Alabama State does not belong in the NCAA Tournament

Alabama State has no business playing for a national championship. At least that’s what’s being intimated by the national press prior to the Hornets (17-17) opening round game versus Texas-San Antonio (19-13) on Wednesday.

“Alabama State has the NCAA tourney’s worst recordâ€￾ was the Associated Press headline, and it was immediately reproduced in newspapers and on web sites throughout the country.

Yep, once again a historically black college squad has a big embarrassing scarlet letter across its chest.

They going in deep on the SWAC not just Bama State.

Our own fault.
Every year the best teams go to the SWAC Tournament and fail to get the job done. It was just a matter of time before teams with losing or .500 records going to the NCAA Tournament came back to bite this conference in the azz. :smh:

I'm taking all bets now.
THIS IS THE LAST YEAR THAT THE NCAA LET A TEAM WITH A LOSING RECORD INTO THE TOURNAMENT. ESPECIALLY after they left ALABAMA and a couple others out this year.

Forget an auto-bid. A new "exception rule" is comming.

Well that's the #1 and #2 teams fault hell those teams lose in the first round also, our scheduling needs to change. We need to stop playing so many of the elite teams and get thrashed by them.

The dough made from these games and the SWAC Tournament has gone to waste. <b>The conference is running in circles, but few fail to realize it.</b>

THAT is the ONLY quote I agree w/ from the article. THAT is dead on.

SWAC alums had better wake up! Coaches like <b>"ijuswannaknow"</b> and the current athletic staffs in place (not all as a whole, only pieces of it) are RUINING this once great conference. :read:

I'll bet from now on, the conference tournament won't carry as much weight. The only weight it will carry is to get a second team in that had a hellofa year if warrented. From now on, look for the regular season champ get the nod if they fail in the conference tournament.

Count on this "just in case" rule comming.

Tried to tell yall in those other threads that the SWAC needs to send its regular season champion to the NCAA Tournament like the Ivy League. The crap we're doing is so fuggin ridiculous.

In fact, no SWAC school in forever it seems has measured up.

This is to the entire conference. No matter who we would have sent they would have got knocked out the tournament is what many feel and are saying.

This is'nt the first time a team with a .500 or below record has made the field. You act like the Swac is the only conferance that has done this. If this was one of those PWC conference's, this would be a non-issue, just a fluke of the tournament winners that won and got the bid.

And no this will not be the last year the NCAA let a team in the field with a record like this. Each conference determines who gets the automatic qualifier bid that will represent the conference.

I don't agree. The best team in the SWAC right NOW is Alabama State. They deserve to go.

Not even gonna argue with you on this.

BTW:
When they were discussing matchups, they didn't even talk about Alabama State. They already "INKED IN" the other team as Ohio States opponent, talked about that team and moved on.

No the hell they don't, the same way other teams like Colorado who "turn it on" in the latter half of the season yet didn't get an invite to the NCAA Tournament. Your invite to the NCAA Tournament is based upon your overall body or work, i.e. OOC wins, RPI, conference wins, etc. Had it not been for our automatic bid, Bama State wouldn't have even gotten into the NIT.

This stuff is making our conference look worse(r).

Man forget all that PWC, White team crap.............AIN'T EVEN HEARING THAT COP OUT. :smh:
This shat is embarrassing year after year. OUR BASKETBALL HAS NOT GOT BETTER. It has gotten worse.
END OF STORY.

We need to start scheduling lower(winnable) teams like the MEAC has begun to do. The SWAC has the hardest OOC schedule in basketball. Alumni need to get off their butts and put more money into basketball so the teams don't have to play all those elite teams.

No. Overall body of work got TxSo the SWAC championship. The tourney got AlaState an NCAA bid. Two different things. Teams should work to improve and that is what AlaState did.

nonchalant,
Your position is weak. You argue that TxSou should be there as opposed to Bama State. Mind you, Bama State WON the right to be there. Heck, if the 8th seeded team won the tournament, they should be there too. Period.
At the start of the tournament, EVERY team knew what was at stake. A trip to the NCAA. Bama State won it. And en route to winning it, they beat the very team you want to say should be there. In fact, Bama State beat every other SWAC team.

And for folks who want to make the case that the SWAC's regular season champ should automatically get the NCAA spot, thats BS too. If the reg season champ can't win the SWAC tournament, what makes you think they will have a much greater outcome in the Big Dance than others.

And you're right, if Bama State had not won the tourney, we would not have gotten an invite to the NIT. And by the same token, if there was not an automatic invite to reg season winners, TxSou would not have gotten an invite either.

We lose those games too. What we NEED are bigger athletes and better shooters...but we mainly need bigger athletes. The SWAC team that gets two quality big men will not lose a SWAC game but those are elusive to us.

Had it not been for automatic bids, we would not have a team in the post season period.

The sad thing is, our conference champion has never won a tournament game including the play in game......

conference champ or tourney champ?

Regardless, any NCAA wins and close wins are 15 years old. We can't compete with any mid-majors right now.

This is where I stopped reading. When are the conference champion, you DEFINATELY need to be representing our conference in the NCAA Tournament. Who gives a damn about a 4-day tournament? Our conference is basically telling the NCAA that our regular season doesn't mean anything and we put all of our "credibility" in our conference tournament. That's the dumbest crap I've ever heard.
