In the SWAC, “Our limits have been reached,â€￾ says Braddy

Do Duer even know how to promote this conference? Sell it to sponors? Hell, sell it to the Presidents to go along with one of his ideas?

Based on the direction Sharp is taking this conference and as far as we can go with this conference. To a Championship game. That's it. There is a reason that our teams dont look like they know what to do when we play OOC games. A very good reason. It's because we kick each other around every year, year in and year out in our own sandlot. When it's time to go to someone's else sandlot, we look confuse. The only team I saw that is not easily dumbfounded is Grambling.

Sharp does not take a conference in any direction. Our Presidents control that. He is just there to handle the day to day operations of their decisions. A long time ago, most Presidents didn't even attend SWAC meetings. The ADs made the decisions and things were better then. We also have too much turnover with Presidents so half of the decisions made and the reasons why are not understood by many of the Presidents.

:scared::scared:

Maybe they'll listen to you TP

JSU lost 18 playoff games. If anything JSU lost its potential 20 years ago.

This is not about JSU. But we lost 12 playoff games, not 20 and half of them were close losses including our last one and many of those losses were to the eventual champions like Montana and Georgia Southern so we were not the only teams to lose to them in the playoffs.

LOL!!!! Cee, it's evident that your hate for us clouds your judgment. I we lost 18, then that means we were either the best or 2nd best the Conference had to offer. That's reaching limits within itself right there.

Then why da hell do we need him? Give the Presidents a Secretary at the SWAC office to do his duties. With budget crunchies and everything, just phase out that position and keep rollin.

The SWAC never had an automatic bid.

Thank you, they keep saying this and it's not true. The Swac always received a At-Large bid every year when a team went to the playoffs. It may seem like a Auto Bid but it was always a At Large.

Now look at all these jsu folks talking about going to the playoffs.....smh

Dude, nobody is talking about no playoffs, but Cee. We're talking "ADVANCEMENT" of a Conference.

I have said what Braddy has said for years. What is the point of 1-AA football? It has not made any teams relevant....and before you all say they made App State relevant; that is not true. The win over #5 Michigan made App State relevant.

Braddy says we have reached a ceiling and I agree and you can read my post from YEARS ago where I have said the same thing. Back in 1978, we were on par with a lot of 1-A teams but when they went 1-A, we didn't react. We stayed behind. Years later in the 90s, HBCUs tried to form a 1-A conference when we were still quite relevant but we sat on our hands. In the 2000s, we were sitting around going, "woe is we". ...and now the same thing is happening. We have a slave mentality saying, 'we can't".

We can't grow in 1-AA football. Why would a company want to sponsor us? Why would an athlete want to come to us when they have other options? I have no doubt that if JSU were 1-A we could at the very least get some kids who go to those Sunbelt schools and even some who go to USM. We lost a kid to ULL last week... uuum I said ULL and his parents went to JSU! I have no doubt that SU and Grambling could not get athletes from ULM or ULL or LaTech...and you say who wants those sorry athletes? WE DO! They are better than what we have now. We have to make ourselves relevant and you are only relevant in 1-A. If we can get 8 HBCUs to move up to 1-A, in ten years we don't have to be wondering what if? Of course all of us won't make it in 1-A but there are a few of us who may be able to...and guess what? If we don't make it, we can always come back to 1-AA and suck for the rest of our lives.

The problem here is that the individual schools have to come together and get this ball rolling. JSU can't do this alone and that has been proven with attempts by FAMU and AlaState. FAMUs biggest problem was scheduling. If you are in a conference of 8, you will have 7 automatic opponents....and before anyone says "what will be the difference in playing 7 HBCUs when we play that now". The difference is hope: The hope that being 1-A will make us QUALITY 1-A teams that can AT LEAST beat top 1-AA and low teir 1-A teams. Yes, that is a small goal but we can't come close to doing that now. Progress is a process.

He obviously havent been reading.......but anyway the advancement of this conference is what Braddy was talking about and I wish he would've said this years ago.....and I say if the conference doesn't want to get on board and move forward then F-em we can find another conference and still keep one or two rivalry games with either SU,Gram, or Alcorn....It seems like most of the schools in the SWAC are just happy the way things are and if you are thats kool but dont knock anyone for wanting more from the conference.........we may take are lumps with the move but one thing for sure we will be competitive....unlike Tenn St. (no smack because they actually have a good team) we have the fan base for the move....the atmosphere at JSU games is second to none just look at our first home game against Delta State we had a nice crowd over 14 thousand...and Delta State didnt bring any fans or a band and it still was a nice game so we can make this happen.....

Preach Nupe.............and in doing so we can possibly win 6 or 7 games and go to a bowl game against an ACC SEC or a lower D1A school and thats gives HBCU's every where exposure and cant help but to make HBCU's as a whole better..........

Naw we probably won't get a decent Bowl game against BCS team. To start off, we might be able to beg for the New Orleans Bowl tho to face a Sunbelt team. Again, better than what we have now. I think any of the HBCUs with a fan base (a requirement to be 1-A) would flood New Orleans for a bowl game.

Before we dive into the third and final blog post in this series, check out our full-length story on all of this in today’s Clarion-Ledger.

Also, you should know that Braddy’s retirement — which was surprisingly announced yesterday — means many — or all – of his below comments might not mean anything. Well, anyway, here’s all that jazz …

In an interview with The Clarion-Ledger in January, Braddy made clear that he’d like Jackson State to at least research the possibility of leaving the Southwestern Athletic Conference. To be clear, Braddy said he had not spoken to new president Carolyn Meyers about this but hoped to. It’s not clear if he did before retiring Feb. 1. Here are some nuggets from our conversation with Braddy …

Said Braddy: “I think we’ve got to evaluate where we are and where we want to go. As far as I’m concerned, the timing is right for us to consider what benefits we can gain by going to another conference.”

Rest story
 to Braddy. Bout time individuals started questioning this backwards azz conference direction and leadership publically. I damm sure like the fact that they are at least doing research on making a move even though it's not economically possible right now. At least we will have a working plan as a roadmap.

It would mean more Exposure for HBCU's more than just the bands............

random thoughts on the topic:

FIRST - We can FORGET moving to 1-A in football with the level of financial support seen at our HBCUs. That's for starters. The school budgets are already strapped and alumni support is non-existent outside of buying a ticket to the game.

ON ANOTHER NOTE - I wholeheartedly get the argument that the SWAC may indeed be holding some of the better-off programs back. (no smack). In fact some programs may be lagging behind because of our affiliation with the conference (and that's a sad state of affairs). BUT, It would not be beneficial for our institutions to ASSUME that moving to another conference would automatically solve our problems and eliminate the woes experienced in this conference over the recent years.

FAN SUPPORT - I can only speak for JSU in saying that a move to another conference would probably have no effect on our numbers. Our fans just want to know where we are goin and what time the game is. In fact, the "newness" of it all may call for a boost in our attendance I suspect. Besides, I'm sure we could work to maintain traditional rivalries: Alcorn/SU.

ON THE SWAC OFFICE - I think we all have our gripes. I sure do... But at the end of the day, there's only so much the SWAC can do in its current state... The conference simply doesn't have the resources to do what we need to do to go to the next level or AT LEAST become competitive... SOMETHING HAS TO SHAKE.

p.s. i've been preaching for years that the NEW-SWAC has a horrible level of expectation in football... the SWAC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME is our ultimate goal.... #sad/#smalltime

Right! I wished that this forum was done 3-5 years ago before the economy went to hell.

JSU, be honest...

Without Alcorn, SU, and occasionally Grambling, where would your attendence be for a season?

What the SWAC needs is a President who is nothing going to "suck up" to certain schools within the conference. I'm done...

This is simply something that I dont agree with. You dont need alot to become "competitive". You just need some people with brains and innovated ideas. I always said that there are people out there with money that are truly looking for taxable write offs.

to go in order for us to prosper in competition with other conferences.

Do u understand that our LARGEST attendance every year is for a game 3 hours away in which we do not play a SWAC team...
