My Take On The Student-Athlete vs. HBCU Problem.

He has a point though. You have to offer what the kids want. And you have to do it on a level that is competitive with everybody else.

That's true... But we talking about 4 and 5 star athletes coming out of schools that don't really want to even be in school... which is why most of them leave after 2 or 3 years of college...

And many others would if they had the opportunity to.

Seriously.. we both know it ain't even 2% or a full 1% of BLACK 5 or 4 star athletes that want to be a Doctor, rocket scientist, dentist or what have you...

Through out the entire HBCU system.... our HBCUs cover a lot of ground in mostly all fields...

Let's put it this way back in the 20's 30's 40's 50's 60's and 70's what HBCU schools were offering wasn't a problem...

Why do we HELP these PWCs with excuses why our kids go to them?

I promise you white folk would read these post and be like...

"Haha... that was a good one jstate83...Ima start using that one"...

Complaining on message boards is much more effective. We don't want to do any actual work.

Should we also write our local congressmen as well? You seem like a smart fellow. If you were a black 18-year-old four or five star athlete, why would you chose an HBCU/small school over a BCS school?

*blank stare*

Because I'm Black? What other reason do I need? That's how I make all of my other choices in life.

What "work"?!?!

You mean for all of us to strap up and get guns and go to our state mansions and demand more of our tax dollars go to our HBCUs so we can hire more staff and fund more programs.. since our tax dollars are MOSTLY going to the white schools so that they have all these EXTRA programs you all are asking about? all these great facilities we are speaking about?

I'll wait for the ..."They alums give donations"...

Aight think for atleast 1 second..

Since the BEGINNING even when the white schools couldnt beat GRAM in football.. the states were taking MAJORITY of all tax dolloars to make sure whites schools had WAY more facilities than black school and way more programs offered than black schools...

AIGHT!!

TONS of whites graduated from these schools in the HIGH paying fields.... Coop America CEO comes from these schools....
I know you all heard of the pay scales based on the school you finished from...

AIGHT!!!

Population...

More facilities more teachers... more programs.... = MORE students.....

WAYY more students making waaaay more money then the average HBCU grad....

So yall must be talking about doing the work to take over our governments....

Exactly.

We're waiting on the government to give us something. Life has been so unfair to us. So, instead of going to work to better ourselves let's DEMAND that the government save us.

Yep.

Wait ... aren't you my Republican friend?

Are the alternatives better or shinier?

Shinier.

The facilities, coaching, exposure ... the opportunity to get better by playing with and against higher quality competition ... all an illusion. You know all of these athletes, their parents and advisors have no clue what's most beneficial for them. They have all been fooled.

Shinier indeed. :)

We cool.. But I ain't republican nor Democrat... I share more of the same ideas as non-racist republicans..lol

If you are good you will be found.

I agree that coaching leaves a lot to be desired. Facilities? Well, our facilities have never been comparable. Exposure? See above.

And remember the adage...."All that glitters is not gold"

Yeah, you tell 'em. Kids should not be sucked in by the promises of playing every game on national TV inside stadiums filled with 100,000 people. Tell 'em stopped being wooed by two-story weight rooms, 50,000 people watching spring practice and large student-athlete dining halls filled with nearly endless amounts of options. Forget all that playing in a BCS bowl game or in a national title game. Nobody wants that.

playin in BCS Bowl Games on ESPN in front of 70 to 90 tho fans and millions watching or playing in the SWAC Championship game with barely 30 tho fans! Hard decision! Hard choice if Im a 5,4, or 3 star athlete!

But like I said why are we discussing BCS and FBS schools......when we dont even compete against the rest of the FCS programs in our division who take our kids like GA SoutherN , Appalachian State, the Lousianna schools like SELA, ULL or the lower tier FCS program and we cant even beat Division 2 schools.....until the SWAC administration improves top to bottom we will get the same results............you have to crawl before you can walk....

Right! We have to crawl before we walk.. meaning expecting 4 and 5 star black athletes to consider HBCUs when we were their only option years ago.. and the only folk who truly gave a damn about their futures...

How dare we want kids who don't have the grades to be considered at these BCS FBS schools.. but have the athletic talent to go... In the mean while forcing these teachers to GIVE these black athletes grades so they can go to these BCS FBS schools....

How dare we.. who do we think we are?!?!?!

smh

Yeah, our FCS brothas have taken it to another level. I was watching ESPN's First Take this morning during a segment featuring Joey Harrington and Jason Campbell. The host, Jay Crawford, asked Harrington what would it mean for Oregon to win the national championship.

He said it would validate all the risks the school had taken the last decade with the billboard in the middle of Times Square, the crazy uniform designs and all that just to get attention. He said the school wanted to step outside the shadow of USC and other schools in the Pac-10. As I said earlier, schools and the conference need to either be content or radical in their approach.

In my freshman year at Texas Southern I had an 8 a.m. English class. I did not live on campus and had to catch the city bus to school. I was late for class several times. One day that I was late my professor called me to her desk. She looked me straight in the eyes and said, "If you are late for my class one more time I am going to flunk you". She put the fear in me....I was not late another day that semester. If I had to catch a cab from downtown I did so. Why did she do what she did? Because she gave a damn. She knew I needed a kick in the butt to get me focused. I also learned not to schedule 8 a.m. classes.

In my freshman year I had a white adviser who "assisted" me in filling out my schedule. I was int he band room one day and Ben Butler (the director of the Ocean) asked to see my schedule. He asked me why was I in a reading class? I said my adviser said I needed it. He looked at me and said you don't need to be in a reading class and suggested a subject that I did need. I went and got my schedule changed. It appears that the German thought all Black youth could not read and needed remedial courses. Butler thought different.

When my son was at Texas Southern in the Ocean he and another band member almost got into a fight. The band director (who I know personally) called me to tell me what was going on and if my son had another incident he was going to relieve him of his scholarship. I had a talk with him and explained that my son is very passionate about anything he gets involved in it and if it appears to him that others don't take things as seriously as he does then it does not set well with him. My conversation (actually we exchanged emails) was enough to give him a better insight into my boy and what makes him tick. By the way, my son was standing up for a guy who was being dissed and not present to defend himself. After that time my son went on to become one of Rick's favorite and most dependable band members.

I sighted those instances to say that I doubt very seriously if I had been at a PWC that neither of those situations would have turned out favorable for either of us. We have relationships at HBCUs that we do not have other places. Others will see our kids going down the wrong path (or even short change us) and say nothing because they can run and throw and jump and shoot. They use them up and discard them like old shoes. A student who can't run and throw and jump and shoot does not get the same consideration. As a matter of fact they make it more difficult for them to get into their schools.

I say the for the most part HBCUs care about their students....all of their students. Do we have incompetence...hell yes but we also have people who care....and those who care I think are in the majority.

Someone with deep pockets at Auburn (or somewhere) is the only thing that kept Cameron Newton from going down. Remember he couldn't get on the field at Florida because they had another fellow with a comparable skill set. It was either really deep pockets OR the idea of being able to make a whole heap of money off of the BCS championship game because of Cameron Newton. They have kicked guys out of school for much less offenses.

There are student-athletes who screw up at HBCUs and be dumb jocks just like those at PWCs who are lazy an turn into dumb jocks.

There are professors and advisers at HBCUs who don't really care about student-athletes just like there are at PWCs. Some schools are better at helping student-athletes. Some are not.

We can all paint with a broad brush if we like, but we have live in reality. It comes down to the kid taking advantage of the opportunity presented in front of him.

If a kid wants to screw around, not go to class and think football or basketball will be his meal ticket, being at an HBCU won't save him.

Ok

The point of me creating this thread is to pose this one question...

Are the HBCUs doing everything THEY can to at least give themselves a chance to recruit some talent?

I say...NO.

For example, at Alcorn, we all know that the surrounding counties are Claiborne, Jefferson County, Adams County, and Warren County. Now take all those high schools in this area and combine them against teams such as Wayne County, Meredian, West Jones on another team. They would get crushed.

What makes me so mad is that a common excuse among HBCUs, especially here in Mississippi is that the kids at the 4A, 5A, or 6A schools do not have the grades or would not go to an FCs school. BULLSHAT!!!

Not every kid on those 4A, 5A, and 6A teams are being looked at by a Division I-A schools and they have the grades. Just throw your name into the hat and see what happens.

Nothing against Brandon Bridge, but why go way to Canada when you have good QBs here in the state of Mississippi.

Also as stated earlier, there is nothing wrong with a white athlete at a MAJOR position (focus on the word MAJOR position). If we as HBCUs have to improve, we must set aside pride as a front and offer more.

The Medger Evers Village at Alcorn is a start. But, the progress must continue.
