SWAC School's Slice of NCAA Tournament Pie


Attendance is an issue, and since it is and will vary wildly depending on match ups and who's playing, it can not be a consideration when determining where to host the tournament. Instead, the focus should be on making sure the best team has the best chance of making it to the tourney. The regular season champion should host the tournament. They earned that right. If they get beat early and their fans don't show, well, we weren't using attendance as a motivator for where the tournament was held anyway. If they win and make it to the championship game, well, the conference benefits from their success with a potentially larger crowd.

I do not think the conference champ should host. Tournament games should be on a neutral court.

Ummm I was being sarcastic in that statement BUT the loss of that cash outlay is a major reason for the results we are in now..Now if you dont believe that, then there really is something wrong with you.

There is nothing much there. I check it annually lol. Not many details on where the bulk of the revenue comes from.

Why exaggerate? So what is the actual figure, if you know? Nevermind, it's probably in the 990.

The SWAC operates on like a $6-7M budget. Unless you're saying the $500k covers SWAC office salaries only. That might be close (probably still short a couple hundred thousand)

The money that the conference was no longer able to receive has caused the SWAC to have to adjust their budget while also not replacing the $500k a year. Now I have prepared 990's and there is always a way to play with numbers if you want to. But at the end of the day these are what we do know - The SWAC has missed over $2.5 Million from The City of Birmingham since moving the SCG, for at least the past 2 years the schools have not received any kind of payout from the Conference office - this is what raised eyebrows at Duer - the response to the schools was the Conference didnt have any money they were able to rebate back to the schools because the conference lost money - and again Duer blamed it on the SCG. However you cut it - if your budget has been dependent on a certain amount of money, and you lose that money - you dont replace it - and yet you still try to operate as if you had the same money - you gonna find a huge hole in your budget. That $500k allowed the Conference the flexibility to do some other things with funding and how they utilized their budget...they never made an adjustment.

They "missed" $2.5M but the revenue went up significantly higher over that same period according to the 990s. Check the 990s annually from pre-move to post move.

Dude - are you even looking at the bottom line? Lemme help you out - its in RED right under the Revenues you spoke of. The RED coincides with the time frame in which they have been gone. And for 2016 the net income is -$1,286,727 in case you wanted to know. I mean really - what good is it if the SCG football revenue increased if that event help to enable the entire conference going negative? No one has to look at that - you look at the overall bottom line.

Not a bad idea in an effort to,get the conference back on its feet financially! The problem is that some conference institutions are located in rural areas far away from supporting facilities and amenities needed to host such an event.

That's true. What that really means though is the conference support staff will actually have to work to cultivate local ties so that if the tourney is @ Valley, Greenwood and surrounding areas are ready to make the money we are going to bring. There is nothing going on in southwest mississippi in March so that won't help attendance if it's at Alcorn, but holding it in houston or birmingham didn't make a noticable difference either. It's definitely no frills, but financially it makes sense.

The problem is if you're hosting a full basketball tourney in Itta Bena or Lorman where do the 14-18 teams (men's and women's) stay with only a few days/weeks notice to book? What about when you have one school's men's team as #1, and another school's women's team #1? Do you only play at the home of the men's #1 seed or do you separate? Do you really save much money having it in one of those places vs Houston (or BR or Jackson)?

You mean like the overwhelming success it has been in Houston and all the money yall have brought to them?

The way the tournament has looked the past few years (even with the local team in the finals) in Houston you would think it was being held in Lorman.

The combination of Greenwood (5 minutes), Indianola (< 20 minutes), Winona (< 30 minutes) and Grenada (< 30 minutes) can more than handle the SWAC basketball tourney at this point because the fan interest isn't there in Houston so what makes everyone thinks that a game can barely half fill a gym in Houston (with there being "so much to do") would be too much for Leflore County

You probably meant to quote me on this. LOL

I'm not speaking of attendance, just logistics. Each team (7-9 womens and 7-9 mens) would need probably 10 or so rooms at the last minute, and that's ONLY counting players and coaches.
 
Help me out here folks! Exactly how does it benefit our schools, financially, to have the SWAC tournament? How do our schools benefit, financially, by sending the winner to the NCAA tournament? Why have the damn conference tournament at all? Crown a regular season champion and be done until we change the damn bylaws, because until that happens, we're just throwing money away we don't have and feeding the so-called reason for the very existence of the bylaw. Hopefully, that change comes before next fall.

The Ivy League use do this exact same thing until recently. The difference between them and us though is money.
