dam i dont march for FAMU but i find the hating on here out of control. for buddy from JSU saying FAMU's marches will be sloppy..get real. even when they had 400 they still had the cleanest sounding marches out of any HBCU band. honestly, if you dont march for FAMU you cant even talk about marches. they have those on lock

FAMU doesnt have to borrow marchers from ANYBODY. they have one of the largest student populations out of HBCUS. and there wont be any horn holders..all of those kids audition before getting on the field. they weed out the bad ones early so dont worry about that.

if yall spent less time worrying about FAMU than maybe some of yall would have the history and fame that they have

There will ALWAYS be horn-holders buddy. Irrefutable fact. Plus, my brother (Who marched at FAMU and was assistant trombone section leader) will personally tell you that there ARE horn holders there. Hell, even back when SU was smaller, i.e. 2004, there was horn holders there. Hard to believe because of the MASSIVE sound coming from such a small group, but there were. Hell, out of 11 freshmen trombones in 2004, 2 of us were GOOD TROMBONISTS, maybe 5 were decent, and the rest were SAD. Horn holders are EVERYWHERE, and it is only innevitable that there will be a higher number in a bigger ensemble.

Most of the musicians in the 100 were first chair coming out of high school.

Florida A&M Band High Steps For Historical Event : NPR
Jan 19, 2009 ... Nearly three-quarters of the band members played first chair in their high school orchestras. But on the field, they're known as much for ...

Dude, unless Dr. White called and asked all the BD's, EVERYONE was 1st chair in high school. Anyway, that is not much of a feat at SOME schools anyway. Doesn't take much to be the best of the worst, which is what we (College bands) are getting. Before it gets misconstrued, I am NOT a FAMU hater... They WAS my first choice, until people were long-distance hazing me from Tallahasee (Callin' my job and askin me "history questions".... Ninjas are SILLY, huh?!). Just wanted to dispell the myth.

Not being a musician, for US, I can see it in the size of the music book we can pull out on folks. I have seen those guys go on and on with different songs near the beginning of a season when other folks run out of ammo. Not a knock on other bands, but I rarely see others with as much musical versatility.

You are clearly talking about everyone else except SU and TnSU

Nope. I have seen us with those two bands in particular multiple times.

And you are a lie if you say your band ran either two of those bands out of their book...

I remember in 98 when FAMU ran JSU out of their book...but also remember when JSU was more equipped SU ran JSU down to scales....

I wish people would STOP putting TnState and Book in the same sentence year after year. TN State has played the same exact songs the last 6 years against AAMU. To me a book is DIFFERENT songs you play from year to year.... not playing the same shit (Master Blaster, Word Up, Bond Opener etc..)

I'm sure they add new songs on top of what ever that list of standards they play.... Regardless the freshman class have to learn every song every year...
You may be able to critique the book by saying they always play this or that.. but if it all sound good, they can run you out of your book it yours isn't as big. It's a cheap way of doing it though... But none the less it's still a huge book.

Hell in that case EVERY HBCU BAND has a large book.... but also its impossible for somebody OUSTIDE of another school to say if someones book is big or small. You dont have the long 5th quarters like you use to, to even tell. You can only go by word of someone who marches in one of those bands. I already know how a Tn State 5th quarter is going to go..

A book of songs, READY to be fired off at a moments notice. I know by the end of our 3weeks of camp in 2004, there was at LEAST 40-50 songs on the dry-erase board.....

You can hear when a band has a book or not... Most people follow SU for example.... Each game during the game or during the 5th you will hear something differernt.. there are many other schools where if you were to follow them each week and nothing different being played which is an easy tell tell..
Then I know is SU case in recent years.. it would be that one game where the unload about 20 (after the game)... Not many bands can do that with out repeating over 90% of what was played during the game or halftime... There a re a few other bands that can do that, not many though..

And it's very hard to make a claim of having a LARGE book, when you don't have a hired STAFF arranger.. and it's obvious what bands have a large book when atleast 2 or 3 directors on staff arranges...

Cheap??!! You have got to be kidding.

The bottom line is this: It is the night before the opening game and we are in a sectional. I call your name and any song in the book and count it off. Can you play it from memory solo? If yes, you can stay. If not, go to the practice room and start getting ready for next week because you will not be playing with us in the opener.

Dacon,

You just proved my point... It's a cheap way of doing it because; the only people that would suffer that consequence "should" be freshman... I would hope all upperclassmen know music from a year ago...

So, you are saying the size of the book doesn't matter, only execution? I can agree.... But, no matter how good it sounds, nobody wants to hear 10 songs repetitively.

Weekly 100 Notes:

- Members do not forget to sign up for Pep Band. Each band member must participate. We have 10 home basketball games and we will have 10 Pep Bands (50 members each). So you will only have to perform at one game.

- Please remember to PAY ATTENTION to your travel itineraries. ESPECIALLY when we make stops. On our last trip we left 39 people at Ryan's. Over the past season we left a total of 4,229 people different places. It is impossible for us to call roll and check for all of you, so PLEASE be mindful of all reporting times.

- If you have not learned all of the field show music... don't sweat it. There are 500 of us. Come on.

- Remember there is NO REASON a person on Bus 1 should leave anything at FAMU when we take road trips. If you are on Bus 1 and discover you have left something... just call someone on bus 23 and they can stop and get it before they pull off.
OMG!!!!! LMAO!!!!!:clap::clap::clap:

LMAO @ NT

and Dahill please do not argue against the Band Historian! lol He knows everything about A&M/JSU/FAMU and everybody else's band program (internal and external)

Having a large book means nothing. You do need a nice amount of songs to choose from to please the crowd but if you sound sh!tty playing them what's the point?

Why are you trying so badly to get "my" attention?

Is this considered "Stalking"?....:retard:

And Dahill and I aren't arguing... He stated his opinion on TnSU and I stated mine on TnSU.

Your problem is, you follow dance teams too much (not checking out how fine they are, but checking out who is hitting the right steps and isht like that) to even hold any type of conversation about Band.

Shouldn't you be in some costume shop looking for patterns and isht like that?

Since you want to talk band danceguy..

How many staffed arrangers do JSU have? I don't know, you should since you went to JSU and know band...

And don't lie, I know when dancer dudes are lying...
