BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- Birmingham city funding for the Southwestern Athletic Conference could be slashed or eliminated altogether following the college sport's conference decision to move its football and basketball championships to Houston, Texas.

Birmingham last year spent $500,000 on SWAC and is set to increase the amount to $550,000 under Mayor William Bell's proposed 2014 budget.

But several council members question why the city would continue to provide money for the Birmingham-based conference that is shipping its major events away from Birmingham.

"The city has shown good will toward them. Certainly we're not responsible for promoting their conference, but we have been a solid partner," Council President Roderick Royal said. "But if we cannot have certain tournaments and or the championship games in basketball and football, then the city needs to move to terminate the contract and let Houston pick up the weight."

The city also provides downtown office space for SWAC.

"If there is no bottom line taxpayer benefit then the city should move along. I would feel that way about all of those venues that receive taxpayer dollars," Royal said. "That's unfortunate, but let the die roll and 'goodbye.'"

They should not give the SWAC any money. I can only assume Houston is giving the SWAC more than 550K if they are walking away from that deal. Next move is the SWAC office going to Houston. The city has a ton of money and hell they built one of the divisions of my company a building for free just to get them to move into the area.

The Big 12 is stationed in Dallas... They rotated their championship game... C-USA is based in Dallas.. So what... The Southland conference is based in Dallas.. They don't have a team within 200 miles and most or further than that... 500K... WTF... If that's breaking B-Hams bank then they need to leave it alone anyway.. That's fish fry money... Big Time College athletics isn't for everybody....

True......Also the SEC headquarters is in B'ham and their championship game is in Atlanta and their main bowl (Sugar Bowl) is in New Orleans. :emlaugh:

They're sure are some attacks on UAB though the article is about the SWAC. I do not expect UAB to show any relevancy in football especially with a school about 60 miles away from Birmingham.

Has the City of Dallas provided any financial incentives to the Big 12, CUSA, Southland? I am just asking a question. The City of Birmingham does not provide a financial incentive to the SEC so that point is moot - even though the City and the SEC collaborate on various events and the City is a partner in times of need - for instance the City of Birmingham does not provide the SEC anything for their Baseball Tournament BUT the City of Hoover does - and im sure the City will still be a partner with the SWAC when it comes to using the Crossplex for the Indoor Track Champs - it might not be at the same level as it has been.

$500,000 a year does not break Bham but at the same time it would be assinine to give half a million to an entity with NO economic impact at all in return...and thats $500,000 in addition to office space, stadium usage, ancillary cost (police, etc...)....

I'm going to look into the COP's contingency plan as I'm sure they knew this was inevitable.

Let me start by saying that the City of BHAM is justified in raising the question if funding should be reduced or even discontinued. I get that. But I have a problem with this quote:

"Indeed it's sad that all the years of dollars we've pumped into SWAC that they're not more committed to staying here," Hoyt said. "The first opportunity they get, they're moving out. It just goes to show we've got to think how we incentivize businesses."

The SCG has been in the Birmingham for what?...13 years? Don't act as if the city hasn't benefited financially from it. As with all things...THINGS CHANGE.

Let's not forget. There was a vote 3 or 4 years ago (I believe) to move the SWAC office to Shreveport. The SCP voted against it. We shouldn't be surprised that any of this is happening.

Sounds like sour grapes ....
whats "sour grapes about Bham not wanting to continue doling out this money to the SWAC with nothing in return? Surely, you wouldn't expect the city to continue giving at the same level before the signature events were moved out of Bham. Seems like a prudent decision by the Bham city council.

The comments more than the action.

If Bama State in the championship, I'm going regardless of location....Going to Birmingham for the MCC was enough for me....
