Bonds ends slump with two blasts
CHICAGO ? One home run wasn't enough for Barry Bonds in his return to the San Francisco Giants' lineup.
Bonds hit home run Nos. 752 and 753 of his career off the Chicago Cubs on Thursday afternoon to move within two of tying Hank Aaron's all-time record.
His latest, in the top of the seventh inning, was a three-run shot to center field off Will Ohman that landed in the basket between the ivy outfield wall and the fans in the bleachers. Bonds worked Ohman to a full count before sending a shot that cut through a strong wind blowing toward home plate.
One that made his first home run of the day all that much more impressive. In the second inning, Bonds deposited a first-pitch fastball from starter Ted Lilly onto Sheffield Avenue, the first home run to completely exit Wrigley Field over the right-field wall this season.
The home runs, Bonds' 18th and 19th of the season, and his first since July 3, snapped an 0-for-21 slump. Through the seventh, he was 3 for 3 with a walk. He followed his first home run with a third-inning two-run single to left field, taking advantage of the Cubs' extreme shift toward right field by dinking a ball into short left-center.
Bonds' second multi-homer game of this season, and the 71st of his career, marked a triumphant statement after he had looked so feeble in recent days.
