ASU In No Shape To Make FBS Move

MH

Let me help you with something. Ive read articles on this board about the progress of ticket sales for the new stadium. Each article says that the suites and tickets are almost sold out. Here's the help part. Thats a MARKETING PLOY to scare people into buying tickets. This whole while your tickets have been ALMOST sold out.

The culture for that area just does not support ASU averaging more than 15K per year. You just dont have the fan base or the interest. the black people in Alabama are more interested in Auburn and Alabama than Bama State. You guys are an afterthought or a necessary evil for higher education in Alabama

GR wishes you the best though....Im going to take the high road on this one.

too late!

If Mr. Moon is really concerned about bama state's program he can buy a season ticket to help out, write a positive news story about the good things going on over on campus, open up his check book and make a donation and if they offer the programs his kids are intrested in he can encourage then to enroll and become a hornet. by the way, where is the story about jacksonville state's folly in pursing fbs? south alabama? north alabama? did he write one about troy when they were considering moving up? oh, only bama state? i hear that. what other schools has he openly encouraged not to move up, but instead to move down? only bama state? huh. I'm not mad at him for his reporting over the last 10 years. I mean sure the cole fiasco, the crazy investigation, and ncaa sanctions along with that reporting killed attendance. That reporting got rid of joe reed and has now produced an athletic dept that has never been in such good shape in terms of admin staff and compliance, coaches, facilities, and commitment to winning championships. So for that I say, thanks for the help mr. moon! I also say now that the sanctions are over and enthusiasm around the program is on the up swing, let's see what the future holds in terms of wins, fund raising, attendance, and all the other metrics.

by the way mr. moon, GR says cut it out, your trying to beat him out for hater of the year!!! he's already gonna be in montgomery, cussing mad again on a saturday night!

It's not being negative to say that you can't afford something.
I know people love to be positive and they don't want to be the negative person. But if those same people that says 'it's a good idea, let's go for it" use the same rationale when they are preparing to invest a home or other large financial venture, then they would see the logic of not making a move when a school cannot afford it.

The same positive people know of the rationale.."don't live above your salary" because expenses will devastate you- should apply this rationale about a school moving up in athletic competition. One thing some people make the mistake is forecasting a profit when there is no previous track record on making a profit. That's called a gamble.

That's why schools have season tickets. You can measure the future profit by looking at previous years of season ticket sales. So does Alabama State or any HBCU have yearly season ticket sales that would be over 65% to 85% of the gate?

So does Alabama State or any HBCU have over 15,000-40,000 season tickets sold yearly before a football game is played? That's what an AD or any athletic foundation HAVE to look at before they send their school into a higher expense bracket.

Movie stars can decide to go to London, Paris,Tokyo and Sydney all in one week without worrying about how much it cost. But for us regular folks ,we would have to save up for one trip...If we can save up for it. By realizing you can't afford to take a trip like a bigtime movie star it is not being negative.

But hey if the past numbers for Alabama State are solid...let them go for it.

with Dr Silver coming in as president, ASU might as well forget trying to move to FBS.
Dr Silver likes sports and will be the Hornets biggest supporter but he is no fool

Josh Moon is not the beat writer for South Alabama, Jax State, or UNA.. why would he write an article for them? You and every Bama State fan on this board KNOWS Alabama State isnt ready for a FBS move... You just hate to hear a white man tell you the truth.

i don't believe he's beat writer for bama state anymore either. as far as I can tell tim gayle writes most of the stories on bama state these days. and maybe you have something going on where you don't like to hear the truth, particularly from a white man, but that's your issue not mine.

what we know is that, per mr. moon, no one has said anything to him about bama state moving up so why the article? when he looks around at what's going on over there does he in his spirit say, "no way there doing this to stay in the swac." will attendance increase? yes, particularly if they are winning games as they move into the new stadium. will financial contribtions increase? yes, i believe it will, but at the same time the athletic dept is focused on creating new revenue streams, like hornet vision.
changing conferences is not just about football. that's why you've seen them hire new coaches in several sports that have a track record of producing championship calibur teams. if they are going to attract a suitor to change confernces they have to be competitive across the board, not just in the major revenue producing sports. lastly outgoing interm prez harris has said that they don't want to be known as a black college or the best black college but simply as the best. they are not running from their history, they embrace it but if the swac limits their ability to compete and rise to the top they are not above leaving for fbs or another fcs conference.

Your attendance is not going to increase
your contributions are not going to increase
Neither will have a significant long term improvement

fortunately for bama state they don't have to rely on my optimism or your pessimism. they do the work and we all can sit back and what's what.

Honestly how do you think attendance will go up moving to FBS? Also name those coaches with winning track records? You hired a baseball coach with a winning HBCU track record. Simply put got mansion dreams with trailor park income.

I wouldnt even call it "trailor park" income. I'll call it beggar's change.

Let me show yall the reason why Bama State will never have what it takes to go up a division
Again I say, its the culture
Look at this guy:
p23122wpzzs.jpg

A famous BamaState alum thats always on his show talking about RollTide this and Rolltide that
BamaState grads dont support the school...they are more concerned about Bama/Auburn
The Tide doesnt need his help, that poor school in Montgomery does.

The RickeySmiley example is not an isolated incident.
I went to a JSU BamaState baseball game once
There were a few people sitting behind me with Auburn hats on...
Didnt know what to make of it, but after a while it was obvious they were ASU fans.
I asked them why they had Auburn hats on, they said, thats just who we are.

GR could only shake his head.

the baseball coach has more marquee wins than the entire conference and hbcu or not he dominated where he was before and took 20 freshman to a 2nd place division finish this year. tennis coach has won several national championships. volleyball coach worked with U.S. olympic volleyball if I recall in addition to her college experience. the previously tire-slashed barlow is even winning now. everyone over these is on notice that they have to win on the field and in the classroom.

I'm not talking about attendance going up once they move to fbs....I'm talking bout next season and 2013 as in immediately.

mansion or trailer park...at least we got dreams. I already knew. It's like I tell my students; you can't share your dreams with everyone. sad but true, that even some conference, I mean, family members, people that you love that love you, will see you dreaming big and they try to crush those dreams. to bring it home, think about joseph and all his brothers. they sold that youngsta into slavery b/c he had big dreams. what they didn't know is what God had for him was for him. So yall do what yall do. I hope jsu makes the jump one day. I've already, even as an Alcornite, committed to buying 2 season tickets in football if the tigers move to C-USA, just so I can see yall dust off usm, memphis and the other 2 state schools when they come into memorial, but I know yall not dreaming like that...so I'll do it for ya. Go big blue! (that applies only if big blue goes fbs)

his son is a student at University of Alabama.

That's BS. Cador has more. Cador has won 3 NCAA regional games. Merlendez has won 1. Cador has beaten the #1 team in the nation twice. In 1987 he beat #1 Call State Fullerton in the playoffs. In 2002 SU beat #1 LSU during the regular season. 2003 SU beat #15 Southern Miss in the NCAA playoffs. Bama St finished 3rd in the East btw, which is the weaker side of the conference in baseball.

not according to swac.org. same conference record, bama state had better overall and ended up 2nd in the "weaker" division (weaker w/ the defending conference champ, and a 21-3 jackson state...lol). as for the rest of the post. I'll give you that SU has been SUperioir but Melendez has some cache' and we'll see what's what.
