College Rankings Are Out....

Panthro I agree 110%!!

For instance, I was doing a fellowship this summer and I met this black girl who went to MIT. Every other was MIT is known for....Mit is known for that, we have the best technological, medical, engineering, and ..... I asked her what her major was and homegirl said music!! I was like what the.......

EB...that is really, really true.

Aggie..

I listed them by tiers because that is the "so-called" grade that each university received. That is what's important. The category is a factor but is really not that significant. Look at it like this.... We know that all universities will not be able to offer the same amount of programs, so you have to kinda work with what you have. Now, if you are the best with the little you have..then you get an "A." If you are going through the motions just to get by, then you get a "F." US News and World Reports broke it up into categories and then tiers because they wanted to clarify to readers what each category meant first. They didn't necessarily mean that all universities in that category are "first" and above the others regardless of their tier or grade. So, the way that it is setup on that page can be and has been misleading as well. That's why you have to look at the Tier and only consider the class. There was an article in Mississippi's statewide paper that showed how writers tried to butter up how Mississippi's big three PWC's were ranked. It started off saying that they were dubbed as National Universities. By reading that, the average person will automatically say......WOW--NATIONAL UNIVERSITIES (without even knowing what it is)!! Then, in the next sentence...it showed for the first time in history that they were ranked TIER 3. Not that Tier 3 is really bad, but their university officials were pretty embarrassed and tried to act like their school missions are directed toward things other than what US News & World Reports evaluates. I guess they felt that they should have ranked better. Whereas, when Alcorn State and Jackson State were both Tier 3 Regional Universities togetherback in 1999....they never got recognized in the statewide paper as such. But if you look at if...all of those universities were pretty much just average universities quality wise. The only difference was that the big three PWCs offered more Ph.D./masters programs. That's it.

Hey I 'm not mad. I was just pointing out what I perceived as a discrepancy between what was reported and the reality. Thanks for the clarification. Anyway, the school doesn't make the persons future, the person makes their future in part based on the due diligence paid in the past whatever school they attended.

truthteller, thanks for the article, I read the method of ranking and I fully understand the research that was used to come up with tiers.

I would like to see everyone take more interest in what is going on at his or her university. Some years ago, while attending a meeting I learned that AAMU was a leading institution in getting research money. We are always around 20 to 26 Millions a year.
Also learned that FAMU numbers were signficantly high.

The article is not personal to me, but it should raise some questions from individuals associated with our colleges and univerisites.

Knowledge is powerful.

Again, thanks for posting, very informative.

BTW, I became more curious about who was spending the 26 millions. :D

Truthteller i understand you argument.....and I could go on about my perspective....

But I guess it is in how you interpret the data and each colleges mission. Like Howard University and CAU are research intensive universities that it would benefit to classified as National University.

I personally do believe in debating what they deem a worthy school especially when it comes to HBCUs because they could never understand they value of our schools

way to represent Alcorn with the Tier 2 ranking...we doing what we need to do...good job Bristow!!!

For the record nationally ranked schools are ranked higher than regionally ranked schools but the point about some schools being ranked lower for not offering as many phd's is true to an extent.Hampton would be nationally ranked if they had more phd's but Howard as stated in the article is still the highest ranked HBCU due to it's endowment, academic standards,SAT scores etc...I would like to take this time to tip my hat to the SWAC for representing this year with 3 nationally ranked schools.TxSu had been the only nationally ranked school from the SWAC until now. When I saw that the number of HBCU's double from last year it made me a very happy Bison.:) I also took the time to give my take on our uniqueness

I think that HBCU's are unique and offer alot to our young people so I took a look at some of them and what they have to offer.
1.ASU-A producer of quality students in computer science. Many of their alumni have secured jobs with some of the largest corporate entities in the midwest. They are also a top producer students who major in chemistry and physics.
2.JSU-Also a top producer of computer science majors as well as biology and chemistry. They are the largest HBCU in Mississippi which is also the top producer of black college graduates in the state.
3.PVSU- A solid engineering program that produces some of the best and promising minority engineers in the state of Texas.
4.Southern- A quality school which has produced it's fair share of engineers. They also are one of the few HBCU's to have a law school.
5.TexSou-A nationally ranked college which also boasts it's own law school and quality engineers.
6.AA&M-Probably has more engineering programs than any of their SWAC brethren as well as a renown agricultural program.
7.Xavier- The top producer of African Americans with degrees in science as well as pre med students. They also graduate more black students with degrees in pharmacy than any other school awarding 25% of all pharmacy degrees to african american students
8.Morehouse-The only all male HBCU which has produced some of the finest young men to ever earn a degree. They are also one of the few HBCU's to have a medical school and offer a phd in theology.
9.Spellman- The only all women HBCU that specializes in making leaders and achievers.
They are also a nationally ranked college.
10.Tuskegee-The leading supplier of black veternarians as well as one of the most comprehensive engineering and agricultural programs.
11.CAU-A top flight school with a solid business and MBA program which has made them a nationally ranked university.
12.VUU-A top producer of black theologians.Chances are ypur pastor may have gone here.
13.NCCU-One of the few HBCU's to have it's own law school.
14.VSU-Produces many of Virginia's school teachers and is growing every year.
15.WSSU-the first HBCU to offer classes online.
16.TSU-The top engineering program of all HBCU's as it is the highest ranked.
17.SCSU-Has produced the 2 highest ranking officers in the USMC with Major General's Clifford Stanley and Arthur Field.
18.A&T- The top producer as well the largest engineering schools of all HBCU's.They have a reputation of producing some of the best and brightest engineers in the nation.
19.Hampton-A top flight school that is known for it's academic merit. This school is full of bright young leaders that produces probably more black teachers and health profession graduates than any other school in the state. They are also the first HBCU to offer a Phd program in nursing.
20.FAMU-1997's Princeton's college of the year,#1 producer of black teachers,#1 in awarding bachelor's degrees to african americans,#1 in recruiting national merit scholars, and has a solid business school.
21.Meharry-The only HBCU dedicated solely to the health profession. It's medical school has recieved national acclaim for it's graduates.
22.Wilberforce-The oldest HBCU.This is where it all started in 1837.
23.MSU-has produced more black generals than any other HBCU and they also have a solid engineering program. There grads have been known to go to some of the best graduate schools in the world and succeed.
24.Howard-Last but not least HU the highest ranking of all HBCU'S is the only HBCU to have it's own Medical and Law school,is one of the 3 most highly recruited schools for minority engineers and recruiters of national merit scholars. The average SAT of a HU freshman is 1150.HU has more majors AND phd programs than any HBCU.Naming our alumni is like naming the who's who of achievers. We graduate more black doctors and lawyers than any other school.Academically we outrank Temple,Seton Hall,St John's,Hofstra,Louisville,Nebraska,Oregon, and many other larger PWC's that many may view as superior to HBCU's.Hu also is the first HBCU to offer graduate degrees online. There is much more but we all get the picture that HBCU's are the leaders in educating achievers.

For the record nationally ranked schools are ranked higher than regionally ranked schools
That is partially incorrect. If you're looking at quantity, then yes. If you're looking a quality, then it depends on your Tier.

TxSu had been the only nationally ranked school from the SWAC until now. When I saw that the number of HBCU's double from last year it made me a very happy
Now that is a good thing! I noticed that as well. Alabama A&M really showed out this year.

Howard as stated in the article is still the highest ranked HBCU due to it's endowment, academic standards,SAT scores etc.
We understand that. I explained that already under the article. You have both quality and quanity. Congrats!

To be honest the quality of the school has to do with the student since some schools provide better learning environments than others depending on the student.

The information is right I also read the same information. Why are questioning? I think he has more things to do than to sit up create false rankings. You see some talk the talk, but others walk the walk.

But where is the info at. Is it on the same sight as the rankings?

No...sonic98. I pulled it from Black Issues in Higher Education. It's a monthly journal that publishes "Top Degree Producers for Minorites" every year. You should be able to go to your university library or any library in the City of Jackson and pull up the infor. It's in the June 6, 2001 issue I think. If not, try pulling all the early June issues. You'll find it in there.
