Charlie Strong warns Texas fans they won't win a national championship this year

New Texas coach Charlie Strong told a crowd of Longhorns fans that their team will not play for a national championship this year.

Not exactly what any fan base wants to hear from their coach.

“We have everything available, and I don’t know why we can’t be successful,” Strong told fans in Fort Worth during the first stop on his bus tour, per to the Austin American-Statesman. “There’s no reason for us not to be. Now, I can’t tell you how soon it’s going to be. Don’t hold me to that. Don’t say, ‘Ooh, coach said next year we’ll be in the national…’ We will not be in the national championship game.”

Nah, he will be fine. He will ruffle some feathers. But the worse thing to say is you are going to win and win now. He will learn to be better at kissing the babies and doing coach speak. But he is straight up. UT fans know damn well they ain't going to win a title with David Ash or whomever at QB right now. What they do expect Charlie to do is at least get them back to a decent bowl (BCS type Bowl) right away and then maybe start thinking National Titles after getting back to 10 and 11 win seasons. Beat OU and everybody on their schedule from Texas. If he wins the Big 12 he will have done wonders quickly. There are some unrealistic UT fans and some will be put off by his gruffness. But I think once they see how tough the team becomes and have some swagger. They will start warming up to Strong. The problem with UT is they got too soft. Mack lost a lot of his hard core and good assistants and the players got coddled and had that entitled attitude. I think Strong is going to win and win big at UT. But starting to talk unrealistically will get him run quicker than before. His personality was probably suited for a different school. I always thought James Franklin from Vandy who took the Penn State job was a better coach from the personality standpoint and get folks to follow him to a river and jump in. LOL. Strong is not like that. So he will struggle with that piece. Once he wins then he will be okay. All he needs to do is win. Talking titles and being all happy go lucky to appease folks will not help him either. Just as long as he can keep the big money boosters not named Red McCombs happy behind closed doors he will be fine.

It may be true, but you still don't come out and say it lol.

I think he has too. It is more for ruffling the team up than the fans. When reading the article it seems more of a shot to the temperament of the team. They are so soft in Austin. Strong is going to fix that. I knew his hire and his demeanor would ruffle them folks because he is the direct opposite of the rah rah Mack Brown. Now if he don't win enough games soon enough. It will be a short tenure in Austin. LOL.

One of my scouting homeboys says that many around the Texas program are super happy about the change. He said their biggest problem was that Mack was cutting these deals with these high school coaches and signing players that had no business at UT in order to keep those pipeline relationships going. Basically said they would have good starters but no depth so 1 or 2 injuries would kill their seasons.

He would have got ran out of Tuscaloosa for making a comment like that..... You can't always "THINK OUT LOUD"

He wouldn't have had to say that there though. LOL. Saban didn't exactly kiss any arse when he arrived. He is pretty straight forward in his responses. Any coach that comes after Saban better say they will win titles or else. LOL. Trust me, Texas needed to hear that isht. The entitlement atmosphere around Austin had gotten out of hand and they had only one title to show for it. The next coach at Bama will be walking on egg shells on what to say or not say. LOL.

Interesting comments.........This Texas situation is going to get real interesting. I believe Strong is going to be successful though. The post Manziel era at TAMU will be interesting as well. TAMU from what I have seen is doing pretty well on the recruiting trail. TAMU is going to give Alabama and LSU some problems in New Orleans/Louisiana now and then if the last two recruiting crops are any indication.

LSU also needs to watch North Louisiana as well, because Bama came in and kicked a-- up there. lol

Yeah, that big lineman from West Monroe that Bama inked was a monster killer. I felt trimmers from the heartbreak in Tigerland way in North Georgia. :emlaugh: Speedy Noles (N.O.) was a killer too. Those two guys would have given LSU the #1 recruiting class.

I couldnt agree more with what you said...

Trust me in a few years Texas will be a powerhouse

You don't say it but you sure don't publicly pour cold water on expectations. Perfect example, Gus Malzahn came from Arkansas State ( hardly a Louisville) to take over a 2-9 Auburn team. Dude hit the ground running, worked hard bringing in needed talent i.e QB and others. All he said was they were going to work to get better...translation we're going to compete for SEC and nat'l titles now, and ended a couple plays from doing both in his first year.

Texas will end up being about like Ohio State. They'll be good in conference but avg outside of it. There's no guarantee they'll even end up being better than A&M now, especially since they joined the SEC. Even in their "good" years only time I can really remember dominance from them is Vince Young and Ricky Williams lol. Also I dont think the Oklahoma State's are going to be easy wins for them anymore either..even if they do get good.

Ain't he married to a white woman? I mean that alone tells you how he thinks. Them Clarence Thomas type brothers don't get who they really are.

LOL. A&M don't start playing defense and they will not win much this year. Texas issue has always been Mack Brown. He had good talented teams until recently that were just as good as any SEC team. If Saban would have been at Texas during the same time, he would have won more titles than he has at Alabama. It is much easier if you are the right coach to recruit Texas talent and then steal a few National recruits to come to Austin. Mack won 10 and 11 games regularly for awhile. He also won Bowl games. Just got complacent and he was never a hard nosed coach like Saban. Okie State ain't nobody for UT to be worried about with the right coach and neither is A&M. Kids in Texas still want to play in Austin over College Station. Unless Sumlin starts winning the SEC West and SEC Championship, then going to the National Title game playoffs, he better keep a watch out on what Strong will do in Austin. If he starts winning the Big 12 and having an easier path to the Championship playoffs then who you think those Texas kids will go to play for? You still will get drafted by the NFL at UT. The SEC will do nothing for A&M if they don't start beating LSU, Auburn and Alabama to take over the West. All Texas has to do is beat OU, Okie State and probably Baylor and they will be kings of the Big 12. As long as strong can win that conference and get to the National Title playoffs. The kids will come.

I know you don't like Ohio State so I will not even comment on that one. Urban will have to show you soon enough.

He needed to say it. There is a lot of the "We're Texas" entitlement in Austin. Sure, the Longhorns took out and whipped Oklahoma last season, but someone needs to toughen the Burnt Orange faithful up a little. The head coach needs to toughen up the team if it is going to be a national power.

Yep EB. We are thinking on the same line. Folks not familiar with UT don't realize that needed to be said. Whether it was the politically correct thing to say or not. But the fans as you said needed to be toughen up as well as the team. Now Strong has to follow up with wins no matter what he says. LOL. Still got to produce. I think he will. UT needed a culture change. Got to happy go lucky and soft after they beat USC.

Louisville will be a stronger program than Texas.

I wouldn't doubt it. Having all that "talent" in that state and Texas has never been a continuous impressive program. I honestly don't expect that to start now either. Like I said they'll probably be like Ohio State, the juggernaut of the conference and wimpy outside of it. They have a "top recruiting class" every year and never do chit with it lol. Will have a perfect season... then bowl season rolls around and they get exposed. He will have a maximum of 3 years to prove he can win anyway before they run him out of there.

Urban Meyer is just starting to get his players into the system. Ohio State's problem was defense, if he can fix that issue, they will definitely make some noise.
