Appears the SWAC isn't the only FCS conference that wants to move up as a whole

Albany, I believe, currently has all the needed sports for the move up to D1 … not FBS D1, but current SWAC D1.

Personally, I think it’s a fool’s errand. But, we have to do something to energize our respective bases and brands

Three short.

Men and women’s track and field would need to participate indoors plus they’d need to add men’s cross country (they have women’s)

I just don't recall a SERIOUS discussion of the SWAC moving to FBS. Honestly, I don't see it occurring anytime soon. We have schools struggling to sponsor the full allotment of scholarships at the FCS level. Let's not even start to talk about our records against top FCS programs.

Anyway, guess it is Ok to dream without a real plan these days.. lol

I dont agree with the plan BUT they do have a PLAN.
According to the commissioner, the SWAC is positioning itself to move up.
Its not for you or me to see/understand. They get paid to see if it's feasible.

I definitely agree with you but according to the Commish, we generate more money as a conference than most G5 conferences. Its just the local/internal money that is not there yet, I suppose. Also, it will soon be time to renegotiate with ESPN. Maybe we can get a REAL deal with them or someone else.

There is nothing wrong with it especially if it gives every other school a chance to get on the same page and the deals made allow the schools to do so

You know there are still those that wanna leave Valley and UAPB back from the jump while others still long for that super HBCU conference with schools that barely wanna be HBCUs let alone be in a conference with them
Its not just Valley and UAPB that need to be left back. But the same reasons why schools like Valley, AAMU, BCU, UAPB, etc... are in the SWAC rather than where they SHOULD be (SIAC) are the same reasons the SWAC wants to move up.

Some of you all are talking about expansion but the Big 3 cant keep carrying a conference. If Morehouse, Ft. Valley, Albany, etc.. want to move up, they need to call the MEwAC.

What money are we moving up with? Most of our school are barley keeping their doors open.
We have to trust our leaders and their plan. The Commish seems to have a plan. I would assume he is in talks with fellow commissioners to get a feel for how it all works and what is needed. It would still need a vote by the Presidents. In reality, the extra scholarship hit will only $500K to $1M per year. Most of us already currently sponsor the requisite number of sports.

If they call the MEAC, they officials in the MEAC need to hang up the phone unless 4 or more schools are looking to move up at the same time. The reason the MEAC is in the shape they are in is in part because they expanded to Florida to keep the conference alive and ended up causing long term financial stability problems that resulted in MEAC schools dropping sports left and right along with schools planning their exit. Unless a school is the current footprint of the MEAC (South Carolina to Delaware), it makes no sense to add a school unless there are multiple schools coming in that are close together in order to switch to pod scheduling.

Right now the MEAC need to work on getting football back at UMES and Coppin State along with any additional female sports to take care of any title 9 issues before trying to expand. If you get those two back into the fold, then you will have a total of 8 schools and you could look at adding Virginia State and maybe Benedict to make 10 schools (provided they want to move up and can support it). VSU will bring back the instate rival with NSU in Virginia and Benedict would be a rival for SCSU in South Carolina. Once that is done and everything is stable then you can sweep in 4 schools from the SIAC that are relitaively close outside of the core region.

Also, the MEAC needs to start looking at the paper work on schools financials, as just letting anyone in without make sure they can stay D1 is just plain stupid. I will give the SWAC credit that they did look at the financials for Morris Brown and backed away from letting them join the SWAC. The MEAC should of done that to WSSU.

I know this that once the new rules take effect all this talk of the SWAC moving up as conferance will be done with. 5 million dollars per school and supporting all scholarship at D1 level (which I have seen estimates that the cost of those scholarships will be 5 to 6 million). The thing that I am confused about is when people talk about that schools having the money to move up, why are they are not provided scholarships at a D1 level now. When JMU moved up they was already supporting scholarships at the D1 level, so thus the only that change for them was the application fee and the new conference dues.

And I repeat, with what money? There are D-2 schools that are better funded than SWAC & some MEAC Schools.

How are we going to compare with JMU with an enrollment of 20,000+ and I live in the VA, where their alum do get behind their school and give? The plan was well in place before they made the move up.

And you make a good point on if we are barley funding scholarships on the FCS Level. Then how will we do in on the D-1 Level?

There are no D2 schools better funded than us. Also, as I already stated, the Commish says we make more than most G5 conferences. Do you see JMU asking how they gonna compete with Alabama. And again, its almost time to renew our TV contract. Our commish has our numbers and should be able to get us a REAL deal.

Im not saying it will be easy but at some point we gotta stop thinking black and believe we can get things done.
I remember people saying we would never see a black President in our lifetime. Now we have had that and a black female (but some people say she dont claim black).

Some people thought we would never get a coach like Prime or 4 or 5 star recruits. Let's stop being black. We can do ANYTHING we want if we leave that slave mentality alone.

And for the third time, with what money? We cannot even beat the JMU's

And we barley give because we are too busy spending it on everything else. But when our HBCU's ask for it, we cry and complain.
Maybe you tagged the wrong folks

I know we don't like the truth! We do not give like we should. Always looking for someone else to do what we can do for ourselves. We have money, if we stop giving it to material possessions that we are so in love with that we think make us important. But if our schools went up two dollars on ticket prices, the crying will never end.

Yes, JMU made the move, but it was a ten year plan and that I know because it was in the (804) papers. Have a plan and follow through with it. Move up, if it is done right and not just to say we are D-1.

I have no idea what you're talking about. Wrong person tagged

I am not saying it can't be done, but we know the rules to get it done and thus you would think that there would signs of progress to that fact. 1. NCAA is not approving any conference to move up together, as they took care of that loop hole years ago. Unless the SWAC is planning one of the lawsuits against the NCAA that was file on the behalf of HBCUs, then it is a mute point talking about moving up as whole conference. 2, Not all the schools are equal in the SWAC when it comes to finances, so even with a influx of clash through any type of deals, you will still have teams unable to make the jump to d1. 3. If the SWAC schools really plan to jump as a group of schools that could make it, then they will need to find a conference home that will take that many number of schools and then you have to consider what will happen to the schools like Valley that will have to stay behind or go back to D2. 4. The only conference that will really make sense would be conference USA, which would plug geographic issues with their current school line, but the flip side of that schools will have to deal with an increase in travel cost given the wide foot print of conference usa

I am not down on SWAC or even MEAC schools moving up, but people need to be realistic how it can be done. Expecting for ESPN deal to generate a massive income is as logically as me planning my life around winning the lottery. ESPN parent company is in trouble and they are laying off people, so I would not expect a massive increase in media rights for ESPN to the SWAC. What I would like to see if the SWAC or MEAC schools are planning to move up then, they need to start setting the ground work to do so, but at least supporting all scholarships on FCS level. If you can't even do that, then how are the schools expecting to all of sudden support the same scholarships at a D1 one level.

Our people have succeed regardless of all the hardships that we have been put through in this country, so I believe we can do things if we set our minds to it by having a logical and realistic long term plan to reach the goal. What I don't want to see is us setting goals or doing things and hoping that everything will turn out alright, as that mind set it what help lead to St. Paul closing (they brought back football when they was having hard financial times and end up loosing money every football season).

You do know that HBCUs give just as much as PWI counterparts, right?
The gap is created with corporate sponsorships and TV money. We dont control those purse strings.

JMU sucks but they also are the size of 3-4 SWAC schools put together.
