House Democrats reject tax plan without changes

House Democrats voted Thursday to reject President Barack Obama's tax deal with Republicans in its current form, but it was unclear how significantly the package might need to be changed.

By voice vote in a closed caucus meeting, Democrats passed a resolution saying the tax package should not come to the House floor for consideration as written, even though no formal House bill has been drafted. Rep. Peter DeFazio, D-Ore., introduced the resolution.

Said Rep. Lloyd Doggett, D-Texas: "If it's take it or leave it, we'll leave it."

The vote, which came after many lawmakers chanted "just say no," will at least temporarily stall what had seemed to be a grudging Democratic movement toward the tax package.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said in a statement that House Democrats share Obama's "commitment to providing the middle class with a tax cut to grow the economy and create jobs." She noted that a House-passed bill, which Republicans blocked in the Senate, did not include "a bonus tax cut to millionaires and billionaires."

"We will continue discussions with the president and our Democratic and Republican colleagues in the days ahead to improve the proposal before it comes to the House floor for a vote," the California Democrat said.

was cutting deep into President Obama in regards to the tax cut decision and even using the words “goddamned wrongâ€￾ Olbermann expresses that the tax cuts are actually hurting the poor and also accuses Obama of betrayal. Olbermann blew his lid off uncontrollably during a “Special Commentâ€￾ segment, and called the tax cut an insufficient solution and criticizing various decisions made by this administration that have apparently deranged the entire country.

He rants for over ten minutes in a fervent monologue expressing his disapproval of the tax cuts and many other things he thought President Obama failed to deliver on.

The democrats did not go out in full force for the midterms and some of them hasn't stuck with him on major bills since his elections. Now, some of the dems are trying to cry foul. They need to sit their butts down. The president would not have had to compromise if they would have growns some balls when he was first elected. I stand firmly behind Mr. President. He had to make a tough decision and the repubs are all he had to work with right now. All this is the fault of the democrats and independences who voted for repubs or tea party folk, or didn't vote at all.

I take it nobody listened to Obama's press conference today. He explained in great detail why he did what he did and I personally don't have a problem with it. I have been critical of some of his decisions in the past, but to be honest I think this is one of the few times when he has actually shown some balls. It's just that in this case he did it against the Dems.

For anyone to say that Obama is somehow siding with the Republicans just to get along with them is just crazy. If he allows the Bush tax cuts to expire and allow taxes to go up on everyone, he breaks the promise he made to middle class America that those who make $250K and below would not see a tax increase. In the mean time, he managed to get a 13 month extension on unemployment benefits. And I personally know of people who this will benefit and are grateful.

President Obama has said this time and time again (and I agree with him), that at some point we have to stop playing politics and simply learn now to govern. We are so damned stuck on our own philosophical views that we don't know how to get anything done.

At first I didn't agree with the tax cuts (and I still don't).....but I do believe it's not always about winning and agree with President Obama's decision to extend unemployment benefits.........you have to bear in mind those who are most needy and right now, unemployment is so very high. We have to consider those who rely on benefits to keep themselves and their families fed. I know it means we'll have to keep on struggling, hopefully the struggle will benefit in the end.

I have no problem with folks making $250k a year. Hell I will be there one day. We all should have our taxes increase if you ask me. How else are we going to get out of this massive debt and at least maintain our current standard of living. Revenue is not just going to pop up before our eyes. We have been living under the Bush tax cuts for 8 damn years and look at this country. We are fighting two wars and paying for it on a damn credit. Taxes should have been raised to fund those wars. Taxes should have been raised to pay for Bush's Trillion dollar Medicare Part B program. The same mofos that cry about taxes are the same ones who complain when the roads, bridges, schools, etc, are in bad shape with no money for improvements in sight. How else is crap going to get paid for.

No, the Republicans were not behind Bush 100%. Go look up the Medicare Reform Act of 2003. It took the Dems to get that thing passed because most Republicans were not going to support that thing.

Wrong again son, the US government first started taxing the income of its citizens in 1862 to support the Union in the Civil War. Aren't you glad the government taxed the income of its citizens back then? If they wouldn't have we still would have been slaves. In 1913, the 16th Amendment made income tax part of the constitution. Both Democrats and Republicans have played a part in this mess we are in, but these damn Republicans have made things 10 times worse with tax cuts and expansion of government all at the same time. See Bill Clinton adopted the 'Pay As You Go' approach which made a hell of a lot of sense. If you couldn't pay for it then don't put that shyt in a bill. As soon as GWB took office 'Pay As You Go' went out the damn window and look at the debt. This country started its downward spiral under the great Ronald Reagan. This country went from a lender nation to borrowing money from China under his watch. Not only that, his ‘War on Drugs’ policies was put into place to pad the pockets of his buddies while incarcerating a large portion of black men. Reagan was one of the worse Presidents in US history.
