A Serious Thread About JSU Football

Co-signed. Yeah, the players had a 4 year layoff, but it's Bell job to get them back mentally focus. He had all summer and 3 straight weeks long now. I personally dont think that Hughes is the total reason and I will not blame the guy for these loses. Point blank. I dont like him either, but I do know that these loses do not go under his record.

I don't see how Hughes isn't the main reason for this. If you agree that he did nothing for the program in 4 years, what did you think the result would be? Its illogical to believe that we could just stand still for 4 years and not face any repurcussions just because "We're Jackson State". Our program has been strong for decades, not because of who we are, but because of the work put in by guys like Bob Hill, W.C. Gordon and James Carson. When you stop putting the work in for 4 years, what do you think is gonna happen? All Bell did by tampering with the offense was get us ready for what was gonna happen next year anyway. If that was the main problem, what happened Saturaday? We passed the ball all over the field. This program has been on the downward spiral for years. Reversing that trend is always a messy process, one that will take some time. But after 4 years of Hughes, it was inevitable.

I think it's sad when you think not going to the championship game equals STANDING STILL. I'm sorry if i'm not among those who believe that we have been "standing still"......8 teams don't go to the championship each year.

Let Bell fugg around and lose a SWAC game.

Hughes got away with more sh*t because atleast he was a Jacksonian. Fans were actually kind to the guy. lol, but this muthaf**** to whom none of us have any ties....smh.

that's deep!!!

Unless you are saying that Hughes left you with NO talent whatsover to even remotely compete, then that statement is kinda out there.

would be interesting to hear you explain game by game (NW, A&T, TnSt) how Hughes was the "main reason" for the loss

wasn't it back in December or Jan when Bell was brought in?
and he's still not being held accountable for the team's performance 9 months later?

whew!

I know yall may be anti-Hughes, but IMO, this is over the top to hold him responsible, considering Bell has been there for the length of time he has.

Its more than failing to make the SCG. Failing to make it to Birmingham was just the end result. The cause was not building upon what was left to you. Its failing to properly develop players, and not having any real structure. There are things that every program must do in order to stay competitive. When you don't do them, you're gonna have some problems. Maybe not right away, or not as bad as other teams, but eventually, the chickens will come home to roost.

What you're seeing from a lot of anti-Bell people is an anti Culberson/Mason sentiment. People will refuse to acknowledge it, but this is the root of it.

Newsflash....That's the only reason Hughes was fired bro. HE DIDN'T MAKE IT TO THE CHAMPIONSHIP. Did you not know that? He was one game away every year.....why else would he be fired? smh.

Bell is gonna fugg around and make it cool to go to Alcorn again.

lol.

p.s. My displeasure with Mason and Culberson is not hidden. I am among those who believe that in HBCU administration the HBCU should be represented. Meaning you should have more JACKSONIANS in key positions. It's a matter of ALLEGIENCE. Mason nor Culb have allegience to JSU. They have no tie to JSU. They don't fuggin care about JSU....and i would say that on the front page of the Clarion Ledger.

It's another case of what is happening at so many Black Colleges. It's a master plan to take power away from these institution's people, the alumni, the students, the fans. We are going backwards as HBCU. College Boards putting coin negroes in leadership roles and using them as puppets. Now i can talk about that all day.

NT, we not only stood still during the Hughes years, we went backwards. Having a staff of

Hughes, Asberry, and Johnson was only a little better than Hughes, Asberry and Kelly (the worst combination of coaches in the history of JSU football). That is 10 steps lower that the coaching we had when Big Daddy was the HC/DC and Shannon was OC. And aside from the catastophe we had when McKinsey was our OC, we had a good staff with Gordon, Cardell Jones, and Big Daddy. Bell and Johnson is a definitely improvement in coaching.

And MH, Bell only had 8 scholarships to give out so he was limited in that respect. At JSU, we don't recruit 1A transfers and JUCO's. We focus on building programs.

Aren't scholarships given on a year to year basis.

You know MH that is the exact same thing we said about Coles when he got caught in his mess. That he should be held responsible and accountable for his team. I truly see where you're coming from.

Man, this world is coming to an end. I havent found anything to argue about with MH.

The difference is all of the allegations at ASU happened under Cole's watch. If he'd been there less than a year, he wouldn't have been responsible.

*Like I said, not making it to the SCG was merely the result. The cause was his incompetance and lack of any plan for the program. And that's why he was fired. Not making it to the SCG in a weak division didn't happen by accident, it happened because the coach wasn't taking care of business.

*We can argue all day about that. All I'll say is this: those people were hired to do a job. And as long as they do their jobs well, I don't care where they came from. All else being equal, we should hire an HBCU/JSU grade. But its foolish to pass over a highly qualified individual who has a lot to offer just because he didn't come from "our world". If that kind of thinking is used, HBCU grads would never work anywhere but black-owned entities.

99, all we are saying is that Hughes is not the only reason for all this. Yes, Hughes put us in a position, but he is not the only reason. How far along during the season that we keep blaming him? When do we start to shift the blame to Bell?

That's all Im saying.

We can sit here and toss around names, trying to blame whomever for our season so far....

But the simple truth is; we aren't a good team right now. We aren't playing up to the level that we're accustomed to. It's not Hughes fault, anymore than it's Bell's fault. Because when it all said and done, and when the ball is snapped, neither Bell or Hughes is out there playing.

If a block was missed, then that kid fugged up.
If a ball was dropped/not caught (when it was clearly catchable), then that kid fugged up.
If a coverage was blown and the the DB or safety got beat, than that kid fugged up.
If the field goal attempt doesn't get 'up' enough to clear the line (and gets blocked), the the kicked fugged up.
If the QB drops the ball, when pulling away from the center, then the QB fugged up....
If the OL doesn't block ANYBODY, even allowing the back-judge to run into the backfield, then all five of them (the OL) fugged up.

Right now, we just have some fugg-ups... We have to keep working and get better. That's it, nothing else.....

'Cause if we don't beat ourselves, we win. Unless or until we get outplayed or outcoached....

Now argue with that if ya wanna, but that's all it is......

99,

that just doesn't wash with alot of folks...I'll tell you why.

Bell had an entire off-season do decide how he was going to go about implementing his brand of football to those kids...I don't care how many faults Hughes had, that man left thed cupboard full of offensive talent to utilize...

coach Coe was faced with the same situation a month or two ago when our admin was doing the witch hunt thing with LC...The sad thing is that he had less time to evaluate the talent that he had left than Bell did.

He evaluated the talent we had coming back this season and determined that it would be best to leave the HOBO in place, so he could work on other things (i.e. special teams, Defense, Conditioning, etc...)

He took it upon himself to learn the offense in place as opposed to ripping everything out and starting over before the beginning of the season. He trusted the kids and the staff in our program to help in that process and it's immediately paying dividends...

You see the complete opposite of that where it pertains to Bell... :smh:

Coe had no choice but to run Cole's offense, he was brought in during fall practice. And your players, while not as talented, were better coached and prepared under the Coles than ours were under Assberry. No one can argue this. So Coe really just had to make a few minor adjustments. Finally, Cole wasn't suspended because he can't coach, so it made sense for Coe to just manage what was already there.

We have offensive skill players, but no Offensive line. These guys are big, slow and weak. And I don't care who you have at the skill positions, if you can't block, you can't do anything. If you wanna blame Bell for something, blame him for the OL coach(his hire) not doing his job.

It takes more than 1 offseason to change 4 years of bad habits. With the exception of a few 5th year seniors, these players have only studied under Hughes. Whatever bad tendencies he had as a coach, they'll have as players. And if those bad tendencies included laziness, lack of preparation, and an unwillingness to work on weaknesses, then this will be a problem for the players as well. Bell may indeed be the worse coach ever. But what's happening NOW isn't on him.

I would argue that, but ASU, Coe, and Cole aint the purpose of this thread!

kool-aid,
someone asked earlier, I'll ask again

at what point does Bell start being held accountable for this team?

and if you start winning, would the credit go to Hughes, instead of Bell

I think people here are failing to acknowledge the basic cause of JSU's problems: the players do not believe in Bell and have given up on him.

I know that is hard to stomach, but I sincerely believe it is the truth. The same thing happened last year when Bell was at Chavez. His players all hated him and it showed in their performances week in and week out.

I don't know what it is about Bell, but he must have a knack for pissing people off.

I don't know the answer to that. At what point did Tressel get credit for winning with John Cooper's players? Or Bob Stoops with John Blake's? Even a great coach like Ty Willingham had to share some credit with Bob Davie because of the defense he inherited. Now that he's lost some of those players, he's about to hit a few rough spots as well. The truth is the man in charge(even in his first year) will get the credit or catch the hell for whatever is happening under his watch. That's the nature of the beast, and I'm sure Bell inderstands that. But in reality its a much more complex situation. It always takes the coach a while to put his personal stamp on a program. And during that transition, sometimes you have to go backwards(quoting here) before you start to see progress. That's what's happening here.

I could swallow that if thes same kids weren't pass-blocking there collective arses off in the previous 3 seasons under Hughes... :smh:

Ole' boy completely scrapped the number one scoring offense in 1-AA in favor of a "running" attack when he knew he didn't have the line, nor the backs, to support that offensive philosophy...I'm sorry, but Hughes isn't responsible for that...How is it that JSU fans can have that much insight into the strengths of their players and the coach brought in to maximize that talent cant see what he has in the cupbord himself??? :smh:

if you have kids on the line that are used to pass-blocking, you structure the offensive schemes around that fact. If you know you have untested backs, you use the passing game you have to set up the running game...It doesn't take an entire off-season to do that. He could've been working on fundementals and special teams the entire off-season. From what I've seen this season, it looked like the didn't work on those things at all

I wouldn't say that the players have given up on him ....................But I will say that he could have done a lot better with the players he inherited. He came in and tried to change way to much with this team too soon. He comes across as the smuggest MF I have ever seen.

To come in and not even try to establish anything with the fans is the quickest way to turn the home team, Jackson, into your enemy. The stubborness, the "That's the way it is, so get used to it", will never work here. That's the one moment I can really say the tide really turned against him here in Jackson when he made comments like that. People had "accepted" how he got the job, and was like ---- He's the coach now, so let's roll with him. The more day's that went by, the more people he pissed off.

A hard nosed coach is one thing, but a SMUG HARD HEAD IS ANOTHER.
