I hope they do some soon this year was just dumbRemember, this is not a NCAA sanctioned playoff. They would have to get with the Bowls & ESPN and see who would want to host those 4 early games (1st round) and negotiate another TV deal. It may come in a few more years where they give the P5 conferences a automatic bid with 3 At Large teams. Those 3 teams will be from the remaining conferences and those P5 teams that don't get the automatic bid.

In this scenario the highest ranked G5 teams are Western Michigan, Navy, and S. Florida. Leaving out Ohio State and Michigan among others. The only part I don't agree with is giving another P5 school a chance to be in the final 8. Just allow the remaining 3 spots for the remaining G5 conferences. The last 3 spots should go to those the three highest ranked teams...period.
The problem with all of this is that a selection committee is involved. The rule should be simple. So that the P5 conferences are all represented, the winner of the each conference championship game gets an automatic spot. The same would apply for the G5 school. To be considered, the school has to win its conference championship.
It doesn't have to be complicated.

Louisville is in the ACC. P5 now.But the playoff system they have set is to get the top 4 teams in a playoff regardless of conference. If you go to 8 you should still be doing that. Right now the highest ranked G5 school is Louisville at #11

That would be correct. Neither OSU or Michigan are playing for conference titles, therefore they don't get to play for a national championship. W. Mich, Navy and USF would be the 6th, 7th and 8th seeds. And as difficult as it might seem be, I honesty believe that any of those school on any given Saturday could pull an upset over one of the P5 representatives. That makes for great drama and possible "Cinderalla stories".
Louisville is in the ACC. P5 now.
@KennRashad
Let's say the P5 champions are
1. Alabama (SEC)
2. Clemson (ACC)
3. Washington (Pac 12)
4. Wisconsin/Penn State winner (Big 10)
5. Oklahoma (Big 12)
———
Your three highest G5 champs would be
6. Western Michigan (MAC)
7. Navy (American)
8. San Diego State (Mountain West)???
I can still see the human element used for seeding ... but
1-Alabama vs. 8-San Diego State
4-Big 10 winner vs. 5-Oklahoma
3-Washginton vs. 6-Western Michigan
2-Clemson vs. 7-Navy
And that is the problem with the current system, especially when dealing with committees. Committees (regardless of how fair they claim they try to be) are still subjective. Just let the teams play it out on the field. Take the committees out of the equation. But the playoff system they have set is to get the top 4 teams in a playoff regardless of conference. S. Florida beat Navy. They lost the tiebreaker to Temple for their division.South Florida is in the American with Navy, and Navy won 52-45 on Oct. 28 in Tampa.
So that third G5 team just might be San Diego State out of the Mountain West

Exactly! The human element would only be needed for seeding. And much of that is already done during the course of the season with polls and RPI rankings and whatnot.
Then what the hell is the purpose of having conference championships? Just because things are they way they are doesn't mean thats the way it should be.But those are not the TOP 8 teams in the country and that's what it's all about.
So the 1-3 seeds are basically given byes? LOL It would make zero sense for SDSU to play Alabama.
If... check that... WHEN they expand to 8 teams, this makes it easier for a Western Michigan who has a great season (UNDEFEATED with a good shot at 13-0) to get in with an at-large. The highest ranked P5 school now gets in one of the Group of 6 bowl games so expanding it to 8 appeases the G5 schools for a while knowing they have a bid. I would LOVE to see Navy get a shot at Alabama (because Navy still could be the highest ranked G5 school) in a #1 versus #8 match up because that option would give Bama fits.
The other P5 schools would probably be Michigan and Ohio State this year so an 8 team playoff this year would kind of tidy up this playoff picture instead of dissing Penn State (who beat OSU) in the "but what if they played Ohio State now" scenario.
(Assuming champs using last week's ranking)
1. Alabama vs (8) Navy/Western Michigan (stud receiver)/SDSU
2. Penn State/Wisconsin vs (7) Michigan
3. Clemson vs (6) Oklahoma/Oklahoma State
4. Washington vs (5) Ohio State
The top 4 seeds host games (to reward conference champs).
No I am saying it is effectively a bye because the games would not be competitive. Alabama would be up 30 by halftime. The only team that might keep it close for a half is WMU.Let's say with go P5 champs and the three top G5 champs in an 8-team tourney. No byes would be needed.
And like Kenn said earlier, the human element would only be needed for seeding.
First two weeks would be played on campuses ... Opening week home field advantage goes to higher-seeded team. Quarterfinal round home field goes to higher-seeded team, unless the lower-seeded team from last week won.
We also have to incentivize being the top two seeds, so give No. 1 and No. 2 seed home field throughout those first two rounds.
Then the semis and the championship game would follow the current format.
1-Alabama vs. 8-San Diego State
4-Wisconsin vs. 5-Oklahoma
3-Washginton vs. 6-Western Michigan
2-Clemson vs. 7-Navy
Quarterfinal round (I'm just spitballing scenarios, no really picking wh
5-Oklahoma at 1-Alabama
3-Washington at 7-Navy
