Bulldogs getting tired of finishing second in SWAC

Since becoming a full-time member of the Southwestern Athletic Conference in 1999, Alabama A&M's football program has been a major player.

The Bulldogs have played in the SWAC Championship Game three times in the last six years, but have yet to claim the title.

A&M's three teams that have reached the championship game were led by tremendous defenses and less-than-stellar offenses. The 2000 team lost to Grambling State 14-6. That year, A&M managed just 146 yards in total offense and its lone touchdown came on a 95-yard fumble return.

In 2002, A&M fell 31-19 to the Tigers, who scored a late touchdown as time expired. Quarterbacks Tim Robinson and Johnny Keith combined to throw four interceptions.

Last year, after trailing Grambling State 12-6 at intermission, A&M self- destructed. The Tigers outscored the Bulldogs 33-0 in the second half.

"We just collapsed in the second half," defensive coordinator Brawnski Towns said Tuesday at the school's first fall sports media day.

That experience, Towns believes, has provided the fuel A&M's players need to make another run at that elusive title. The Bulldogs report today and will hit the practice field Thursday afternoon.

"More kids have watched film this summer than I can remember," Towns said. "They seem to be more determined. We don't have the best talent on defense, but we have an experienced offense.

"A lot of times, you don't win with the best team. The team that wins is the team that has the best chemistry and has a little luck."

That experienced offense is led by quarterback Kelcy Luke, who threw for more than 2,000 yards and 13 touchdowns last season. He also rushing for more than 500 yards and eight touchdowns.

A&M returns its top four rushers and seven of its top eight receivers. Four starters are back along the offensive line.

A&M was picked to win the league's East Division title last week at the annual SWAC media day. While that came as no surprise to coach Anthony Jones, he knows it won't be easy.

"On the East side, all five schools felt like they had a chance (to win the division)," said Jones, echoing what his fellow coaches said last week in Birmingham.

Southern and Grambling were the top two teams in the West Division.

"This is our best opportunity to win it since we've been in the SWAC, but you still have to play the games," Jones said. "The other nine teams in the conference aren't going to give us anything, so we better be aware of that."

Is he saying that we dont have a good defense, but we're expecting to win this year because of our offense?

Yeah, that's what he's saying Beans. We have never had to dig this deep on defense. Even when we lost 8 players, we ain't never had a problem on defense. Coach Townes is having fits trying to figure out what we gonna do..... :smh:

You believe me, don't you....:shame:

I do.

Also, how many INT's did Luke have last year vs. TDs. I recall it not being good but your beat writer left that part out. :headphone

Those stats are null and void....Experimental years. :nod2:

Experimental azz-whooping years for those hapless 'tiny tiggers' on lynch st. "L" last year alone 52 - 6 (and the clock kept running). :nod2: :nod2: :nod2: :nod2: :nod2: :nod2: :nod2: :nod2: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

Boy Kelcy Vick was all over JSU's team last year. Kelcy Vick only played for 2 1/2 quarters. :emlaugh:

Hey....................What we have been saying for years is true.

Beating JSU is like winning the Superbowl for some.

You right......................They would be braggin' about beating an all girl team as long as Jackson State was written across the jersey.:emlaugh:

Let's see............I never saw Bell dress-out for any of those games...........he never started or sub'ed in any of those games. Y'all had 85 scholarships and over 100 players on your roster. Y'all ALWAYS claim to have the best players in the SWAC including a superman. :emlaugh:

Don't waste your time, Straw.

Those geeks are trying to rationalize the arse-beatins' they got over the past three years....all while continuing to proclaim, "we are Jackson State." Somehow, they always failed to add to that..."and we just got the hell beat outta us."

For someone who sells as many "wolf" tickets as does the Mafia, they can never simply say they got their arses drug....and with (according to some,) "the best head coach in the SWAC."

They should be covered in shame for this feeble attempt.

:smh:

Can one of you all answer my question? I mean, Misinformed Mike gave me an answer, but his answer must be confirmed by another before taken as truth.

We ARE Jackson State and although we got our azzez whooped, we know it was not because of who we were. You can't have the most talented in 1-AA when Hughes felt like he did not need to recruit since we were JSU....yes, the players we beat you with just showed up at JSU's door begging to play ...and then Bell's recruiting and retention efforts were snagged by his lack of popularity. Oh well, Hughes is gone, we have a coach who beats the bushes and we have a coach that our fans/city/supporters accept.

And we also said those players were no longer comming to JSU while Bell was there.

Bell left, Comegy came in, Transfers out the arse.

You never seen Bell dress out for a game.
I have never seen a coach HAVE TO ACTUALLY COACH AGAINST BELL.

Who don't know how to stop run left, run right, run pitch back toss trap up the middle on 3rd and 40 then punt.

Again....................your so-called accomplishment is "dumbed down"..........an illusion.:emlaugh:

JSU beat us when Hughes was there..... unlike JSU folks we dont offer excuses... we got beat...

as far as arse beatings? You won one game in OT... and you won another game by 6 points... if you call that an "arse beating"... you must call 52-6 the ELECTRIC CHAIR.

Ain't nobody making excuses....................We just stating fact's.

Bell came....................JSU went to depth's that the State of Mississipp has never witnessed in our history.

Heck, the last time we played SU in the Superdome, they could have scored on us everytime they got the ball.
It got so bad, by mid-second qtr, the SU fan's that was talking shat started asking WHAT THE HE!! IS WRONG WITH JSU.:nod2:

Even they saw that mess was not us......................which is RARE for SUck's fans.:emlaugh:

Again.....................accomplishment...................ILLUSION.:lmao:

I mean who are y'all trying to convince, yourselves or us? We ain't falling for all this spinning. This is a damn shame. Well GR and Robber have enough good sense to know to stay away. To steal his line, "Y'all got more excuses than a brother in jail". :smh:
