Alabama State does not belong in the NCAA Tournament

I hate when people say that some schools don't deserve to go well damn, they handled their damn business. Your team didn't do it so oh well

There is an argument to be made the conference tournaments only serve smaller conferences as revenue generators. In the multiple bid conferences, it more most likely that the regular season champ will get an invitation to the tournament regardless. If a Cinderella makes are tournament run and wins it, that is gravy for the conference. For one bid leagues, that model does not work and may hurt our chances of our most competitive team making it to the tournament.

Also, if you held the tournament with nothing at stake, it better be one hell of a party because many would be uninterested in attending.
First of all

But Man.
They ain't gonna comprehend none of this in the top part cause I been saying the same shat for 4 damm pages now.

They gonna latch onto that last sentence about the party.

Cliff,
Did it work when FAMU won the MEAC tourney and went to the Big Dance in 99 with a 12-18 record? Or in 04, when FAMU won it again and went with a 14-16 record?

jstate,
just think, the Big Dance didn't come to an end. And the MEAC still has that automatic bid.
:scared::scared:

^^^^^^^^^^^^
See what I'm talking about FAMU CLIFF.
All that blew right past the eyes and ears at Mach-10.

jstate,
In your first post that you kept referring back to, (the one where you agreed that the reg season champ should get the bid) you also said the NCAA would come up with some rule to exclude teams with sub .500 records. That aint been the case since FOREVER. I only highlighted FAMU's, but there are others out there. Stop waiting on Cliff to provide a response to that. But then again, beyond the normal "complaining" (thanks TP), I don't have to really wonder what kind of response can be provided.

MH, I agree that the NCAA will eventually establish some sort of rule that will forbid teams below the .500 mark to enter the tournament, regardless of what conference tournament they won. Enjoy your dance tonight.

It's fine to have the 3+ pages regarding tourney champ vs reg season champ. :| What I have yet to see is what the author in that writeup indicated as "nothing has changed w/in the SWAC even though there are numerous $$$$$$ bball beatdowns occurring." :read: It's a cycle and most have their eyes closed to it. Is the 2011-2012 basketball sched out yet? What major school (former I-A) will your undergrad take a beatdown from this upcoming fall?

The only way that can happen is to abolish automatic bids altogether, cause the NCAA can't control who wins a conference tournament, so they aint about to do that.

Right Panth, that is why I say also let's just schedule alot of cream puffs. You know, NAIA teams, D2 teams, D3 teams, and then rest our starters after the 1st half for those games. Then we can just beat the under .500 teams in our conference and shoot for that #8 seed. After that, we can open the gates and let our ho'ses (Thanks Jones) run for the goal.

MH, dont ever underestimate what the NCAA can and will do. They will find a backdoor to go through. Believe dat. And when it happens, you'll know why they did it, cause how many Big Conference teams you see entering the tournament under .500?

The first couple of times you posted something like that, I thought you were kidding. PLEASE tell me you are.

We need to start scheduling lower(winnable) teams like the MEAC has begun to do. The SWAC has the hardest OOC schedule in basketball. Alumni need to get off their butts and put more money into basketball so the teams don't have to play all those elite teams.

Hampton Unveristy-OOC wins-Winthrop, Colorado State (NIT), Boston College, George Washington, High Point, Fordham, Georgia State & Liberty. Those aren't big name schools but schools taht tend to be decent in thier respective conference.

Butler, North Texas and a few others find teams that they can beat without taking on 4-5 big dogs.

The SWAC has to learn to do that. Nothing is wrong with going after those team that just moved up to D1 level. Nor goign after those annually bad teams like NJIT and Depaul. It can't be one team that does it ti has to be every team doing it and telling the big boys to f--k off when they come running with those checks for blowouts.

I should have put this in the piece I wrote. But the sad thing is that this is probably the worst NCAA Tournament field in 25 years in terms of depth of talent, and the SWAC is no closer to either winning or making a deep run in the thing than yesteryear.

If a big conference team wins their tourney with a sub .500 record, then they will enter the Big Dance. Period. And it won't be any fallout from it either. If sorry arse tech had won the ACC tournament this year, it would've been a great story and folks would eat it up. Whether some folks think some conferences (SWAC included) should get an automatic bid is another story. (and that story is still the same, regardless of the record of our representative)

Who cries foul? Hell, that's why its called March Madness; anyone can lose in a 4-day tournament held on consecutive days. How many D1 teams won their regular season and conference tournament this season, anyway? I can only think of KU and UConn.

Ohio St won the Big 10
Belmont won the Atl Sun
N Colorado won the Big Sky
Butler was in 3-way tie for conf champ and won Horizon tourney
San Diego St tied with BYU for conf champ and won Mountain West
Long Island won the Northeast
Bucknell won the Patroit
Wofford tied for conf champ (divisions) and won SoCon
Oakland won the Summit
Gonzaga tied for for conf champ and won WCC
Utah St won the WAC

Did you not see PV's on-campus schedule the last 2 years? PV men are playing "chrisshun" colleges of 'club-teams' (I think a total of 3-4) on-campus for the on-campus slate in between the $$$$ games. It's not a reflection upon the kids and their level of play because they're doing as they're told to do. But, the administrative "staff" responsible for getting the sched together? Well... And I'm not saying too much that I disagree w/ it because it's the infamous "$$$$$ excu$e." :read:

Marquette Milwaukee, Wis. L 58-97
Wisconsin Madison, Wis. L 55-99

Providence Providence, R.I. L 62-78

Western Illinois Cancun, Mexico L 63-69

I could be wrong but I'm thinking the home tilt vs those club-team "chrisshun" schools isn't what a competitive D-I basketball team destined for the ncaa tourney would actually schedule. So, again I ask, what's changed? In the last 20 years, what's changed besides everything going downhill fast competitive wise?

We don't play for shat outside of a SWAC championship in football so screw losses to OOC opponents. They are meaningless. We ain't playing for a NC in FCS so why schedule FCS OOC at all? :noidea:

I disagree totally with how you feel. Just because a team does not participate in a playoff system, their season is not meaningless. That is like saying if you will never own the company you work for, there is no need for you to go to work. There are many parameters for success.

Ohio State, SDSU/BYU and Utah State were tourney locks. Gonzaga and Butler were not as strong as last year but PROBABLY would have got bids off reputation... Oakland, Bucknell and Belmont (who has 30 wins this year... most in D-I) has outside chances at at-larges...

Funny. This EXACT same conversation will again be sparked next year this time, as it had the year prior, and the year before that and the year before that and the year before that...

Nothing has changed. :| Whatever incoming $$$$ to float the bball team by playing a horrific OOC schedule has done absolutely NOTHING to improve the profile of your said school OR the entire conference from bottom to top. :read:

Forget the below 500 teams-how many teams with big wins, 20+ wins and so on would have gotten inif those auto bids weren't there. Colorado, Colorado State, Baylor, Hostra, Minnesota, North Texas and others.

Georgetown & Coppin State made the tourney with losing records. In fact Coppin was the first 20 loss tema and they barely lost that play in game.

THe confeerence that the SWA should go after for wins is America East-they seems to not mind gettign abused by the MEAC. So gettign abused by the SWAC shouldn't bother them.

It worked wonderful for us. Especially when we won the play-in game and were competative in the first half against KY (I believe). What was better for the MEAC is when the best team went and did not get a 16 seed or in the play in game. LIke when Hampton actually won a tournament game. This year it worked out for the MEAC in that either Hampton or Morgan were good bets to not get the play in game. If Hampton had not lost to FAMU twice, they may have gotten a 15 seed.

The money made at JSU by the bball team does not help the bball team. It goes into our general fund. The Athletic budget is set by the university no matter how much money is "raised" by selling yourself. The money made from football and bball at ALL of our schools is not enough to support itself. You know we are not making 6 and 7 million dollars a year. Payouts are just the only way bball teams can make money for us.

So, athletic $$$$$ recvd goes back into the general fund? :what: :uhoh:

Not over here man. They are separate. Genr'l funds, inclusive of tax $$$ :read:, go to support the univ ops. Athletics is a self-sufficient entity here. :read:
