Alabama A&M enjoyed a fantastic season a year ago, winning the Southwestern Athletic Conference regular season and tournament championships and going to the NCAA Tournament for the first time.
The Bulldogs were expecting more of the same this season with most of the key players returning, including SWAC player of the year Obie Trotter, SWAC freshman of the year Marcus Jones and SWAC newcomer of the year runner-up Joseph Martin, along with the arrival of highly touted junior college recruit Michael Ford.
The script, at least thus far, hasn't played out as most expected, though.
Vann Pettaway's team, the preseason favorite, enters Saturday's game against Prairie View 5-8 overall and 3-4 in the SWAC. The Bulldogs are tied for sixth place and have already nearly lost as many league games (4) as they did all last season (6).
After a 3-1 start in league play, Alabama A&M has dropped three straight road games, including Monday's 77-74 loss at Alcorn State.
The problem?
"The breaks we were getting last year we're not getting this year," Pettaway said. :shame: :shame: "We have really hurt ourselves because we have had leads late and we've found ways to self-destruct, from not executing on the offensive end to blowing assignments on the defensive end. We're one or two plays away." :shame: :shame:
Trotter and Martin, for the most part, have played up to expectations. Trotter, a senior guard, is averaging 16.8 points and leads the team in assists and steals. Martin, a senior swingman, is averaging 16.7 points and a team-leading 9.8 rebounds per game.
Meanwhile, Ford (11.8 ppg) and Jones (6.3 ppg) have been plagued by inconsistency. :shame:
Alabama A&M's main problem has been the lack of production from its inside players. The quartet of Chris Collins, Mickell Gladness, Kevin Smith and Norris Arnold are averaging a combined 10.3 points per game.
And the Bulldogs, traditionally a strong rebounding team, are routinely getting whipped :smash: on the boards. During their current three-game skid, they've been out-rebounded by a combined 34 boards.
"Everybody knows that's our weakness," Pettaway said. :goof: "We've got to find a way to get more out of those guys."
