Bulldogs going full gear starting today
Alabama A&M will practice in full pads for the first time this afternoon.
After four days in shorts, the Bulldogs will finally get an opportunity to hit each other today.
"We've gotten all we can get out of being in shorts," A&M coach Anthony Jones said. "After a day or two in pads, I think you'll see some immediate separation."
Everybody looks good in shorts, Jones said. Starting today, he and his staff will begin finding the players that can help the Bulldogs win.
"The fans don't come to watch us play in shorts," he said. "They want to see real football and real football is in pads.
"There's something about putting on pads that changes a lot of attitudes."
Luke not resting on laurels: Quarterback Kelcy Luke has had to battle for the job each of the last two seasons. Two years ago, Luke beat out Johnny Keith for the starting job after he transferred from Auburn.
Last season, Luke beat out highly touted redshirt freshman Harold Dorman.
Keith, who was redshirted last season, opted not to return for his senior year. Dorman transferred to Bowie State.
There is nobody for Luke to beat out this season. Still, that won't stop him from trying to become a better player.
"It's a different feeling, but I'm going to continue to work hard," said Luke, who threw for more than 2,000 yards last season and also rushed for more than 500 yards.
"I'm trying to get better every time I step on the field."
Luke was A&M's third-leading rusher last season behind tailbacks Nic Luke and Ta'mar Scott. This season, however, Luke may not be able to run as much with three inexperienced quarterbacks behind him. After Luke, A&M would be forced to use redshirt sophomore Stanley Allen or true freshmen Kevin Atkins and Jared Loftin.
