Appears the SWAC isn't the only FCS conference that wants to move up as a whole

I am not saying it can't be done, but we know the rules to get it done and thus you would think that there would signs of progress to that fact. 1. NCAA is not approving any conference to move up together, as they took care of that loop hole years ago. Unless the SWAC is planning one of the lawsuits against the NCAA that was file on the behalf of HBCUs, then it is a mute point talking about moving up as whole conference. 2, Not all the schools are equal in the SWAC when it comes to finances, so even with a influx of clash through any type of deals, you will still have teams unable to make the jump to d1. 3. If the SWAC schools really plan to jump as a group of schools that could make it, then they will need to find a conference home that will take that many number of schools and then you have to consider what will happen to the schools like Valley that will have to stay behind or go back to D2. 4. The only conference that will really make sense would be conference USA, which would plug geographic issues with their current school line, but the flip side of that schools will have to deal with an increase in travel cost given the wide foot print of conference usa

I am not down on SWAC or even MEAC schools moving up, but people need to be realistic how it can be done. Expecting for ESPN deal to generate a massive income is as logically as me planning my life around winning the lottery. ESPN parent company is in trouble and they are laying off people, so I would not expect a massive increase in media rights for ESPN to the SWAC. What I would like to see if the SWAC or MEAC schools are planning to move up then, they need to start setting the ground work to do so, but at least supporting all scholarships on FCS level. If you can't even do that, then how are the schools expecting to all of sudden support the same scholarships at a D1 one level.

Our people have succeed regardless of all the hardships that we have been put through in this country, so I believe we can do things if we set our minds to it by having a logical and realistic long term plan to reach the goal. What I don't want to see is us setting goals or doing things and hoping that everything will turn out alright, as that mind set it what help lead to St. Paul closing (they brought back football when they was having hard financial times and end up loosing money every football season).
I would love to see an HBCU FBS conference of 8 schools. But there is no way we can move up as a conference with teams like BCU, AAMU and Valley, and PV and TxSo....

AAMU could successfully make the jump to FBS. If I’m not mistaken, AAMU has the largest HBCU enrollment in the state of Alabama, and AAMU’s endowment is in the top ten of hbcus. Also, AAMU has nice facilites, and it would only take minor renovations, if needed.

And for the third time, with what money? We cannot even beat the JMU's

And we barley give because we are too busy spending it on everything else. But when our HBCU's ask for it, we cry and complain.
colorado couldn't beat jmu either. they were 1-11. if we move together that takes care of a lot of ability to compete. we will build to take on the rest of g5 and some p5 programs.
if troy, south alabama, jacksonville state et al can move up to fbs then we can too. we just have to make up our mind that we are going to do it and get our ducks in order.
that next media rights deal should bring significant dollars to all of our schools. I'd expect well over a million per school compared to less than 100k per school in the last deal.

the ncaa also wasn't allowing schools to move up without a invitation from a conference, but then liberty...

Schools have been using the wac as a zombie conference to move up. we could do the same if the ncaa won't exempt us to move together. it's worth investigating if the southwest conference charter is still viable as well, or any dead, semi-dead fbs conference.

ESPN is not the only broadcast partner to consider. Apple TV, Amazon, and Youtube TV have to all be considered as possibilities for us as well. We will get a huge jump in our deal and it still may not be enough. for context lets do a run some numbers. If alcorn created it's own platform to broadcast all home contest for all sports and charged $10/month and got 10,000 subscribers that would generate 1.2 million and then you can create additional revenue by tapping into ads. there is no reason to take less than 1.5 million per school per year from any broadcast partner. they are about to pay us or we can build our own. that has to be the mindset.

who isn't funding scholarships? the only one I'm aware of is valley who is at 90% on football scholarships now. who are the others?

NO.

It’s true A&M has the largest enrollment of the HBCUs in Alabama. That’s why it puzzles me why the university does not fully fund all its sport programs?

I truly don’t understand JSU’s hate towards AAMU.
They never got over that running clock game. That might not have been the worst beating they ever got, but it has a permanent linger in their psyche. That we smacked them so hard on it might have something to do with it also.

Is the clock still running because we been running through y'all like a Swiss army knife 😆 🤣 😂

The scooter game was payback AT YOUR HOMECOMING. Move on. Also, yall beat James Bell. We beat Maynor.

Just face the fact that yall not an attractive opponent. No team even bothers to travel to yall besides JSU. TNState is right down the street and they also have no interest.

I remember you and GR fighting it out on the forum about Bell. Seems to me like I remember you thought Bell was good, wanted to keep him and give him more time. Now you are throwing him under the bus. But for the record, when we beat Bell we also beat JSU.

What you remember is me wanting to move away from Robert Hughes. BUT I didnt realize how he wasnt fully supported. In James Bell's first year, I did support him. I even supported him in year 2. But by year 3, I was out. Just understand that you are 8-1 vs Bell, Old Man Jackson, Hendrick and Tin Man Hughes. You are 3-12 vs Judge Hughes, Comegy and Prime. As I always say, we gotta be down bad to lose to yall. Comegy was 5-5 and 4-7 when yall beat him and Coach Prime was in the covid season that the NCAA doesnt even count.. LOL

Its not hate. Its just honesty. AAMU, Valley, UAPB, etc... dont have a strong enough fan base. I know yall go to the MCC tho. You can still play that game.
Neither does Grambling if we're being real. Matter fact, basically JSU, SU and FAMU would probably be the only ones that could. But that's considering if the NCAA actually cares about that for a move up...which they don't. Have you seen SHSU's facilities??? Their attendance isn't all that notable either.

Excellent post, but there are somethings that you are not accounting for.

Liberty moved up as independent not with other schools as a conference and they had the deep pockets to pay schools to play them. Due to Liberty racist history no conference wanted to do anything with them until recently. At one point that even tried offering a boat load of cash to a conference to take them and the conference refuse.

I actually agree with you on this point, but if I am not mistaken the NCAA but an end this loophole years ago and only said the WAC would be the other grandfather conference that could move up. Since the WAC and another conference is trying to form a football only conference, then the option maybe to purchase the WAC conference and then that is your conference bath to move up. The problem with that is the NCAA still have not approved that football only conference and then the NCAA would have to approve a new conference for the other sports of the merge conference.

There other option available, but some of the option come with extra cost because from my understanding neither Apple, Amazon, or Youtube have production houses for live sports and thus any type of deal with those companies would require the schools to produce their own sport broadcasts to send to said companies.

I am talking about funding scholarship for all sports, not just football. If you are going to move up schools would have to fund every sports at the FBS level. From an article that HBCU Game-day wrote, it appears not a single HBCU D1 schools is funding all of their sports at the FCS level.

Also, any new deal the SWAC does 40 percent goes to the SWAC Office off the top before anything goes to the schools. Also, the SWAC has lawsuits hanging over their heads, specific the one from the parent company of HBCU League Plus. That one lawsuit alone could bankrupt the SWAC, if they get what they are asking for.

In the end if the SWAC schools are looking to move up, as a conferance in somone fashion, , it might be wise to cut the financially challenge schools in order to increase income to the other schools in order to build up the necessary funds for a push to FBS.

You do know that HBCUs give just as much as PWI counterparts, right?
The gap is created with corporate sponsorships and TV money. We dont control those purse strings.
I used JMU as an example because they had a 10 year plan to prepare themselves to move up, as nothing is stopping any HBCU D1 school from doing the same. While the student athlete fees play are part in funding JMU athletics that is not their only source of income. The biggest pot of money is coming from the work of the JMU athletic foundation and even if you factor in the the size difference based on students and alumni no HBCU Athletic foundation would be close in bringing in what JMU foundation is bringing in when you take away the difference in size.

To me HBCUs needs to develop a model that works for them in order to bring in more money. Ashley Robinsion has shown it can be done at two different HBCUs, PV and JSU, so it not immporsisble to increase the money athletics are getting through athletic foundations or other special funding programs. It just mean you need to have the right people at the top.

When did that game happen? When did James Madison University play Colorado? Because I am not finding this game.
That 1-11 lost some coaches and a lot of those kids were first-second year. There were 7 Juniors. A team just removed from a bowl game.
So why insult a school that didn't play JMU?

JMU has made the MEAC their bytch.
JMU never whored out their basketball team for checks. In fact look at what they do in basketball-they generally ONLY play teams in their state. Where they had winning records against 8 out 13 teams. While in the CCA they had winning records versus 2 out of 9.

Maybe the SWAC should stop those check games and play teams closer to home to save money and build from there.

They gave Liberty a waiver to move up because no one would take them. Well, were sorta in the same boat. No fbs conference has ever extended an invitation to a hbcu. so they should make room for us, not by providing a waiver for one school, that couldn't survive or thrive on it's own, but a conference could make it's way.

Youtube tv has moved into live sports with the nfl. espn is now looking for a partner and so we should explore any and all broadcast partners and if the money isn't right... like it wasn't for the pac-12, we have to prepare to build our own.

I'll need to take a closer look. thought most of our schools were sponsoring the max # of scholarships for sponsored sports.

for a few of our schools I could certainly see an issue. If possible, I'd keep the conference intact for all sports except football. for football I'd have a fbs and fcs tier. they still get to play in football but the fbs teams would always host and pay them top dollar to do so, helping their bottom line. when they are ready to move up they'd be able to do so.
