedric Glover would pick this up quick

Re: Grambling be replaced in Bayou Classic

This would be a bad move to take GSU out of this classic. Even though the attendance has gotten weak the BC still has potential to get back where it was. Then again depending on how you slice both schools probably would come out on top if they move the game to a home and home. I didn't do the math so don't hold that statement against me. Most classics don't serve a purpose for HBCU's anyways. As far as the ATL classic, its trash. 25k is weak for a classic game when you can bank that at home. SU and FAMU should always play a home and home.

Re: Grambling be replaced in Bayou Classic

This is the last year of the current contract. A change in participates is not always a good thing; ask the Atlanta Classic folks.

Re: Grambling be replaced in Bayou Classic

When I think of Bayou Classic, I think of Southern Louisiana. The word bayou refers to the small streams or rivers and marshlands typically found in Southern Louisiana. It is a reference to a place - New Orleans - rather than the teams participating in it.

Of course, Baton Rouge and Southern University are also located in bayou country adding legitimacy. Grambling, not so much.

It will very well still be the Bayou Classic without Grambling.

Sounds more like subjective thinking to me. You think like this as a Louisiana native, but the average person in California who'd even bother to tune in would think SU and Grambling.

Re: Grambling be replaced in Bayou Classic

It seems the best solution would be to move the Bayou Classic to another venue. This is all about money, and quite frankly, the Superdome could pursue another avenue that would generate much more income. The BC and BCF, in general, aren't the hot ticket items they used to be. Now is the time for SU/ Gram and the Superdome to part ways.

By "backyard" I would think you're talking about Tallahassee...FAMU isn't located in Atlanta...but you know that...at least I hope you know that
