They just announced the nominations. Congrats to

Jennifer Hudson- Best Supporting Actress
Eddie Murphy- Best Supporting Actor
Djimon Hounsou- Best Supporting Actor
Forrest Whitaker- Best Actor
Will Smith- Best Actor

I don't remember that many ever being nominated at one time.

DreamGirls got 8 nominations but not one for Best Picture.

Louis Gosset, Jr is on Tom Joyner's Show right now, and he just said that if Forrest Whitaker, or Will Smith doesn't win for best actor, he'll never go to the Academy Awards again. He think Forrest Whitaker is a lock though.

Congrats are definitely in order for the brothers, and sisters who did thier thing last year in the movies.

NICE

I can't wait to see the full list. Congrats to Dreamgirls.
I wonder if the other nominations are for orginial score (music), director, lighting/costume design and/or photography, because all those things were really great in the movie.

Does Will Smith get nominated for an award just because? I wasn't impressed with the job he did with playing this role. There was nothing he did that someone else wouldn't have done playing the same character.

I agree... the story idea was better than the movie turned out to be.

It might've been the story moreso than his acting.... just like when he did the movie Ali and also got an Oscar nomination.

And if I'm not mistaken, Will bought the rights to that movie. So of course, he wanted to play that part.

He was MUCH better in Ali.

Eddie and Djimon both had great performances. I saw Blood Diamond over the weekend. I don't know about Will Smith giving an Oscar winning performance. Like the others said, he's had better performances. The Pursuit of Happyness just wasn't as good as I expected it to be. I haven't seen the Forrest Whitaker movie yet.

Djimon was very good in Blood Diamond.
I need to see the Forest Whitaker movie.

I thought Jennifer Hudson would fall under the category for Best Actress and not Supporting Actress.

Maybe it's just me, but Will Smith gets a free pass from me because he help brought along so many people in the game. Plus he never forgets where he came from and will represent West Philly to the hardest. He is just reaping what he has sowed. So I hope he wins just because.

Really? I thought Will did an EXCELLENT job in Pursuit of Happyness, I even got a little misty eyed in the movie :shame: but dont tell nobody!!

It was a decent movie, I was just expecting more I guess. From what everyone has said, it sounds like I just need to read the book. I've found that a lot of men got emotional over the movies. A couple of my friends said they had that "misty eye" problem watching it. I cry on all kinds of movies and I didn't shed a tear.

No one person in that movie was a lead if you ask me. Beyonce and Jamie Foxx were the lead names for the movie and I think Jamie was probably in more scenes than anyone. But none was a lead. They all supported the movie. Good thing she is in the supporting actress category because it is no way they would vote for her in the best actress one with Penelope Cruz, Judi Dench, Meryl Streep, Helen Mirren and Kate Winslet all in that category. Plus after seeing Queen........Helen Mirren is a lock. Meryl Streep did a good job in her film too.

I expect Eddie, Jennifer and Forrest to win their categories.

Looks like a banner year for a lot of those independent films over the mainstream stuff.

Hey, I didn't cry! Something was just in my eye at the time and it started to water a little, thats all. Anyway... What more did you want? Explosions?:swink:

I agree with you CD. It isn't anything wrong with Will getting nominated because he is Will Smith. Alot of those actors and actresses get nominated just because as well, even when their movie or performance just seemed okay. We should be glad we got one of our own that carry that kind of Oscar clout in Hollywood. Not that we have many who do. Just Denzel and now Will.

Will Smith is a very good actor...you can't take anything away from him. He's due his Oscar too. Hell, he played Ali so well, I thought he was Ali...I still haven't seen Pursuit of Happyness, so I can't comment on his acting ablility in that movie...but, I've seen him in everything else he's done, and he's an outstanding actor. He'd get my vote, but I'm sure Forrest will win. It's time for him too.

Either way, I'm happy w/the nominations...

JR, I saw a tribute to Will this weekend on Bravo and it made me proud to be a black man. Everyone who got up their talked about how Will gave them a break when no one in Hollywood would do that. He is responsible for a lot of blacks making it in this industry at a young age. Imagine what is to come? They also talked about how he never lets you forget that he was born and raised in West Philly. He says that keeps him grounded and that is a true essence of success. He doesn't have to bring anyone along, but he goes out of his way to do it. Will proves that just because you from the ghetto you ain?t got to be ghetto and you can stay true to the ghetto by helping others come from where you came from. It?s not often that you hear this about young people in our society.

True. I remember an interview about a year ago or so with him and Jazzy Jeff and he was talking about how he had to make Jeff do the role in the Fresh Prince. He just wanted Jeff to be able to enjoy his success on the show as well. Jeff was like he really didn't want to act. But he was so nervous that his character just became funny as it went on. Will is good people. You got to respect that. Denzel seems to be same way. He gave Derek Luke and I can't think of the sister that played in Antoine Fisher with him a chance and now they are getting some roles in Hollywood.

I can believe that. Look at Fresh Prince and ALL the different stars who made guest appearances on that show! And many of them were still fresh faces:
Nia Long, Tyra Banks, Queen Latifah, Don Cheadle, Vanessa Williams, etc. And he had tons of veteran actors on there: Kim Fields, Tisha Campbell, Malcolm Jamal-Warner, etc.
And then look at ALL of Us on UPN (a show where he's co-creator/executive producer), he brings back people he's worked with in the past: Tisha Campbell and gets Alphoso Riberio (Carlton) to direct.
