HUNTSVILLE, Alabama - Alabama A&M, the city of Huntsville and the Huntsville City School Board of Education reached a joint agreement Thursday night that will result in new articificial turf at Louis Crews Stadium with middle and high school games to be played there possibly as early as this season.
"How big of a thrill is it going to be for players to run into that big, magnificent stadium?," city councilman Bill Kling asked.
The agreement, which will cost the city $289,000 and runs through August 31, 2021, calls for the university to complete the installation of the artificial turf no later than Oct. 1.
If the turf is not installed, the middle and high school games will have to be relocated and the Board of Education will receive a credit against charges becoming due under the agreement for later use of the stadium.
The agreement also calls for the university to allow the Huntsville Sports Commission to use the stadium.
"It's a beautiful stadium that needs to be used," Huntsville mayor Tommy Battle said.
Battle said the city needed a nice venue for middle and high school games and striking a deal to play at Louis Crews Stadium saved $6million, which he said was the cost for the city to build a new stadium from scratch.
The board and the city will pay A&M a stadium use fee of $1,750 per game and will pay for stadium cleaning, security, scoreboard and clock operators and announcers. The Board or its designated host school will retain parking revenue.
A&M officials haven't started on the project and sources say it could take up to 10 weeks to install the turf and that's if everything goes well. Because of that, there is some concern if the turf will be installed by the due date. If the project is not completed, A&M may have to play its home opener [- the Louis Crews Classic against Prairie View on Sept. 15 [- at Milton Frank Stadium.
Bryan Hicks, A&M's new athletics director, said he would comment today after the school's Board of Trustees meeting, while head football coach Anthony Jones couldn't be reached for comment.
City councilman Will Culver was thrilled with the agreement.
"I think it's going to be a good econmic tool for north Huntsville with more people going to games," he said.
Middle school games are slated to be played on Monday nights with high schools games to be played on Fridays.
Kling, Culver and councilman Richard Showers are all A&M graduates.
According to the Huntsville City varsity and middle school schedules, 16 games are slated to be played at A&M, beginning Aug. 31 with Huntsville taking on Sparkman in varsity action.
A press conference had been scheduled last February at Louis Crews Stadium to announce the agreement, but it was canceled.

Smart, very smart move by AAMU to have its stadium used (incoming $$$$) while it sits idle Thurs/Fri nights. And, the school board/city is paying addtl' fees for security, clock operations, clean-up as well? Win-win-win.

But I do have a question lol. How in sans hell is AAMU gonna' charge for parking @ a local HS/jrHS game? lol Man.... :smh:

All high schools here charge for parking.

Good deal A@M......... Bring in the extra money.
One question...................Whats the special deal with Artificial Turf being the deal breaker. Whats wrong with the natural grass surface?

Not trying to be funny but aesthetically Crews is a horrible looking stadium. Once those families go through the gates and look waaaay out on that field trying to find their child. Good luck with that....interesting

I don't see why they did this either........

the home high school or the board will get the parking $

All high schools here charge for parking.

This is very, very, very new news to me. I was under the impression all HSs/jrHSs had enough parking so it was basically free, unless it was @ a major venue like Cowboys stadium and even then, they only charged 5-10$ vs the customary 45$ for each vehicle.

Certain schools charge for parking in BR also.

HSs/jrHSs? Mannnnnnnnnnnnnnn... this is really new news to me. Large indpendent venues, I've seen it. Guess I've been in surburbia entirely too long because no local texas school district facility I'd attended over the last 30+ years ever charged for parking. From outer houston to outer dallas/ft worth to austin and about san antonio/san marcos. Not one.

Also, it would be great if AAMU could play host to several playoff games, if not state title games. :read: They'd have 1st dibs on talent that's playing on their home turf. I look @ what ut-austin and a few other schools are doing hosting state playoff/championship games and it's only a natural that the super kids playing @ the HS level would be naturally drawn to the facility they were playing in and also inadvertently learning about. :read:

When PVAMU stopped hosting the former PVUIL state championship games, every single ONE of its sports programs went downhill athletically - fueled by integration, unfortunately.

Kudos Bama A&M. I see y'all are doing it the right way. It's a win-win-win-win-win.

We have always had to pay for parking at high school football games .... Not because of lack of parking just to get extra money for the host school.

School host playoff games here then state championships for all classes rotate between Alabama and Auburn stadiums.

We all understand the correlation on auburn and alabama hosting those state championship games and the caliber of student-athlete they acquire locally, eh? :read:

It IRKS the hell out of me that ut-austin and even ol' funky baylor/aTm have hosted state championship games as well. It's a recruiters dream come true to have those #1/#2 teams loaded w/ talent come in and play on your home turf. It's a win-win scenario for them.

Fort Bend charged for parking a while. I think Pasadena does. It's only $1-$3 a car but they do charge.

I think its $4 to park here then $5 to get in the game..... btw football in North Alabama isnt "big" at all... this is the basketball part of the state. Most schools up here probably lose money during football seaons... Most of our basketball gyms are pretty large for high schools up this way and basketball games can usually outnumber football games unless its a big rivalry. In South Alabama its totally opposite.

Dayum!!!! :smh:

Hope to hell Montgomery county schools don't... :smh: I don't know. Seems plausible to help raise additional $$$$. The season pkg deal in the home area is a trip (550$ for anywhere between 4-5 home games). Even Southlake Carroll's 4500+ person :smh: waiting list :smh: to get those blah-blah thousand dollar season tickets. All this, @ the HS level, it's a trip but a nice revenue generator. :smh:
