Southern takes home Male Coach of the Year and Male Athlete of the Year at the 2014

Re: Southern takes home Male Coach of the Year and Male Athlete of the Year at the 20

Not to turn this into a band topic, but I know doggone well JSU folks aren't trying to talk about bands changing styles? JSU started beefing up their brass numbers and adopting an aggressive, brass-heavy sound around the early 2000s(cause SU was destroying them every year). Before then, JSU was more about finesse and musicianship, and was great on the field. They changed their whole playing style, and even began to place less emphasis on the field shows, which has just been corrected by Dowell Taylor when he took over. Don't believe me, go check the clips of pre-2001 JSU and compare it to 2002-present JSU.

Like JR said, only FAMU should be in a conversation with S.U. about marching bands. The voters easily made the right selection in that category.......I'd be surprised if the voting was even close...........

Delusional as usual. No wonder YOUR folks LOVE coming to Jackson and it ain't just to see football. Just ask your own bandheads. A lie ain't nothing for some folks to tell.

Dude, we had a new band director around that time and besides, The BOOM is way more balanced and crisp than su and was better than su this year like last year.
You guys now have a wet-behind-the-ear 30 something rookie at the helm now. Watch the quality of the Juke go down over the next four years IF you keep dude as director that long. You can right click and save this.

NCAA RANKS SOUTHERN BAND #2 IN THE NATION

The National Collegiate Athletic Association has ranked Southern University’s Human Jukebox Marching Band as the second best marching band in the country, following Ohio State University this past December.

The 210-member band received the honor through a video released on the NCAA’s website December 2nd, with The University of Tennessee ranking fifth, Ohio University at fourth, and Stanford University coming in at third.

The Human Jukebox have had their share of top ratings as they were ranked the #1 band by USA Today, best dressed band, number one HBCU band, and number one dance squad.

They have also performed at five super bowls, three presidential inaugurations, four sugar bowls, and in several music videos with the most recent being The Jonas brothers’ “Pom Poms.”

Lawrence Jackson, Director of Bands at Southern University, said that this ranking speaks louder than one would think and will possibly boost University recruitment.

“At the same time, in my heart and my eyes, I still feel that the Human Jukebox will always be number one, but that rating by the NCAA speaks volumes because that rating is compared to the NCAA football championship that Florida State won and came in first place, and Auburn was cited as the number two football team in all of NCAA, just like Louisville won the NCAA Basketball Championship, and the second place team Michigan, would be Southern University if that was the case. That’s how huge that is and that’s great because it’s going to help university recruitment because everybody want to be a part of something that is nationally known,” said Jackson.

Keith Morgan, drum major and sophomore Mass Communications major from New Orleans, LA said he was surprised, but honored to be recognized for doing what they (the band) love to do.

“Being the only HBCU recognized in the top 5 bands in the NCAA is truly a great honor. I was in awe when I heard the news and I’m thrilled that this is definitely an extra memory to add to my list during my time as a member of the Human Jukebox. The band and I are truly grateful for the ranking and we will continue to please the crowd by doing what we love to do,” said Morgan.

SMH. Dude you really have clue. Really none at all. Again if you are a true Juke and know your history, there is no band in the SWAC we should even argue with. Period. Zero. Absolutely NO ONE. That's how great the SU program is and has been.

You dummy. Dowell Taylor took over the Boom in 84 at a younger age than Haymer is doing now. Dowell did that without even being on the JSU Staff at the time. But you going to sit here and say Haymer who has been on SU staff for 8-9 years and knows the ins and outs of the Jukebox and pretty much been running the band anyway is going to take the band down? LOL. If anything, SU is going to be even more deadly with him in charge because he has a chip on his shoulder and will be creating his own legacy. Band directors don't wait to be 50 years old to take over a program. Even Doc Greggs was not that old in 69 when he took over SU. You need a young guy running the show. Soon to be Dr Haymer will cause some of your lazier band directors in this conference to look real bad soon. I can't wait. See we have succession planning at SU for the band program. We don't just hire anybody to take over. That's the problem with most of the bands anyway. Still stuck with these old band directors who have seen their best days.

All I will say is folks better have their bands ready when Haymer gets his way implemented.

He would not know. LOL. Hell he has a Southernite on JSU staff right now. Whether it has been Pop Duplessis, Paul Adams or Sanford. There has been some SU influence on that staff over the years. Now you ain't going to see that at SU. If you are not a SU grad/marched in the Jukebox. You ain't getting on staff.

Well our administration killed any plans like that at PV with their hate for Prof Edwards and who they hired to take his place.

BCU should be added to that mix as well.

Wow! I heard it is not being received well down there at PV. I am shocked you guys did not hire a PV alum. You got a ton of them out there doing things.

Not long term they should not. They have been consistent of late. But in historical band speak is what I am talking about. Because they are better than FAMU presently. But I would not put their program over FAMU historically. Neither would I put BCU over Gram either historically. I usually don't get in many debates about what the bands are doing currently. Each year can have someone be better than the other. But on a consistent long term basis on what your body of work is from back in the day until now is important to me. Like in football. One can never argue with what Gram has done no matter what has happened recently.

FAMU and SU to me have done it the best the longest and most consistently over time. Obviously FAMU is having issues after the hazing death and such.

Yeah, BCU has just come up lately. I remember going to Jacksonville, FL when S.U. played them one Labor Day weekend. I saw them "coming up" a tad at that time and noticed they were getting better. I am guessing they started closing the gap when the Florida Classic started getting large and they needed to get better to prevent further embarassment.

Re: Southern takes home Male Coach of the Year and Male Athlete of the Year at the 20

Yeah BCU is great and has taken over Florida and Atlanta. Another band to look out for is North Carolina A&T.

Like I said our administration was not too fond of Prof so the last thing they wanted to do was hire one of his proteges.
The new hire isn't meshing too well with the alumni.
