CHRONOLOGY OF COACH WHITNEY'S CAREER
What has taken place with the Alcorn State men's basketball program during 1969-86 and 1996-present.........
- Alcorn State has won its last twelve Southwestern Athletic Conference regular season titles (the school has 16 overall) in 1973, 1976, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1999, 2000 and 2002.
- All of Alcorn State's seven SWAC Tournament titles have come during this period in 1979, 1980, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1999 and 2002.
- Coach Whitney has been named the SWAC Coach of the Year ten times.
- Alcorn State has won both the regular season and tournament titles five times in 1980, 1982, 1984, 1999 and 2002.
- Alcorn State has made seven trips to the NCAA tournament in 1980, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1999, 2000 and 2002 in which they currently sport a 3-6 overall
record.
- In 1980, Alcorn State became the first Historically Black College or University (HBCU) to ever win a game in the NCAA tournament with a 70-62
victory over South Alabama.
- In 1979, Alcorn State became the first HBCU to ever participate in the National Invitational Tournament in which they posted a 80-78 victory over interstate rival, Mississippi State while losing to eventual champion Indiana. Alcorn State made a return trip to the NIT in 1985.
- Alcorn State participated in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) national tournament for five straight years in 1973, 1974, 1975, 1976 and 1977.
- In 1999, Alcorn State won The American Sports Wire National Black College National Championship.
- Alcorn State has posted 14 20-win seasons during this span including streaks of eight (1972-73 through 1979-89) and four (1981-82 and 1984-85)
consecutive seasons. In addition, Alcorn State has won 25 or more games in six seasons including a 28-0 mark during the 1978-79 regular season.
- On December 20, 1999, Coach Whitney won his 500th career victory with a 91-72 win over the Prairie View A&M Panthers at the William H. Nicks
Building on Prairie View A&M's campus.
- On January 12, 2002, Alcorn State won its 1000th game of the program's history with a 88-77 victory over the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils at the Harrison HPERD Complex in Itta Bena, Mississippi.
- Alcorn State had a 32-game home court win streak dating back to the 1997-98 season which was snapped by a 77-76 loss to Grambling State on
February 5, 2001. This win streak was ranked second in the country among NCAA Division I schools.
- In the past four years, Alcorn State has won three regular season SWAC championships, one tournament title and a trip to the NCAA tournament along with a 58-7 mark in conference play over the past four years. Also during the same time span, Alcorn State has posted a 43-2 home court record while going undefeated at home in three of those seasons.
