Anthony Jones is OUT

Re: Coach Jones

We missed the opportunity to attract good coaches when we started paying Pete $200k plus. From what I understand, the individual who was the coach at McNeese then, inquired about being SU's coach after Pete's big contract expired the first time. I'm sure that $90k to $100k pay raise was his attractive interest. Instead, we gave Pete another 3 year contract extension.

Yeah we opened that Pandora's Box in the early 2000's when Pete got that big contract. The PWCs in FCS never followed that route. Only Ga Southern paid their coach more than Pete back then in PWC FCS world. But the HBCUs all followed suit with these huge contracts. When App State legendary coach Jerry Moore retired not that long ago, he had just gotten up to 200 plus K and he had won National titles and coached there forever. The coach at ND State is just now approaching that type of money and he was a FBS assistant at Nebraska before going to ND State.

We screwed the pooch on that salary isht.

Re: Coach Jones

The jury is still out on Odums. He has only been SU's coach for one full season. Next year will be the proof in the pudding on how he follows up this season and improves with his coaching. You just don't like Odums. Ain't like he was a retread. He got an opportunity with players that are not his and we will see where he goes. I keep telling you clowns, the SWAC ain't going to attract some big name black or white assistant to coach in FCS. There are not many black coaches on staffs at these PWC FCS schools and the white boys think they have upside to get to FBS or at least be a head coach at a FCS PWC. So all you are going to be able to do is try to pry another HBCU head coach from them at the D2 level or some HBCU assistant who wants a chance. Yall leave in fairy tale land. Our jobs ain't as attractive as talking about. That goes for the MEAC as well. They got a handful of decent coaches but none that are lights out. Broadway, Jenkins and Pough at SC State are good coaches with 2 of them on their downside as they get older. The young hot assistants get scooped up and taken to FBS land where you can't get them back once they are gone. I would have loved to see what former SU TE Cal Magee who is the OC at Arizona could have done at SU. But we can't afford him. There is a Valley alum (Vincent Brown) who played LB who is at Virginia under London. Maybe he can be had if London gets fired this season. But more than likely London will get another FCS head coaching gig and Brown will follow him.

So basically you will have to roll the dice on coaches who are unproven or were bad situation. If Odums beats yall this weekend you are going to want to kick Comegy's arse. LOL. Even though Comegy has his faults. He is the most accomplished coach in the conference. What the problem is we PAY TOO MUCH for head coaches and not enough is left for quality assistants who may be up and coming. We are bad about missing out on guys then they surface at a PWC never to return.

1. The jury is in on Odums. He might eek out 7 wins a year but you and I both know that's not what SU alums want.

2. BCS assistants are out of our league, but some of the non-BCS schools (MAC, CUSA) as well as assistants from successful on our level are within our price range and worth a look. For some reason when we think non-HBCU, our minds instantly jump to SEC and ACC level coaches. Those non-BCS assistants aren't getting paid that much. We can get some of them.

3. You mentioned Vincent Brown at Virgina. Every year you have good assistants that get spun off the coaching carousel. London's next FCS job will be as an assistant and Brown might not get another job - at least not next year. You have guys like Tyrone Nix, former hot DC prospect in the SEC making just over 100K at Middle Tn State. There's a number of coaches out there to be had if you put the work in on the search.

4. 200k for Pete was out of line THEN, but now you need at least that if you're going to hire and retain a good coach. It depends on the school. Some schools really shouldn't pay more than 150K for a coach; but I would be willing to pay over 250K for the right coach at JSU because if he puts a product on the field that allows us to maximize fan support, he's well worth it. If he's a bust - well that's why you write buyouts into the contract. Comegy makes over 200K but his buyout is only 50K.

Here is an article talking about how hard it is to keep coaches on the FCS level. Especially good ones. These are the white folks talking so maybe some of the folks on TSPN will listen. LOL. Nobody really good at coaching is trying to stay on the FCS level long. White or Black. Only a few make really great salaries and even then, they are looking for the big move so their salary can jump. Some schools are paying a lot like James Madison or Delaware. Schools that are lower tier FBS schools in FCS clothing. We don't need to be doing that though. Some of those schools can afford to do so.

When Robin Pflugrad signed his three-year contract in 2010 for $155,000 per year, it made him the 10th highest paid coach at the FCS level, with the other nine at schools east of the Mississippi River. That has since changed, and the increases are headed our way. North Dakota State head football coach Craig Bohl had a base salary of almost $200,000 last year, and with incentives, reached more than $260,000. Others are following and feeling the need and pressure to make somewhat competitive offers to the coaches they currently employee.

We are not in an enviable spot. With the average medium income for a Montana family being about $45,000 per year, don’t look for things to change much in the near future.

Hey I agree with most of what you posted. SU alums are definitely in the wait and see mode. But that's why he only got a 2 year deal with the 3rd year being a SU option. I am sure they will pick the option up since he did get to the SCG win or lose.

As for London, he might get a FBS level assistant gig because of his connections. Don't know how well he can recruit. If he can, that alone will get him a high paying FBS assistant job which will still leave Vincent Brown available. Maybe someone should give him a call in SWAC land. AAMU has an opening.

JSU has a sweet buyout. I would hope all our schools did that. I still don't know if we will attract the right guys for 230K. I don't want guys who just trying to get paid but can't coach or lazy. That will get you a lower tier FBS level assistant coach to come. Don't know how many of them are interested in our level though.

Nix has been contacted by some FCS HBCU and PWC folks. I got that on good authority. He still trying to stay at the FBS level to get that DC job again. Sometimes folks will play the waiting game at a lower tier FBS school. Don't understand it. But it is what it is.

I always get the FBS and FCS mixed up but you know what I meant with London. He's a great recruiter so he'll get

Nix...unless I'm mistaken he was still getting that Ole Miss money until this year because of his buyout. Those idiots were paying him 500K a year - way above his price range. That swelled his head up but someone close to him needs to let him know that's not gonna happen again. He hasn't really distinguished himself enough at MTSU to warrant a BCS promotion. I still think he'd make a good coach on our level.

I hear Mike Haywood is the same way - turning down lower division offers holding on to the BCS dream. Meanwhile he's been unemployed for 3 years and College football is passing him by. He'd better wake up. I'm intrigued by he and Nix but those black coaches that have worked exclusively at top schools scare me. I'd prefer someone that's worked their way through the system. Tim Edwards from UL-Lafayette is one I'd watch - but he's going to be out of our price range soon. Chris Beatty as well.

Re: Coach Jones

Bryan Hicks, the director of athletics at Alabama A&M, sat at the head of the conference table in his office Monday morning, ticking off a list of five priorities.

"Like I tell all our coaches, first and foremost, it's our student-athletes and their experience, making sure they have the best quality education possible. Second, we've got to be compliant (with NCAA rules). Third we've got to be fiscally responsible. Spend what we have. Don't spend what we don't have. Then we've got to exude class in all that we do and really put the best we have to offer for future Alabama A&M students.

"And then, you know, we need to be competitive. We want do it the right way."

I'll tell you what I told Hicks as I sat with him at the table:

Anthony Jones met all five of those criteria.

This is what I was saying...po AJ

Mike Haywood ain't unemplyed... he's just not coaching. He will continue to do what he's doing in the corporate world (oil and ga$$) until he gets the right phone call. He actually interviewed for the Tulane job a few years ago.

I'm glad he's gainfully employed, but if he ever wants to get back to being a eadcoach, he'd better start making moves.

I would not raise the HC salary at JSU one bit. I would raise the OC and DC salaries.

You all should cut your HC salary and distribute it to your OC & DC. No way your HC should be making more than Dawson Odums.

Re: Coach Jones

Look at the mans resume in the SWAC
correct me if I'm wrong.

He's been to the scg 6 times in 12 years.
I'm sure he has a winning record in the MCC
He has run a good clean program
He had a winning record last season, he even started out 7-0

To fire that guy after ONE bad season knowing he just lost at least 15 starters from the season before is low down, personal, and just something to get the new ADs guy on board. I hope the new guy has losing seasons for the next 5 years cause the AD is tied directly to him. He could've at least given the guy another year. This some bull

And of those 6 times how many SCGs did he win?

Re: Coach Jones

Jones shot himself in the foot when he lost that SCG to Gram. If he had won that game he would gotten an extension on his contract that year. Instead of making changes to his staff after that game, he stayed loyal.

The man lost most of his offense last year. I want to see ya'll do better than him. It can't be easy getting players come out there.

Re: Coach Jones

That should not matter to a team like AAMU. They are really not expected to win Championships. He overachieved greatly by their standards.

Damn shame. :shame:

Anyway...

I feel you AAMU. AJ was given 12 years. More time than most athletic programs would have been willing to give a coach. He was a good guy, but I understand the need to want to move forward. Good luck in the search.

It's more things to do in Huntsville than Jackson so its not hard to get players to come to A&M....Jones just didn't know how to recruit

you don't know what you are talking about lol

:goof:

Huntsville may have more good paying jobs than Jackson. But let's not make it seem like it is soooo much to do there. Neither is some metropolis that is jumping. Now I will give Huntsville credit for it's growth and having a lot of educated technical folks move there and it is paying off for the area. But neither Huntsville or Jackson is going to jump out at a recruit when it comes to doing stuff.

Houston is the only major city in the SWAC. So outside of TxSU and PV being close enough to drive to H-town. Nobody can boast on things to do. It is all what in what unless you are really in the country or small towns like Alcorn, Grambling, Pine Bluff, and Valley. Jackson, Baton Rouge, Montgomery are all capital cities of their state so they have some advantages. Huntsville is probably better for the established folks more than the kids.

Your campus is nice and that is the prime selling point to me. Good academics and if they like Huntsville they probably can get a good job when they graduate.

Dude ...first of all you are from Grambling sooooo......
(Smokey send help)

Secondly just getting to the scg is good enough for AAMU. He went 50% of his tenure. Going forward I don't wanna hear nothing about good coaches who graduate players as a as the most important quality. This guy did all of that plus he won. Yet Stimey thought it was a good idea to fire the guy after just one year. AAMU is not a football school the fans don't show up they get no support. AAMU is going to have a losing season every 4 years or so. So what!!!! Ain't nobody there watching anyway. The nerve of them. I wish JSU would hire Jones in some type leadership capacity.

Keep your head up Jones.

MightyDog, you couldn't stop this madness
