I saw on the news that Alcorn has called a press conference for tomorrow at 10 a.m. The conference is about the "Wiz" Davey Whitney. I guess he is going to announce if he's going to retire or return for another season.
Rick Whitlow said he thinks that Whitney is going to return. What do you think he is going to do?

I bet Whitlow is right. I am sure Whitlow heard something through the grapevine. Whitney just never seemed ready to retire this year. Plus since it had already been annouced he was retiring at the end of the season, there would need to be no press conference unless he changed his mind. I think he should come back. If not , then Alcorn should find a way to lure my homeboy Larry "Mr. Mean" Smith from the Houston Rockets to come back to the reservation. I remember he wanted that job the first time Whitney left. But Alcorn went with Walker I believe. It would be difficult now, but Smith may still be interested. I don't see him coaching the Rockets unless Rudy T gets promoted to the front office. But as I said, my bet is Whitney will be back for one more year.

Why call a press conference?

To make an official statement that 2002-2003 season will be his last and to take advantage of an opportunity to get some press time.

He's Staying

He is very high on the players he has returning and may have some good recruits waiting and this will give the University time to make an offer to Mr. Mean or get Sam West ready to take over.

SAM WEST HAS BEEN READY

I feel that as long as he is getting the job done and he is in good health and is enjoying what he is doing,he should stay.

In B'ham he looked better than he looked ten years ago.

He's Coming Back

Whitney will return for 27th season at Alcorn State

The Associated Press

LORMAN ? Alcorn State coach Davey L. Whitney, the winningest coach in Southwestern Athletic Conference history, has pushed retirement back at least another year.

The 72-year-old basketball coach announced today he will return for a 27th year with the Braves.

Whitney led Alcorn State to the NCAA tournament for the sixth time this season. The Braves lost to Siena in a play-in game after winning the SWAC tournament and regular season championships.

Before the 2000-2001 season, Whitney said that this would be his final year. He backed off those statements during the just-ended season and said after the Siena game he would take a couple of weeks to make his decision.

Whitney is 496-274 at Alcorn State and 551-338 overall. He began his head coaching career with Texas Southern in 1964.

Under Whitney's direction, the Braves in 1980 became the first SWAC team to win an NCAA tournament game.

He has led Alcorn State to 11 regular-season SWAC titles. He won his 500th career game in 1999 with a 91-72 victory over Prairie View A&M.

Alcornite 86 I don't know what anyone else would call all of that

But I call all of those facts of history

TOTAL DOMINATION

The "Wiz" is pure genius with his leadership & coaching
Alcorn putting its foot in black history again.

Simply put, the man can flat out coach. I remember his teams during the '70s, and they were to be feared.
