In the SWAC, “Our limits have been reached,â€￾ says Braddy

what was the score of the AAMU and Troy State game? Tell me when they beat the "slop" out of us.

You posted this so you tell me the score of ALL the TROY/A@M games instead of just one where you "almost won".
Anybody else want to come in like a bamma North poster didn't start talking crap as usual first.

This is not "create-a-school" on a video game. lol. You are living in a fantasy world if you think your program can advance without "supporters" getting off their arse and putting the bucks where their cheers are. *the end*

yall may not want to hear this BUT.... the entire conference needs to put pride aside and move down to D2.

I can somewhat agree with that. That is why I keep telling people to forget these 1-AA playoff dreams. I think HBCUs can beat PWCs but we have to create the situation to make it happen. We have before and we can do it again, but if you don't wanna grow, just throw in the towel. JSU could not beat GaSouthern right now on a good day but I do think that if we moved up, we would have a better squad than them. That may not be lofty goal but you have to start somewhere because otherwise, how do we get a better team than GaSouthern? It's impossible.

I went to conference once and one of our speakers said something I will never forget. He said, if you have a problem, don't always try to solve. Just find a way around it. We have been trying for YEARS to put together teams better than Jacksonville State, McNeese State, GaSouthern etc... Have we not realized that we are behind the 8 ball? It's not gonna happen unless we have a leg up on them. In our current situation, we have TWO legs up, laying on our backs. I say we TRY to go around the problem or go where we have a chance to dominate in our current state...D2.

bruh weve only played Troy ONCE.... what the hell are you talking about.

One thing this post shows is that you all don't understand the difference from hate and reality. You can't comprehend in your small mind that your endowment first of all in no where near Marshall or Troy. Not one of your alumni is willing to invest money into your program as a big time booster. That none of our presidents have the foresight to care about big time sports. That our fans like entertainment and come to things they can relate to in this world. The truth hurts.

Which is why we need to rid ourselves of this conference and thinking. We don't have to worry about "Woe is me schools" looking to be dragged along, we could focus on what is important for JSU and JSU only. We building ours one step and one plan at a time. All Braddy did was speak on the future and the realities it bring. Something people in this conference run like hell from doing until disaster kicks you in the face.

Sort of like when Bamma A@M moved up to FCS and then just 4 short years later, was crying about cutting sports or having problems feilding teams, (baseball), no money to keep them going, and moving back to D2.

You posted that YOU Played them. I don't care how many time you played them. Ain't looked, not gonna look. Thats why I told you to post them since it's important to you.

I said they would beat the slop out of you on a post before that because a Bamma A@M poster said they were nothing on the FBS level. That was after all the other Bamma non-sense that usually appear.

we have never had problems fielding teams, and no one ever mentioned moving back to D2.... please stop believing EVERYTHING you read on these boards.... we had a new president who said IF he would have been president earlier that AAMU wouldnt have remained D2.... he never stated anything about moving back to D2.

Let's look at our culture and community. We all can't name more than 20 folks who gave our schools over 1K. Most of us can’t name over 50 folks who buy season tickets every year. Most of us can’t name over 100 folks who went to school with us that are active in the alumni association, booster club and donate yearly all three of these during the school every year. Not one or two but all three every year. Most of us can’t name 100 of our alumni that give to the school before they give to themselves. Most of us can’t name 100 folks who come to the games no matter who we are playing and what our records are. I stop right here for now. I can really go on.

Well at JSU this academic year alone
57 people gave over $5,000
72 ppl gave between $2,000 and $4,999
89 ppl gave between $1000 and $1,999
So that's 218 over $1,000

Can't name 50 folks who bought season tickets
We sold over 4,000 season tickets

Can't name 100 folks that went to school with us that are active in the alumni association
Not only that but we formed a new young alumni organization with over 100 members and made contributions to the university.

Trust me, I understand your argument. And we DO NEED TO DO BETTER. It's what I'm always harping on... But I just thought i'd throw the numbers out there since u were doing that lumping JSU in with yall thing again.

.....

•And then there’s that whole FCS playoff deal. The SWAC gave up its automatic bid into the FCS playoffs in 1999. The league created the two divisions and the SWAC championship game. Said Braddy about that: “Where do we go other than just playing in the SWAC championship? I just think it’s important for us to try getting in the I-AA playoff system or to the next level — preferably to the next level.â€

•Recruiting is hurt, Braddy said, because JSU doesn’t go to the FCS playoffs: “A lot of time we run into the recruiting problem because a lot of the kids that we are trying to recruit want to go to the FCS schools (that play in the playoffs). Certainly it would increase our chances of getting better athletes and national recognition.â€

.....

Whether one likes the plays or not, they must understand this. Recruiting is the life blood of a program. Mack Brown said something interesting in an interview with former college coach Jackie Sherrill, a person with over 180 wins as a coach himself. If one does not win on signing day, they cannot win on game day. Of course others have said this too.

I think that there are exceptions but feel that we can do better. Look at how Old Dominion and Georgia State supported their programs.

My only point is that nothing can be done absent of increased support. It doesn't pan out... A large chunk of whatever happens at this juncture will be 'organization building'... We have to find a way to galvanize the fan-base, alumni-base and create a culture of support if we plan to advance. Moving to another conference without doing that will only multiply our problems. (am i making sense...) All of these changes aren't monumental... Even in our current format we (JSU) give away money on JSU events. We could make some really easy changes i.e. pulling out of dead-end classics and redirecting the economic impact back to the campus.

NT, you talkin like unsaved folks saying they have to be saved first before they can go to church. Bruh, we have already galvanized ALL of those things time and time again....and again and agian. How much more galvanizing do we need to do? How do you get increased support by doing the same things? For example, we know our fans are not going to come out for 1-AA white folks. 1-AA PWCs are nothing to us. We know that. We know companies are NOT going invest in us and give us money. We know 1-A teams are not going to give us money. The MONEY is in 1-A football.. PERIOD. There is not debating that. We can either go where the money is or we can stay where we are. I don't see the difference in stayin 1-A and TRYING to increase support or going 1-A and trying to increase support. In fact, it would seem easier to me to increase support as a 1-A school. For example, we could go to Nike right now and ask for a a million dollar sponsorship. WHY WOULD THEY GIVE IT TO US. They could give to Morehouse. Why should they make apparel line for HBCU when there are 100 of us and then why not make a line for the 100 1-AA PWCs while they are at it? WE HAVE NO BARGAINING POWER RIGHT NOW. if Duer approached them and asked them to give the SWAC $5M dollars, why should they give it to us instead of the Southland conference. But I could better envision a scenerio where a commissioner could go to Nike with only EIGHT HBCUs who are set apart from all other HBCUs and set apart from all other 1-AA PWC and get a marketing deal. We need to position ourselves to take advantage of what is out there. Right now, we are in the wrong platform. PERIOD. That is why you have schools who ran 1-AA who are content with being 1-AA nobodys. Troy, LaTech or ULM could proabably be top 1-AA teams but that does not matter to them. They have to be where the money is to get some and THAT is what they care about.

Another example: Right now you have PWCs moving to the Classic format. MONEY TALKS which is why I say we can't worry about right now. Where do we want to be. We shun what we started wanting 400K for a classic invite but going across to globe to play a 1-AA team for $200K. Imagine struggling 1-As like Eastern Michigan who can't even afford to bring JSU and BOOM to game accepting a more lucrative deal to play 1-A Alabama State in Detroit. We have to look at the sponsorship opportunities that would bring. The recruits that would bring and the exposure it would bring. We would actually have some 1-As by the balls if we show them we can help them make money.

NO SWAC school has ODU or Georgia State money coming in. You are talking about schools with 25k students.

Can't name 50 folks who bought season tickets
We sold over 4,000 season tickets

I read that we sold close to 9000 season tickets but I am not sure if that includes those 3 games packs. However, with the price of season tickets, one would have been dumb not to buy them. I liked marketing they did even after the season started to combine AAMU, SU, and Homecoming in a $50 package for those who missed out on season tickets.

What did we learn? Cheap tickets sell. 24000 peope at 10 dollars is the same as 12K at 20 dollars.

U are again missing my point and/or misreading my post... i said NONE OF THIS can happen ABSENT of increased support... and we must do something.. I don't care... Move to 1-A! GO! (but we will need increased support to make it work)... Move to another 1-AA Conference! GO! (but we will need increased support to make it work) ... STAY IN THE SWAC! GO! (but we will need increased support even to stay viable there)... I'm with JSU whichever way the leadership decides to go. WE NEED INCREASED SUPPORT though PERIOD. To think moving is the solution in and of itself is not very smart.

Maybe you are thinking i'm equating support to ppl coming to games... NOT. lol.

..and Kennesaw State is about to be next. GaState is about to ruin those TNState, AlaState, JSU and FAMU pipelines. :smh: Again, why play for FAMU when you can play for a 1-A team...even if that team is GaState?

smh... It took us 6 years to figure that out... Sell the tickets for $10 and get 50,000 people to the stadium > selling 7,000 $30 tickets.

do you think Troy would also "beat the slop out of Jsu now?

Completely not the issue. But for your sake of not bringing the question up again, Yes. The Concordia comment wasn't needed either.

I agree with TP, NT, DaHill and tsutiger. They all make excellent and REALISTIC points. Our attendance would not suffer much, if any. With a move up we would be able to get better payouts. Shoot we (HBCU's) are just beginning to break the 250K mark when the same low level 1FBS is making 6-700K and if you're an upper low level you can pull a mil. Plus the revenue sharing that would come from TV contracts, shoot D2's have better contracts than us. And etc., etc. I won't go on about other benefits.

Yes I feel we have reached a ceiling in the SWAC and have for quite awhile. It's beginning to tell in our recruiting. Today's student wants to play FBS whether their talent dictates it or not, and if they have the slightest opportunity they will go. While I fully believe in community looking out for each other, this conference sometimes takes it wayyyyyyyy too far. And with virtually every decision I read about, I cringe behind this screen. But like NT said, in order for there to be a successful move up or even not a move at all, we have to clean around our own front door first, we will have to create our own infrastructure.

I'm glad Braddy spoke out, I just wish he hadn't thrown the rock and ran...He should have been having these discussions internally from the gitgo if he felt that way.

Yeah, I thought you were saying that we need to increase support before considering a move. To me, that is not very smart. Moving COULD be a solution if it brings about more support. BUT support won't come from us right now. The support I am talking about is in the form of intangibles (better recruits, better marketing, better support personnel, increased TV time and revenue, payouts from BCS schools, increased sponsorships, etc...) We CAN'T get ANY of that in 1-AA. So we have to move to get it. There is no way around it. And no i don't consider coming to game support but I do expect an increase in that too. If we could 3-4 games a year at 40K, that would be great.

But you have to understand as well that I am very anti-1-AA  That is why I don't support the playoffs. I don't see anything they ever did for us or anything they ever did for PWCs. A Legacy Bowl is better for us. Prime example: What SCState's band did in Atlanta in a simple band battle made them much more attractive to a student than a playoff game ever did. A Legacy Bowl would bring us money and exposure (which has no price tag). That is what we NEED more than a playoff loss.

Yup, Georgia State is killing us in recruiting right now, in their 3rd recruiting class. Besides the fact of their coach and chance to live in the A, their recruiting budgets are bigger. I'm with NT, we have got to support better and then we can/will progress.

Maybe in the short term, but long term Ga State got the $$ that they will be recruiting a different athlete than us.
If anything, if they were to stay at FCS, they would probably dry up a helluva lot of transfer pipelines for a lot of our schools. Now that they are becoming more "traditional", the potential is there for them to make some noise.

and if you think GaState is on the fast track, you ought to take a look at South Alabama. :scared::scared:

They are 50 years behind on building a fan base so I am sure we will bring them to North Avenue for a few azz whoopins!

I agree but it can be done.

...and can you imagine the pressure of a coach having to lead a 1-A conference with FAMU, SCState, AlaState, JSU, SU, Grambling, A&T, TNState etc..

Aside from A&T and possibly AlaState, the fans won't take it and even they won't take it very long. We would be offering $500K salaries tryin to "out do" each other... Say what want, HBCUs or not, that won't be an easy conference to win especially with those schools having a shot at better talent and better coaches. Even looking at last year, I could see JSU's conference record going from 6-3 to struggling to get to 4-3. I also think moving to 1-A would put an end to the Taylor's, Comegy's, Cole's, Broadway's, Barlow's, etc... especially since we might get some decent linemen and can play more traditional football that 1-A assistants can work with.

I think we have untapped potential but someone need to shatter that glass ceiling to realize it.
