Alabama State does not belong in the NCAA Tournament

So, again I ask, what's changed? In the last 20 years, what's changed besides everything going downhill fast competitive wise?

Maybe it's the players all these schools are getting.
If all I am seeing is a school with "leaders" happy to send me out on the road to get beat up by PWCs for a check
An on campus fanbase that acts like they don't care
Coaches that can't coach (Southern fans you know who I am talking about)
Alum keeping their pocketbooks closed
NOBODY (except us on this board) upset when the teams get molested by PWC on tv
No one coming to defense of me when other PWC networks with tokens (yes JIM JACKSON I'm looking at YOU) bashing the program
Why oh why should I GAF? Just get my degree and NEVER come back when I graduate.

Maybe your players don't really care anymore. Maybe it's time for every school to really look at itself and decide are we going to stay the same or will we try to improve. Get rid of your dead weight everywhere. Get some folks running these team that will gradaute players and win some games. The goal of every team should be a record of 500 or better as a conference. Even if that means taking on every BOTTOM FEEDER PWC out there.

So, athletic $$$$$ recvd goes back into the general fund? :what: :uhoh:

Not over here man. They are separate. Genr'l funds, inclusive of tax $$$ :read:, go to support the univ ops. Athletics is a self-sufficient entity here. :read:

Panther88, I would love to know what your athletic budget is and where you generate those millions. From your home football games and two classics, you MIGHT gross 1.5 million. Are you charging your students 300 per semester in athletic fees?

Even if the money is not going to the general fund...it's earmarked for ATHLETICS not basketball.

Forget the below 500 teams-how many teams with big wins, 20+ wins and so on would have gotten inif those auto bids weren't there. Colorado, Colorado State, Baylor, Hostra, Minnesota, North Texas and others.

Georgetown & Coppin State made the tourney with losing records. In fact Coppin was the first 20 loss tema and they barely lost that play in game.

THe confeerence that the SWA should go after for wins is America East-they seems to not mind gettign abused by the MEAC. So gettign abused by the SWAC shouldn't bother them.
That's what I'm saying Sky. These schools like Colorado, Virginia Tech, and others will be pushing the NCAA to allow more 20+ win teams in instead of these teams below .500.

I'm thinking that it's more diverse than just earmarked as "athletics" @ PVAMU. If I recall correctly, there are separate accounts for each individually (#s :read: ). I recall specifically as there was a new one created for a 50K$ deal my former alum chapt donated to help erect a new weightroom as well as another 50K$ donated a few mos prior from the group about Houston for the same cause - both had differing account #s tagged for each in the fiscal recvbls dept. :read:

Also, recall yrs ago that PV went up on its SSF (student-service fees), specifically relating to athletics (had to have state approval and approval of the undergrad body as well during that time :read: ). W/ just over 8900 students... do the math. Also, sTu just did the same thing w/in the last few years. :read: Guess who has the top athletic budget(s) in the SWAC (currently)?

Man it has been this way since the 80s... these schools are not about to do a doggone thing.

Believe that if you want. A change is coming, best believe dat (Sam Cooke) send help. Just because things have always been done that way, doesnt dictate that they will stay that way.

beans,
The tournament is big money. If anything, The NCAA will expand it with even more teams. Not make it less inclusive. What you're suggesting is that they will do away with automatic bids. That's the only way to bar sub .500 teams.

Admittingly, the SWAC has had our share of "Kool-Aid" Champions as of late. However, if a team wins and earns the right
to play in a tournament rather it be NIT or the Big Dance, they are going. We may not like it, but that is just the way it is.
I didn't smack Texas Southern and Alabama State about the SCG due to them not deserving to be there...I was smacking statistics and the road each took to get there (it's not my fault both decided to schedule Tuskegee).

As far as "Kool-Aid Champions" who was that SWAC Football team out the SWAC East in 2008 who got blew out in the SCG that year? We could have argued that they didn't deserve to play in the SCG 2008. But they did because that is all that matters...no matter their record. They earned the right because they won the SWAC East that year. So why are they complaining about Alabama State going to the Big Dance?

Why is it that the only folks against Bama St is coming from JSU? This is beyond sad.

Why is it ya'll can't read and comprehend. We was talking about the article and every swac team. Yall didn't want to discuss the article, the preception of this conference, or new ideas about how is the best way to pick the team to go from the SWAC.

Ya'll turned this into a JSU thing so like always, ya'll want to smack and then get all sensitive when people respond back.

1.) HBCUs don't really have athletic budgets. We budget what we have to spend. JSU should have a lower budget based on travel expense alone.

2.) We have earmarks for programs as well, but that is mainly donated money. Money generated from bball and football are not earmarked from those programs. They get the lion's share of the budget anyway.

I have a question for JSU posters:

Did the football team who represented the SWAC East in 2008 SCG deserve to be there?

Some times the truth hurts, bro.

Nothing wrong with the truth but if we scour the internet and find only one article downing the SWAC and it's from one of US, it's truly pathetic. Why don't you do a series...talk about some other schools and conferences. You did the same thing when it came to Comegy about APR when you had no facts on the matter.

As MH said, all of the other articles have been positive.

Again, truly sad on your part. :smh:

Panther88,

True! There has not been a significant investment in SWAC men's basketball programs (outside of one institution) over the last 10 to 15 years outside of increasing head coaching salaries and for some an additional paid assistant. Thus far even the increase in that particular schools men's basketball program (although it has been a relatively short sample size in terms of time) has yet to prove more than what we have viewed from other programs of making a run to the top of the conference every couple of years.

I believe the investment that you are referring to in regards of becoming more competitive would mean HBCU programs and HBCU alums of their respective programs would have enter into the arms-race of athletics. I do not believe this is realistic. The other options would be moving to Division II. This would reduce the burden (of becoming competitive) off of becoming competitive from the current student body and alums that happen be in debt by United States standards based on the requirement of needing to take out school loans to pay for their education in the first place. These HBCU alums are often the lowest paid entering into the field of the choice when compared to their European American counterparts.

But, we all understand that there are alums that would not support this. More importantly those in the academy (presidents/chancellors, commissioners, athletic directors, coaches and etc.) that are paid relatively well because their institution operates at the Division I level will not support a move to Division II status, as well. So in my estimation we all need to get use to it (like the MEAC, American East, Big South, Big Sky, MAAC, North East, and Southland, and etc. (Great West waiting on bid) because it will not change. This is simple were we are.

Guys, Basketball will always be second rate to Football. Basketball is popular right at this very moment because it is the only sport on television that keeps us entertained. As soon as the NBA Finals go off in June, everybody will start looking forward to football season.

Speaking specifically regarding the state tax $$$$$ and how it's segregated, allegedly :read:, from athletic coffer(s). Athletics is SUPPOSED to be self-sufficient but I'm not sure what Prairie View is doing and I'd HOPE the aTm mothership (system) has a strong checks and balances mechanism in place so that a repeat of 1989 going back doesn't occur, again. The "malfeasance."
