Alabama A&M fires football coach Anthony Jones

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama -- Anthony Jones, whose Alabama A&M team suffered through its third losing season in his 12-year tenure, will not have his contract renewed, the school announced Sunday afternoon.

Director of athletics Bryan Hicks was not available for comment on the decision. He did issue a statement in a press release emailed to local media at 4:30 Sunday.

"We are very grateful and appreciative of the work he has done with A&M athletics. We thank Coach Jones for his efforts and leadership of the football program and wish him much success in his future endeavors," Hicks said.

Jones was 83-57 in his 12 seasons at A&M, with the third-highest winning percentage of any coach in A&M history. His team had the highest academic scores in a conference where a number of teams have recently been ineligible for postseason play because of academics.

This is a terrible sad move

You could be correct. I have seen many SWAC schools fire coaches and hire someone that sets them further behind. Good luck to Coach Jones in his future endeavors. I have heard of rumors pertaining to Willie Slater from Tuskegee or Ruffin at Miles College. Some of the alumni do not want to bring in a Coach from that level. However, they want someone with SEC, ACC etc. experience. If that is the case, we will have to pay for those kind of services. This is going to be interesting....

SUprised. I thought Jones did a great job with the talent he had.

I don't know why you and others are surprised.

When Jones got a 1 year contract we told yall what time it was if we didn't go to the SCG...our AD aint playing no games and wants to bring his people in....

Ron Cooper might want to come back somebody call USF now you will have to pay him at least 300 grand!

Doug Williams is available and since his son is finishing up his years at GSU next year this would be a good time to hire Doug. After a year he can show his nepotism and hire his son as Assistant Head/Offensive Coordinator...:emlaugh:

Im sure Im in the minority but I would be glad to have Coach Cooper back..... Im sure he learned from the last time that he cant come in with that dictatorship attitude. One thing I will say.... HE BROUGHT TALENT in.... now he swapped them at positions every week, and if you had a bad game you just may not see the field the rest of the year... but he brought in talent! Cooper did alot of good for AAMU.

That was before APR came into existence.

Everything you said...but Cooper according to what I've heard...well...I'll just say he was a wild boy in the locker room from the stories I've heard from players of his....now if his name came up I would not be surprised at all..

I personally would love to see Brick Haley as coach. He was considered when Jones was hired, but I know he is waaaaay out of reach now...
