Jamaica?s Bolt breaks 200 mark, gets sprint double

BEIJING (AP)?Usain Bolt of Jamaica broke the world record by winning the 200 meters in 19.30 seconds Wednesday night, becoming the first man since Carl Lewis in 1984 to sweep the 100 and 200 gold medals at an Olympics.

Bolt is the first man ever to break the world marks in both sprints at an Olympics. Not even Lewis or Jesse Owens managed that.

Showing what he can do when he runs at full speed all the way through the finish?something he hadn?t done yet in the Beijing Games?Bolt eclipsed the old record of 19.32 seconds set by Michael Johnson in Atlanta in 1996.

Bolt was an astonishing 0.52 seconds ahead of Churandy Martina of Netherlands Antilles, who was second across the finish line but later was disqualified after a U.S. team protest that he had run out of his lane. The third man across the line, Wallace Spearmon of the United States, also was disqualified for leaving his lane.

Those rulings meant Shawn Crawford of the United States, the defending Olympic champion, wound up with the silver medal, and another American, Walter Dix, ended up with the bronze medal despite being the fifth man across the finish line.

The performance marked Bolt as one of the breakthrough stars of these Summer Games, coming on the heels of his victory in the 100 Saturday night. He bettered his own world record in that race by winning in 9.69 seconds?despite slowing down over the final 20 meters to showboat.

"Come here DCG, I wanna show you what I do with my snout"

How do you all feel about people getting disqualified and the medals given to others?
I would rather earn the medal than to receive it by default. In the back of my mind I would still be thinking, on this day, my opponent was still better than me. Of course I can say that cause I haven't seen the race and I don't know if the sprinters that veered outside of their lanes gained a significant advantage. If they did, then yes I would accept it.

I wanna' do something bad to this woman right hur VVVVVVVVVVVVVVVV

Is Usain Bolt even human.........

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/olympics/beijing/track/2008-08-20-mens-200m_N.htm

BEIJING ? Usain Bolt electrified the Olympics again.
Bolt made Olympic history Wednesday night by winning the 200 meters in 19.30 seconds, lowering Michael Johnson's world record of 19.32 set at the 1996 Games in Atlanta. Coupled with his victory in the 100 meters in 9.69 Saturday, Bolt is the first man to win both events in the same Olympics while establishing world records.

He had the lead by the time the eight-man field hit the turn and finished .52 seconds ahead of Churandy Martina of Netherlands Antilles (19.82) ? who crossed the line second but was subsequently disqualified ? in a race usually decided by hundredths of a second. Defending Olympic champion Shawn Crawford of the USA (19.96) moved up to second, meaning Bolt's official margin of victory, .66 seconds, is the largest ever for an Olympic 200.

Nobody other than Johnson had ever run a 200 in under 19.6, and nobody had broken 9.7 in the 100 before Beijing.

I JUST WANT TO :vomit:

Baton fumbles cost both USA 4x100 relay teams in opening round

BEIJING ? The U.S. men and women both dropped the baton in the Olympic 400-meter relays Thursday night and failed to advance out of the first round.

First, men's anchor Tyson Gay, part of the American team that won the relay at last year's world championships, did not get the red metal stick from third-leg runner Darvis Patton.

Then, about 25 minutes later, women's anchor Lauryn Williams flubbed her exchange with Torri Edwards, their baton dropping to the ground, too. At the 2004 Olympics, Williams started running too early and missed a handoff from Marion Jones in the final.

"If people want to assess the blame to me, that's OK. I mean, I can take whatever it is that people are going to dish out," Williams said. "We had good chemistry. The hand was back there. She was there. I don't know what happened."

Unlike the men, who stopped racing, Williams scrambled back on the wet track to pick up the baton and finish the lap. The United States, of course, was the last of eight teams in the heat to finish, in a time of 48.95 seconds. Belgium finished first in 42.92.
