THEESwacProphet

THEE SWACs Neighborhood Prophet
it's about that time swac fans.... August is upon us, and that means football season and what we all care about band camps are in full swing this month in preparation for the season. I have some inside insight to preview about numbers that swac bands will have and reasons why they will be that size to back it below. I will post videos of performances from all groups going into the season in this month to build excitement. Also feel free to add your insight on possible size if anything changes. Bring your smack and bring the excitement. It's a new year in the swac. Who will be the best this year, the under dog, the shocker, or a bust ????...

Alright . First up.

Alabama state

Not to sure the exact number, but after last years late rally verses talladega, which proved to be impressive in favor of state I'm expecting Alabama to be in the 180 - 220 range. This band was small for its standards in the 2k15 season, and I've heard heavy recruiting has went in for this fall to beef them back up. Expect an increase.

Size: 200-230 (increased from last year)

Next Aamu

This band had a solid year and directors are looking to add to what they had last year but not by much. Aamu hasn't traditionally been a group dependent on numbers , but expect them to be in the 165 -180 range. Sources say they've locked up a good number of freshman to replace the senior class that left , but will remain around same size or have a slight increase from last year depending on how band camp goes. Not a noticeable change , but they will be strong for that size and will be fine, as they push to establish the Aamu brand of sound under the new regime.

Size : 165 - 185 range (slight increase from last years band)

Alcorn

Expect a decrease from last years group. Dr. Murray has gone on record and said Alcorn didn't have a great recruiting season to build on numbers as they had wanted , but that they will be fine. Group was in the top 3 for me in swac bands last year with pv in the 4th spot, but expect a decreased number of (125-150) members in the group this year.

Numbers 125-150 (decrease from last years group)

Grambling

Grambling really balanced out and had a great showing at bayou to raise talk in fans that hasn't been there in previous battle of the bands. Expect this group to stay around the same size. Directors trying to stay away from big numbers and provide quality sound this upcoming year and budget cuts in the state are hindering this group from going over 200 , so expect them in the 150-180 range.

Numbers: 150-180 (bout the same size possibly a little more)

Jackson state

This group is by far financially equipped to maintain a 350 member band and will be in the 320 range this upcoming season. They showed out at honda, and kept recruiting efforts up with auditions in Chicago, Detroit, Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, and southeast Texas. Adjustments are being made to accommodate a competitive number on the field , but hopefully they will be consistent, and rumor is the trumpets have matured from last years freshman plagued group so expect jsu to still be the biggest essemble in the swac. Please note jsu will not travel 320 for away games and in the first 3 games will travel in the 200s for budget restrictions they'll have and space.

Size: 320 (about same size from last year)

Mississippi Valley

They're in a major rebuilding stage since they've lost directors from last year. They will be the smallest band in the swac. I have them being barely over 110 in size. I'm sure they'll be fine but it won't be a big public year for valley in the swac so expect them to be underground this year but still a decent sounding group.

Size: a little over 110 (decrease)

Pvamu

This will be a big year for pv . They will increase this year for the following reasons. They consistently been good in their sound since 2013 , had solid seasons, and have grown the previous seasons being the band of Houston. They have a brand new stadium set to be opened against txsu , which is increasing enrollment, and pv has momentum behind them as they're out of the rebuilding stage and into the competitive stage to knock on the door of the top 3 in the swac this year. Expect them to be either close to 200 or well over 200 this year, as they are expected to have an increase in the new campus era of pv. Well deserved as well. They will be 185-220 this season.

Size 185-220 (Increase)

Southern

Southern again had a outstanding year, and rumor has been confirmed they have 270 on the roster to come to camp, however budget cuts will not enable southern to keep that size, and Haymer has been fine with keeping 192 on the field and 215-225 in the stands. So, don't expect this to change. I see a about the same size of maybe 215-230 with an increase in the brass and an decrease in the wind ensemble. They'll be the ones to chase as usual with excellent arrangers in Taylor and Simons and the new field at the stadium gives the group a much needed face lift to perform on at halftime.

Size: 215-230 (about the same size)

Texas southern

Upon retirement and takeover of a new director. It was promised the focus would be to increase the size of Texas southern as they've barely scratched over 120 in years past. I've heard this group didn't have a good enough recruiting year to go up too 200 as said in the letter due to pv and they're opening of their new stadium being more attractive to recruits, But will see a increase to the size of 160's in the stands. Maybe more. This will be good but the jury is still out on txsu and their consistency in sound this year. Pv game will tell all.

Size : 160 (increase from last years)

Uapb

They will be a dark horse this year because they quietly had a good year. Their stand performances of shame and me, you, and Hennessy brought that 2004 groove to them in solid sound. I'm expecting them to increase but not by much from where they were last year. The directors don't like big numbers because they want to maintain the small and very clean ensemble sound at uapb if large numbers can't adapt to the ideology I.e. Uapb 2013 ... I see this group being in the 150-170 range going up and down through directors preference.

Size 150-170 (slight increase from last year)

That's what I have for the swac so far. If anybody has ideas of what talladega , tenn. state, or some meac groups are looking like please let me know I will have merge videos and first live performances up as the weeks go on. Also if anything changes in numbers please put them here. Band camps tend to cut size or maintain them.

PV is the band of Texas. The University has been investing a lot of money in the Marching Storm. The staff has done a great job recruiting throughout the state as well as scheduling recruiting stops during out of state games. Major appearances like Honda and the upcoming trip to New York for the Macy's Thanksgiving parade have only helped with recruiting. PV will be bigger than your projections.

For the first game 250 and everything after should be 285+

For unlv they should bring the upperclassmen and a few freshman so the freshman can stay back and get ready for tnsu

Our size shouldn't be too hard to guess, we've pretty much hovered around the same numbers for close to a decade. However, I don't see us decreasing our woodwind section since we have 2 full concert bands that we are really trying to push hard. Can't keep that up if we don't have the woodwind numbers.

This is true, alumni close that have spoke too Haymer have said he's trying to increase mello's, have 20 to maybe 24 tubas, and some more trumpets in the fall. But eventually Haymer wants to see 250 in the band down the road.

A current student of the band told me that. He told me they were using the first annual band camp as a serious push to get more incoming freshman in and establish a pipe line to see increase in the coming years like southern, pv, and j.state have seen consistent or increased numbers through their summer band programs. Murray said the above statement to the students helping with the camp off the record. That's not to say Alcorn couldn't possibly have more but as of now numbers are slightly lower from last years group coming into camp. Also people closer to Alcorn have said the same thing in regards to the size of this group on different forums.

Ok I haven't heard this but I'm a let you cook

Every swac band will grow via Facebook pictures and stuff GSU.SU.ALCORN.PV have a really nice size. I prefer pvu at their size they get to travel they. Couldn't afford to move that big band they had. Hopefully Banda travel to them

GSU & SU get larger for Bayou classic I think they let the whole band perform at the botb and game but keep the same number for the field shows.

I can't speak for Grambling, but no we don't get larger. Some of the reserves might not travel to all of the games, but we stay pretty consistent with numbers with a person here or there quitting or getting zipped.
