Bayou Classic Move

I don't know if yall have heard this announcment or not but I am just informing fellow SP'ers of the announcement.
I was watching the 9'oclock news a little while ago & they announced that there has been a proposal made to SU & Grambling University to move the Bayou Classic to Houston. The fans have been complaining about high hotel prices & rude service from the business in New Orleans. There were some other issues addressed I just can't remember them at this time, but they would like to move the Classic to Houston,Tx :). Personally I don't see a problem with it ( less travel time to the events for me) & I am sure other Houstonians will agree with me. The media said that an settlement should be made within the week. That's all the info I have on this but I just wanted to post & let yall know & also see how you all feel about the move from New Orleans to Houston,TX.

This is not the first time that I have heard that Grambling and Southern wanted to move the classic to Houston. It seems this discussion pops up about every three years or so.

Personally, I don't think it will happen.

Fan support will decline drastically due to the fact that Houston shuts down its night life at 2 am.

We've been discussing this in the Nation forum. Unless N.O. steps to the plate, it may happen this time. I would welcome a two year contract with Houston to make the N.O. folks get their act together.

Here's an excerpt from the article found on southerndigest.com

In the Houston proposal there was a guarantee that no room would exceed $150 per weekend. Also offered at a cost of $35,000 is the use of Reliant Stadium, which will be the home to the NFL?s newest team, the Houston Texans.

The city of New Orleans has until November 30 to respond with a package of its own, and a decision on the future whereabouts of the Bayou Classic is expected to be announced by the end of the year.

My first choice would be for New Orleans to step to the plate and do right by both universities. If the City of New Orleans, The Tourist Bureau and the Hotel/Restaurant Association would sponsor scholarships, and donate to both schools business departments, make donation to both schools general fund (at least match the game day proceeds), all parties would leave happy.

It was mentioned on todays Jaguar Journal (by Carlos Brown) that the BC has a $50 million economic impact upon the City of New Orleans. Surely, they could afford to guarantee that the Universities receive at least matching game receipt proceeds.

Don't get me started!

This topic seems to re-surface every other year, and my opinion has remained unchanged. How could it be considered The Bayou Classic if it's not in the Bayou State. I am not hatin on Houston by no means; I just think it should remain in Louisiana. Nevertheless, we can no longer continue to put up with those high prices every year. Maybe a short term move is needed.

I wouldn't be a least bit surprised if the game moves to Houston. The SWAC headquarters left New Orleans for B'ham because of a lack of concern and committment. What will N.O. loose next?

The other cities that have offered include Orlando, Shreveport, and Baton Rouge. Shreveport and Baton Rouge got into the hunt when the Bayou Classic committee proposed to go back to a home and home situation. The games would be played in Independance Stadium (50,000) and LSU's Tiger Stadium (91,610) in Baton Rouge. Of course this would be temporary until a final solution would be arranged. Both of these games are outdoors so the weather of course would be rough to deal with. I just hope City of New Orleans and the hotel associations come to the plate and offer the same rates that are offered to the Superbowl, Suger Bowl, and other sporting events.

My humble opinion....

Personally i think that if N.O. doesn't step up to the plate they should move the classic to houston orlando is definately out too much travel.
Now as for Miami Jag question about how can they call it the Bayou Classic by it being played in houston.
This game started because of the heated rivalery between the two school long before it moved to N.O. and because of the popularity of the game between the schools representatives of both schools approach the city of N.O. and they agreed to give it a try(in all honesty they didn't think it would work..N.O. that is)
So you see the Bayou Classic isn't N.O. it's Grambling and Southern N.O. is just a venue.
Lacumba my brother as for attendance the houston area is one of the largest alumni base for both schools in the country, think about it a little clearer bro. if we put 40,000 plus for the TSU game(no smack on the tigers intended)now why would think it wouldn't be a sellout for our beloved two schools?

Just my humble opinion spice with a little fact. ;)

Why put up with being treated bad?

The Rattlers and Wildcats got tired of the same old thing in TAMPA and decided to move to Orlando. Yesterday's Florida classic generated over $30 million plus for the Orlando area. Everybody has gotten on the band wagon including Walt Disney. Everybody wins!

Southern and Grambling are selling an excellent product. The fans will come to the Bayou Classic wherever it is. Don't look now but the BC has become embedded in the American tradition. Thanskkgiving weekend and the BC on TV!

Go somewhere, where somebody wants you!

I don't like the high prices that hotel's charge for the BC (that's why I don't spend my money with them) but moving one of the biggest events in the state to Houston or Orlando makes little sense to the true fans of SU and Gram. Give me another game between instate rivals that would move their games OUT OF STATE? Could you see USC vs. UCLA being played in Vegas? What about FAMU vs. BC being played in Atlanta? Why take such a big payday to your neighbor?

The game HAS to stay in Louisiana. I say move the game for two years. Play it one year in Shreveport and another year in Baton Rouge. This way, we keep the game in Louisiana and it will put the pressure on NO to gets it act together. I'm sure with a $50 million pay, they'll be back at the table real soon.

cat daddy the problem with your idea is one shreveport has no stadium to hold our crowds and our mayor in baton rouge didn't put in a bid for it, you don't have to bust me in the head with a pipe to know if i'm not ask in i'm not wanted.
We don't owe the state sh@@!!! we do owe our schools the best opportunity possible

Well in actuality the Independance Bowl holds upwards of 50,000 with the renovations going on. Both cities are discussing these deals with the Bayou Classic committee (both schools are on this group) to see if anything can be arranged.

Great! The Bayou Classic needs to stay in state. If it's S'port and Baton Rouge then that's cool too. Can you imagine the Economic impact upon these two cities! I think it would be greatly appreciated.

Everyone likes the comfort of the dome, true but outside football in late November doesn't always have bad weather. Dress warm and enjoy the game. I think in both cities you would get fans that normally didn't attend the game. I think it could work!

I agree...

with cat daddy. Why not Shreveport and Baton Rouge for a couple of years. But to move the classic out of Louisiana all together is ridiculous. The African American leaders of New Orleans must get together and find a solution and proposal to keep this outstanding event in the city of New Orleans. If they want us there they must ante up. Those hotel rooms are outrageous. When this topic came up a couple of years ago their reason was the Bayou Classis is a "special event" and all special events are treated accordingly when money is concerned.
What they are really trying to say is the white folk pay for the Sugar Bowl, Final Four, etc...why can't we pay for the classic.

I can't see it here.

True, each school has a large alumni base here (in Houston) but it won't happen.

But.... if by some freak of nature that Houston is awarded the classic it will find a way not to capitalize on it. City officials and Corporate Houston doesn't understand the impact that this game has. I've said it once and I'll say it again.... Houston is not a true sports fanatic town.

DUH!!!!

The classic has been in the superdome since 1976 if you don't get it in 24 years you don't want to get it.
As for 50,000 in S-PORT can you mutiply $22.00 by 12,000 your coming up short.
Everybody talks about economic freedom and don't know what the hell to do with it .
I'm pretty sure UCLA AND USC aren't being SH@TTED on like we are,
one more time so you can do the math at least 24 freaking years if the city of N.O. or the state had any appreciation for our school they would have at least guranteed $2,000,000.00 to both athletic program and we wouldn't be talking facility issues.
They don't because they don't want to help you get on the level LSU is.
Wake up guys and stop being afraid to succeed, again we don't owe the state SH@@!!! if you want to get it without vaseline fine but leave me out.
Just so you'll know the hotels get minimum $50,000,000.00 that weekend alone not to mention the events during the week.

So Blue are you suggesting that Houston will guarantee us the 2,000,000.00 the state of LA should be giving the schools???I don't think so.

Alternate Between BR and Shrevport if necessary, But Keep the BC in State

........ And don't forget the political reality of the situation.

SU and GSU are two state schools that still depend on substantial state funding for their budgets. Moving a game between two state funded schools that generates substantial revenue for the state would be political suicide. If we think SU and GSU's fundings requests for capital expansions and the like are treated badly now, move the classic out of the state and see how quickly the little support we now have in the state legislature drys up.

Regards.

I don't think the BC will be moved from New Orleans. If it's the last thing Marc Morial does as mayor, he will find a way to keep the BC in New Orleans.

We have to play our part in the process too. Stop paying hundreds of $$$ to stay in New Orleans.

As far as Baton Rouge goes, LSU stadium and surrounding tailgating area/facilities would be nice to use, but I don't see it happening. The hotels in BR, restaurants, etc. are not centrally located around LSU like everything is around the Superdome. This would force people to have to drive from place to place and BR roads and interstates going through just can not accomodate us. BR definitely doesn't have the nightlife/entertainment to accomodate 90,000 blacks from all over the country, unless we want to hang out at one of the Super Wal-Marts.

I need not even talk about Port City.

I like Houston, Atlanta, Orlando and all those other out of state places named but you can't get the cultural experience of both schools in those places. You may can find imitation Gumbo and second lining but nothing like the real thing you find in New Orleans.

Something smells funny about Grambling / Southern/ SWAC supporters generating $50 million a year and not being treated right! And New Orleans needs the money!

How does the UCLA/USC situation compare to the Bayou Classic? The UCLA/USC game is a home and home series. UCLA plays its home games in the Rose Bowl, USC plays its games in the L.A. Coliseum. Both venus seat damn near 100K.

Something just needs to be done with the NO convention and visitors bureau. They ought to more than willing to meet our needs/demands. Moving the classic to anywhere else will not work. It just wouldn't be the classic. I've been to the Florida Classic and although I had a very nice time, it was not the Bayou Classic nor New Orleans. As far as Atlanta, they have their share of classics and don't think for a minute they would not up their hotel fares if they hosted something as significant as the Classic.

They should not move it. True it can be expensive in N.O., but have people stopped going? There will always be an economic issue but to move the Bayou Classic out of the Bayou...a tradition like that cannot be broken, a way will be found to keep the game there.
