If the leagues want the bids

It has taken college football's elite more than 100 years to be dragged toward a playoff system that will likely still only have a handful of teams.

Smaller schools have been doing the playoffs for a long time — and they're about to make them bigger.

The Football Championship Subdivision is on the verge of expanding its playoff system from 20 to 24 teams by 2013. The proposal would give an automatic bid to all FCS leagues that want one, seeds the top eight teams and gives them first-round byes and home games in the following round.

"The concern has been we've haven't had a full tournament with automatic qualifiers for all the existing conferences. That's a big part of making sure everybody has an opportunity for their champion to participate," said Appalachian State athletic director Charlie Cobb, the new chairman of the Division I Football Championship Committee. "The sentiment is that by seeding the top eight, it keep more to a truer sense of what a national tournament is about, and I think that's the beauty of what we have."

The proposal goes before an NCAA championships cabinet next month and will be subject to final approval by an executive committee on Aug. 2. It is expected to pass and be in place for the 2013 playoffs, which will include three more at-large bids and one more automatic qualifier in the Pioneer League.

So I guess the question that needs to be asked is does the SWAC want one of these automatic bids since it seems like we will have one IF we wanted it.

Personally, I think it's time for us to consider playoff participation even if it means moving the date of the Bayou Classic.

I'm not saying yall should or shouldn't. Not my school. I guess at this point the other 7 schools who could go would have to consider it. If they do, bye bye SCG. I personally am neutral to be honest. Yes I would like to go and compete against the best FCS schools but don't get pimped by the NCAA with them taking most of the playoff money and schools losing money.

Good question.
THe FCS Playoffs begin the Saturday of the Bayou Classic. That's why SU/GSU/AlaStU ( Plays Turkey Day Classic on Thanksgiving Day) are eliminated from the FCS Playoffs. The Florida Classic (FAMU/BCU) is played a week earlier, which allows them to play in the FCS playoffs, if they earn a spot. I think MikeBigg is alluding to that in His earlier post. Move the BC up One week.

How come the SWAC just take the autobid with language that if Southern, Grambling or Alabama State wins the conference, they automatically forfeit and teh next-best qualifying record represents the SWAC?

Sounds too much like right the SWAC doesnt want a Playoffs somebody closed this thread....:smh:

Sounds reasonable to an extent but what happens the season Southern, Grambling and Alabama State finishes first, second and third leaving the fourth ranked team with a 6-5 record or even worse 5-6 record in that spot to represent us in the playoffs? :retard:

Honestly I would like to see the SWAC officials jump on this chance to play in the D-1AA playoffs, and move the Bayou classic - Turkey day classic game dates. I know some ppl prolly wont like that but come'on, its time for a change. Am I the only one tired of looking at other teams on ESPN and ESPN 2 in the playoffs and the SWAC gets ESPNU for the SCG..I felt JSU could have done damn good last year in the playoffs, and Feel we should wanna compete with the best.

Just my thoughts

Do you really think it would make a difference in the immediate short-term? PWCUs, athletically, run CIRCLES around HBCUs presently and the recent records substantiate it. Does the SWAC own ANY OOC win vs PWCU FCS over the last 10 years?

In case all are wondering, PVAMU travels to North Dakota to play the 2011 FCS Nat'l Champion @ their place. Texas Southern plays host to the FCS Nat'l Champion runner-up @ their home this fall. PVAMU also travels to Beaumont to play fellow FCSer Lamar University. Lamar has had its program in place now for what... all of 3 years (I think). Lets see how ready the SWAC is for the real-deal OOC this fall vs FCS/FBS.

Hate to allude to this past fall but it was an up and down deal for PVAMU OOC last fall. All saw what happened when pitted vs the recent MEAC champ and FCS playoff participant Bethune-Cookman and then went to San Marcos and bust FCS and provisional FBSer Texas State squarely upside the head all w/in the same season. I'm fairly certain PVAMU will hold its own this fall OOC and I'm not the type of black, unlike so many normals, that wants to make excuses w/ that "new staff/new system/blah blah blah" non-sense. You either get the job done or you don't get the job done. Therea aren't parentheses adjacent the "W"-won or "L"-loss columns saying "new staff/new system/...." Just get it done!

The answer is the league should get the automatic bid and send who they want. The record doesn't matter. I say keep the SCG and send the 3rd place team. And if that team happens to be Bama State, Gram or Southern, send the next team in line.....

So you suggesting that the 3rd place team play in the Playoffs? U cant be serious........

If you eliminate the divisions and go with an 8-game conference slate...it's still 7 teams with a realistic shot before one of those three other teams muck up the works...

What would ASU, Gram or SU have to gain by giving up our games so the conference can be eligible for the playoffs. Nobody is going to make any money, we are not going to get any home games and if we won we would be the National Champion of Something That Nobody Cares About.

is like talking to a dead horse, when trying to get SWAC fans, to at least think about something like this.

Pretty much u get *****-ish responses like having the 3rd place team in the SWAC represent the conference in the Playoffs against the Nation best...

So in essence, you've formulated your opinion and based it off a handful of message board posters and lumped practically every SWAC fan as against the playoffs huh? You'll find quite a few who are in support of the playoffs but after the 2,436,752nd thread about this very topic most people get tired of even commenting about it.

So if you go on another message board and find 10-15 SoCon message board posters who are in favor of a championship/bowl type season ending game will you say the same about the SoCon?

What is wrong with the NCAA start the playoffs the next week after Thanksgiving? The bowl games end in January, so what is the hurry. All we have to do is start demanding that the playoffs be moved up a week. Most schools who play in the FCS are really big schools compared to the largest school in the SWAC. We should keep our BC, TC and SCG because there is just as much pride in winning one of these games as in winning a playoff game. The players who play in these game have more satisfaction as those who lose in the first round of the playoff. I still have my memories of playing in the MCC.

bama state might give up turkey day after this season anyway. they have mixed emotions on it but here's hoping that montgomerians can eat turkey at their house after 2012 instead of the parking lot.
