Grambling State Paid $575,000 for the Arizona Game

But why do "cheerleaders" have their own chartered bus? :( smh PV could save a LOT of money by not having "cheerleaders" ala sideline dancers. smh

Actually GSU's cheerleaders go to cheer leading competitions throughout the year in order to curtail cost. People wonder why we have so many is because of the competitions.

2012

2013

2014

For the 40 minute ride to Auburn, "Alabama State will be receiving a $515,000 payout for playing in the game, which is nearly what it reportedly spent on football scholarships ($565,820) in its 2013-14 operating budget. ASU will also have the opportunity to have its marching band, The Mighty Marching Hornets, perform at Jordan-Hare Stadium for the first time. Auburn will provide 500 complimentary tickets for ASU along with holding 400 band complimentary tickets"

The internet ADs can knock these games if they wanna, but in the real world, $$$$ talks.
Bama State also has a 45 minute drive down HW 231 to face the Troy Trojans. That payout is a little over 300k.
Athletics Departments have to be smart. Go get the easy money in close proximity. Minimize travel expenses, maximize fan support and the FBS schools win also because we will help pack the stadium. Troy's largest attendance on record is when they played ASU years back. They know the numbers also.

I know JSU received $600,000 from unlv but I wonder what was the net income. I would assume around $300-350,000, MAYBE $400,000.

Man this is disgusting smh..

Ppl getting "happy" over a pay day from the white man

Man look smh

We gotta do better, It's embarrassing

Sad isn't it...and you know what's worse: if a MEAC team or TN State was on the schedule to come visit us, we wouldn't even fill up our own home stadiums. They go to these damn FBS games more than say SU vs. FAMU, Alcorn vs. Howard.

What they don't realize BigHead is that these FBS Schools have gotten smart. They make you buy a ticket from THEIR website. When Alcorn played Georgia Tech and I saw where you had to actually go to GT's Website to purchase a Ticket AND Parking pass, I said Hell No. They bragging about these damn paychecks.

If Howard were to come visit Alcorn in Lorman, it is not Howard's responsibility to fill up Alcorn's Home Stadium. If FAMU were to visit SU in Mumford, it is not FAMU's responsibility to fill up SU's Home Stadium.

We are not getting happy off the white man but happy about the structure of a contract.

What do you propose?

You can also demand that your Athletic Departmemt only schedule D2 HBCUs with name recognition. If your not happy with Virginia Lynchburg....call up Tuskegee or Virginia State.

Also, we the SWAC must rekindle OOC HBCU rivalries. I've noticed on the board a lot of Grambling fans are interested in restarting their rivalry with TN State. TN State has the John Merritt Classic. With all due respect to UAPB, I don't understand how Grambling and TN State couldn't have made it happen. Make it happen 2017.

You all don't realize this but these FBS schools are stealing the HBCU culture.

This so true and has been since we were all 1AA(78)

PV got all that money to get their ass embarrassed on national TV. This shit does nothing good for our programs. Our programs get dogged out and kids see the 70-0 scores and they automatically get it in their head they dont want to go to HBCUs.

but hey its all good cause Massa gave us a big ol fat check. We'll gladly take that but we cant fill up our stadiums, arenas and fields and dont give anything back to the schools.

Grambling St put up 70 on us last fall & the year prior, Alcorn St scored 77. Obviously we are not embarrassed. We played a game. We lost. There is no W-L-embarrassed column lol. We move forward.

But since you are concerned and have actions behind your lip service, you can make your $$$ donation to help support our athl dept @ PVAMU, Dept of Athls, Prairie View A&M University, Prairie View, TX 77446.

Don't talk about it; be about it. And thank you in advance for your financial donation and not your empty words. Like you, we are not a bunch of dumb fickle graduates who do not support our programSSSS plural. Since we cannot fill up our stadium to help cover operating costs, we have to structure contracts so that we recv a level payday, like everyone else - the fcs rate.

No shots at you brotha man, I just feel we have to go in another direction.

The heads at these institutions have to come and form some ideas. We can't keep doing this method, hell we will be doing this until our grandkids kids enroll at our schools.

I can't purpose anything without looking at the books/budget, but those that can see the books should at least try and come up with alternate ways.
That day will come when these schools stop playing us, then what??? so why not before that day comes, we break-away, establish a plan so that we don't have to put these games on our schedule.

This can't be the way, and that includes SU.

Nothing is gained from playing these schools, these matchups does nothing for the players nor the university

Dude, they laugh at your post (I do as well, I be rollings Lol) but some things I agree with you.

This is disgusting, and we are keeping this cycle going, instead of trying to break this method.

Like I said, to me, these games does nothing to help our program or player development. Our coaches don't even benefit from these games Lol..which is sad..

I'd rather see a scrimmage against the 1's and 2's than go to buy a ticket to see us get 50 to 60 hung on us.

We get 600k and 700k, and we get happy and excited..like I said "all money aint good money" man you have to rely on white daddy, it's time for us to think, which I see our heads are not doing, to find other ways to bring in revenue. This is not the way.

Not a single one of the should've, would've, ought to, and any other pie in the sky schemes will pay a bill. But the $400K to be cleared from a single game most certainly will.

Again, it's soooooooo easy for these "internet ADs" to turn down real dollars in the name of it's from "da white man".

smh

Man go somewhere with that breh,

Keep tap dancing breh.

Shine them shoes pretty for the white man.

Ppl are so comfortable, they don't even wanna 'think' of ways to try and get from up under the hand Lol.

And that's the mindset of these 'older' cats in these AD position. no vision azz goofies. get some young blood in position, these older goofies are all about a hand-out

No shots at you either good brother. This is a mature conversation. So let's keep it there.

Now

So you are admitting that you do not have adequate knowledge of each institution's fiscal affairs to make a decision as to how or why we should not play these so called "money games".

On the contrary these games do something for the schools because GSU has not had a home game to sell out in YEARS thus the $575,000 assist greatly because our athletic department is in the red. Furthermore, given the manner in which Louisiana's former Governor cut higher education by at least 50% that is a greater problem. Moreover, there are HBCUs whose annual budget match a PWC's sole athletic budget.

As a young man who worked for a legislator for 5 years while in undergrad and grad school who represented GSU. I witnessed how there were incompetent persons employed at GSU who did not make logical decisions based upon numbers. Sadly many of these individuals are still employed at GSU and some have become directors or in leadership positions. College is a business above anything else and the business is educating people. Yet, that cannot be done without money. Something I think you fully understand.

We can all sit back and examine how things should be done but until we are sitting at that table at the university to see the true numbers we are all speculating.

I cannot and will not speak for all HBCUs but I know for a fact GSU is in bad fiscal shape. On the bright side we have a president now who is pushing to fix it and dedicated. More importantly he doesn't need the job as president.

I tell people if you want to make a change in higher education quit your current job and apply for a job at a HBCU.

I admit that I don't know anyone fiscal affairs but I will admit that I do know business 101.

It's a numbers game.

Again it's hard for me to go into full detail on how would I cut off the white hand, but playing these games "every" year will be cut off eventually if I became AD. It's as if we are looking for these games because we have become set on this method is what I am saying. How and what would make me say this...Well we are scheduling these type of games ahead (2018) and we are in year 2016, that means we are not thinking of ways to try and not play these games.
All this does is make the board/AD or whoever that's pulling the trigger on these games, "lazy". Dude you have 2 years to try and come up ways to pump out 500,000, you mean to tell me a program like SU can't pull in 500k within 2 years? No one can come up with ideas or other 'money games' to produce 500k, even it the idea or game will garnish 200k, you still winning, but again, it's all about "wanting" to get from under the hand/stop playing these games.

So I ask you founder or anybody who are all about accepting these checks, What will happen when these schools stop asking us to play them and them 500k checks stop rolling in?

Then what we do?

Why wait until this happen, why not, right now, try and find ways now to adjust our programs so that we can already be ready for when this day does happen? and it will

Do you really think these schools need to play us?

Let's go with the notion that these racist ass schools don't play us and there are no more "money games"?

Now what we do boss man?

Are we now mad that these 500k-800k checks have stopped, we fold and make excuses huh and say no more football?...

What we do ladies and gentlemen?

Let's live in this world for a minute

We get 600k and 700k, and we get happy and excited..like I said "all money aint good money" man you have to rely on white daddy, it's time for us to think, which I see our heads are not doing, to find other ways to bring in revenue. This is not the way.

And all money ain't bad money either. So what's the point?

Look, I understand the need to be socially conscious. I get it. But I think some of us just say shit, trying to be profound in the process, when in actuality nothing is being said at all. I have nothing against our schools coming up with alternatives methods to produce revenue, but it is FOOLISH to think that a $600K or $700K payday for playing a football game is bad money.

And contrary to what some of you think, the players (and even some coaches), actually look forward to playing these games. Gary Harrell confirmed that much yesterday.

There are a couple of things that folks need to remember. The SWAC and MEAC both are FCS conferences. And while it is easy to take the "whoa is us" route in creating an overblown narrative about HBCUs and money games, the SWAC and MEAC are not the only conferences playing money games. Baylor dropped 55 points on Northwestern State, Oklahoma State dropped 61 on SLU, Texas Tech dropped 69 on SFA and the list goes on.

It's way too easy for alumni and supporters of various schools to say what athletic administrators should be doing, when there are a number facts and figures that show its the alumni and supporters of these schools who aren't doing shit to give back.

A word to all HBCU ADs: Keep playing those money games if the opportunity presents itself, dammit!

1. How many alumni and supporters do you know give back to SU? (I'll wait) So those schools like Northwestern State, what if I told you, that their alumni don't give back as well, Would you believe me? Of course not because to me, based off your previous post you make a statement/an opinion about alumni and supporters at HBCU schools that don't give without knowing if they do or don't. All those other schools you've name SFA, SLU their alumni give back huh? if so, why do they play those games then?

2. I couldn't care less what those other schools are doing, "we" HBCUs should want to do better instead of following others, again I ask YOU, what will happened when these schools stop p(l)aying us to play them??? They day will eventually come, and then what?????

3. These kids look forward playing against these schools...Kool, good for them, no harm, again, when watching these games, the game is so green, you can call plays. Nothing is shown, the team that they are playing only stick to 9-15 plays when playing against us. Our coaches don't gain anything, if they do, it doesn't show in the season after these games, the players don't gain anything, if they do, it doesn't show in the season. The school rep is not even an entice to recruit, I would say GSU made a statement this past weekend and SU last year with UGA. A high school SR QB seeing PV get blasted or SU this past weekend, that's not nothing enticing about seeing these schools getting 50-60 hung on them..like I said, these games do nothing to entice players to come to the university.
You only get one or maybe 2 competitive series and after that it's lights out for the most part
One half is played, hell most of the times it's One QUARTER that is worth watching. So why are you and others sitting up here trying to make these "money games" more than what they are.

4. This has nothing about being socially conscious, it's about being independent. You get it, but the ladder part of your post contradicts what you get?

I can't wait for the day them checks stop rolling in, Then what? Lol.

1. How many alumni and supporters do you know give back to SU? Not enough. More SU fans show up at games at home and on the road but won't write a check to support any program on the campus!!!! (I'll wait) So those schools like Northwestern State, what if I told you, that their alumni don't give back as well, Would you believe me? Of course not because to me, based off your previous post you make a statement/an opinion about alumni and supporters at HBCU schools that don't give without knowing if they do or don't. If all the schools gave back, then their may not be "money games"....in football and basketball.

2. I couldn't care less what those other schools are doing, "we" HBCUs should want to do better instead of following others, again I ask YOU, what will happened when these schools stop p(l)aying us to play them??? They day will eventually come, and then what?????
What do you suggest we do???

It's difficult to go back to playing classics with mandated schedules and sponsors fading. Plus, the attendance even at top leader schools SU and J-State have declined.

Like you don't know o_O

Who would they share a bus with? Think about it....;)
Personally, I think they are a waste of resources and should not be on the sideline. We had a situation at PV regarding "cheerleading" that left a bad taste in my mouth. A totally preventable accident if it were not for "cheerleading."
