Garrett offerred Ravens top spot

Dallas Cowboys offensive coordinator Jason Garrett has been offered the Baltimore Ravens coaching position, sources told ESPN.

Garrett has not made a decision yet. But according to a league source, there is a "60-40'' chance that Garrett will ultimately accept the chance to succeed Brian Billick, who was fired after the regular season.

Garrett, who arrived at the Ravens' training complex for the second interview on Tuesday morning, was the first candidate to have call-back sessions with the Ravens and Atlanta Falcons.

According to a Cowboys source, Dallas owner Jerry Jones has communicated to Garrett without knowing exactly what the Ravens' financial offer might be that he would match it if Garrett rejects the Ravens' offer.
 



I am glad this is happening, b/c I am sick and tired of re-cycling coaches that are losers and has not won on there previous teams. Do you think the interviewing of a black coach is really working in the NFL? I say it sucks b/c half of the time teams are only doing it just to satisfy the rule set by the NFL. For years now Caldwell and Meeks of the Colts has interviewed well and no head coaching job for them, its sad but its the good ole boy network.
 
I disagree. Think back to the days of when Art Shell was the only black head coach and compare it to now. There has not only been a few head black coaches, but there are SEVERAL top black assistant coaches. So, I do not know if these coaches would not have been head coaches if it were not for the mandate.

I hope Jason Garrett sits tight and takes the Cowboy head coaching job. I'm sure Jerry will give it to him after next season.

If Garrett is smart he takes the Baltimore job. Show everybody he can coach outside of the Jerry Jones/Cowboys hoopla. What if Wade Phillips wins the SB next season? Does Jerry dump him for Garrett? Jason can't pass up head coaching opportunities unless Jerry puts it in writing. Ozzie Newsome is a good GM and I think Garrett would be in a better situation with less pressure.

One thing about Jerry is he takes care of his own. Garrett was the smartest player to ever play for JJ. Remember, JJ gave Garrett the offensive coordinator position even though he had no experience at being an OC and even though he hadn't hired a head coach. Jerry's plans are to give Jason the head coaching position after next year because he wants him to be the head coach when they move into the new stadium. Wade was NEVER a long term plan for Jerry Jones and even if Wade wins the SB next year, he is STILL out the door. Ask Jimmy Johnson if Jerry Jones won't get rid of you after a Super Bowl win?

I think Garrett will remain for the opportunity to be the head coach at Dallas.

Well I wish him luck, because as soon as Jason does not do well in Dallas under the scrutiny, then he will probably not get any other opportunities. I just don't believe in waiting for a job when one is there for the taking. Especially to work with a good drafting GM like Ozzie. I still think Jerry and his staff draft badly unless there is a Jimmy or Parcells type coach around. Now Atlanta I can see him turning that job down. Not this Baltimore job. More shelf life there.

On him being smart I get that but I will reserve judgement to see how good of a head coach he is. I personally like the young OC at New England. He would be on my list as a head coach candidate.

Well, that is the thing. He has one year of being an OC, so he just might not think he is ready to be a head NFL coach. Romo did revert back to his backyard style of play late in the season and he didn't rely on his fundamentals. JG might want to stay and complete PROJECT ROMO as a goal and then seriously think about being a head coach.

I hope he stays with Dallas.
 
He'll be worse than Brian Billick. He's overrated and not all that great of an OC. If he's smart he'll stay in Dallas after Jerry matches the offer and wait for the Dallas HC job so he can be over paid and run Dallas further into the ground.

Heck no, it's almost impossible to be worse than Brian Billick. I could coach better than Brian Billick and I have no coaching experience.

His experience as an OC is waaaaaaay more impressive than Garrett and he won a Super Bowl. Garrett ain't even the 3rd best OC in the NFL IMO and he'll never win a Super Bowl as a HC.

Man Brain Billick rode Ray Lewis and Marvin Lewis coat tail to that Super Bowl. He didn't do anything to win it. That team had the worst offense of any team to ever win a Super Bowl. Name me one Super Bowl winner that had a worse offense? Look at his offense since he's been at Baltimore. With that defense, Baltimore should have won about 3-4 Super Bowls. Jason Garrett is a major upgrade.

That just goes to show that hiring an OC as a Head Coach doesn't mean that your offense will be high powered. Garrett hasn't done anything to make me believe that he's an upgrade. Just like Billick he's the OC of a team with a highly talented offense and they're still not all that impressive. At least Billick had broken some records on the offensive end as an OC. Why hasn't Mike Singletary gotten a look by Baltimore?? He actually coached there.

You are right, but an offense is nothing without a solid QB. That was the downfall of Billick's tenure in Baltimore. He never could find the QB. You can talk about line play and running backs, but if a coach can't find a solid QB that he can plug in his system for 5-10 years, then that franchised will be as inconsistent as Britney Spears raising kids.
 
That's Bilick's fault. Nobody put a gun to his head and made him pick Boller. It would be better for Garrett to stay in Dallas and be groomed as the next Cowboy coach.

ATLANTA (AP) - One day after introducing their new general manager, the Atlanta Falcons got back to work trying to find a head coach Wednesday, meeting with Dallas Cowboys offensive coordinator Jason Garrett for the second time.

Thomas Dimitroff, who was hired as GM last weekend, indicated the Falcons may have their man by the end of this week.

If that's the case, Garrett and former Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan would appear to be at the head of the list. They are the only two candidates to get a second interview with Atlanta so far.

One day after spending more than six hours meeting with the Ravens about their coaching vacancy, Garrett was in Atlanta for the first time to talk again with the Falcons, said a person familiar with the search, speaking on condition of anonymity because no decision had been made.

You are right. no one made Billick put a gun to his head and force him to draft Kyle Boller, but at the time he thought Boller was his guy. Now you know that drafting that position is an inexact science.

That's why the QB position is the most important on the field--in sports for that matter.

Look at the Falcons. Granted, Mike Vick was no Tom Brady or Peyton Manning, but he sure was 10x better than the garbage the Falcons put on the field this season. With Vick not in the lineup, the whole franchise went down the tube.

Plus, I think Jason Garrett was one of the right place at the right time guys. He flourished in a system that had a solid QB, running game and good WRs. All he had to do was call plays. Will Garrett be as good as head coach at a struggling franchise like Atlanta or Baltimore where the talent is lacking in areas?

The NFL is such one big American Idol fest that it is sad in some ways.

Every year there is a "hot" coordinator out there that NFL GMs and owners drool over because they were part of winning organizations. Most of those guys don't even workout. I wish more teams would be like Pittsburgh and hired guys like Mike Tomlin who was not the "hot coach," but had a solid pedigree.

This copycat mentality is the sole reason why the NFL is a little watered down.
 
I feel you to a certain extent, because everybody was singing Cam Cameron's praises last year and you see what he did in Miami without LT and Gates. Some of these cats need to take a look at the rosters before they jump ship. I know i'd rather get paid and be a coordinator on a contender rather than be on a team full of bullisht.
