Jackson State is a solid band, but SU has been on roll with music video appearances, Super Bowl performances, etc........

We won the award last year.

What's your point? SU won it in 2012 and FAMU won it in 2011. SU won it this year because they had a good year. Pretty simple concept.

You cant really count Kenns opinion. He was the person that started GSUs demise by hounding Doug and stabbing Grams athletic department in the back. Grams 1 win in the past 2 years (damn you Valley) can be traced right back to Kenn. So his judgement is shakey to say the least.

Big Worm turn a previous 4 win team into a SWAC Championship team, I see no problem with it however an argument could be made for JSU Baseball Coach Omar Johnson ...Dray Joseph should up all season so again no problem with that...band of the year I wouldve gave that to JSU Dowell Taylor has done wonders but it is what it is...

Congrats to the SWAC award winners...

If not an argument, I would definitely argue for the baseball team to have been the Men's Team for the year over NCCU basketball.

To overcome the adversity all season and shut out a highly ranked team in the playoffs is much more than a #14 seed losing by nearly 20. And they were back to back champs. So, as much publicity as basketball gets, JSU baseball should have been team of the year.....IMO.

An argument can certainly be made for both. Omar engineered his team to a remarkable turn around from the regular season and had his team performing at a very high national level at tourney time. It is a great feat taking out the #1 team in the country in post season play. As a matter of fact, I think Alabama State could have gone to a regionals and won 1 or 2 games as well against any team in the country. This was an awesome baseball season.

That's a lengthy debate and we know which direction it would go.

But, as far as coach of the year, Odums in his 1st true year, took over a team which had 3 previous losing seasons and won the conference.

Jenkins, had a great year, was ranked all season, defeated a (very weak) FBS team last year, and went to the playoffs. But, all of BCU's accomplishments last year were expected. As a matter of fact, they didn't meet all of their expectations when they lost to Coastal Carolina in the 1st round.

So, to answer your question, Odums was better in propelling his team farther than expected last season.

President Carolyn W. Meyers is HBCU Digest’s Female President of the Year, the organization announced Friday.

“I am humbled by this honor, but this is really about my outstanding team of administrators and the faculty, staff and students at Jackson State University,” Meyers said. “They are the reasons for our success.”

Jarrett Carter Sr., HBCU Digest’s publisher, said Meyers more than deserved the honor.

“Dr. Meyers for the last two years has really etched out a strong case for how HBCU leadership should go,” Carter said.

“She has been strategic about enrollment and technology and she hasn’t been afraid to go out and get the resources to make this happen. She was a runaway choice this year.”

Jackson State had record enrollment last year and opened a campus-authorized Apple store, the first in Mississippi and one of few in the country. The university also continued implementation of the nation’s largest freshmen iPad initiative, which provides all first-year students with iPads to help with coursework.

According to JSU folks, of course. JSU is just concerned with being louder than SU because we are known as a power band. SU outplayed JSU both times and displayed better musicianship. JSU was just loud.

But again, that wasn't why SU won the award. Look at the criteria.

Nominees in this category will be able to demonstrate local appeal and a positive ambassadorial outreach for their college or university through submitted examples of media coverage, or examples of performances outside of their home campus and city.

It was a great year for SU in regard to the stated criteria. Topped off with being ranked 2nd only to Ohio State in the band category.
