south carolina pols call on black recruits to boycott gamecocks

lingering racial tensions have made their mark on south carolina sports for years, notably in the ncaa ban on all postseason games in the state in response to the confederate flag that flies above the state capitol, occasionally exercised for conference tournaments as well. The latest protest, though, is coming from within the state's own borders, by members of the legislature -- including a former south carolina player -- who have begun encouraging black recruits to renege on their commitment to the gamecocks in opposition to the pending exit of the only black member of the university's board of trustees:

State rep. David weeks, chairman of the legislative black caucus, told the associated press on wednesday that he doesn't think there are enough votes in the legislature to get lawyer leah b. Moody appointed to a full term on the 22-member board next month. She is the board's only black member and is finishing the term of a trustee who resigned before pleading guilty to bank fraud.

"we are asking young athletes to be aware … there are folks in this state who say it's fine to play ball but not be on the governing board," weeks said.

He and several other lawmakers, including former gamecocks lineman anton gunn, a black democrat from columbia, said members of the black community were calling recruits and their families and asking them to rethink playing for the school. [...]
lawmakers would not say how many recruits had been called or whether any were reconsidering their commitments. They also would not identify the callers.

Taking the fight to the football team seems like the last, desperate blow in an ongoing fight over the makeup of the board, which significantly underrepresents south carolina's black population even with one member. About 11 percent of the university's student body is black, according to south carolina's largest newspaper, the (columbia) state, as opposed to about 28.5 percent of the state's population at large. Locally, the battle over that seat has simmered for months, but as a southern native i say with confidence: If you want to increase the awareness of citizens in any ex-confederate state about any subject -- even race -- taking it to the gridiron will never fail. (earning sympathy for the cause is another matter. But people will pay attention -- see comments below if you're lucky enough to get here before i have to turn them off.)

Black athletes boycott the Gamecocks?? Anybody wanna bet this is going to happen???

Maybe back in the 70's or 80's this boycott would've happen when we our own athletes actually supported our HBCU's but the black athlete of today is only concern with the MONEY...........really the collegiate black athlete of today will go to the most racist school around jus so they can get a shot at the pros!!!!!!!!!

I just wish these young guys will have the will to not go to these schools. They dont want us there.

Our naive people haven't realized that yet, some live by that if it's white it's right code and their pushing their kids to do so. I can't wait until the day that our people wake up and support their own once again because no one else will.

I'm not sure if I agree with the idea of pols using student-athletes and pawns in this particular case. If the student-athletes want to protest on their own, fine, but actively going out and demanding recruits not go to a particular school over politics is a little unsettling.

Additionally, why aren't the pols asking black non-student athletes to forgo South Carolina? What about those who do not play football? Are they being told not to attend South Carolina as well? Should the student-athletes who are pondering attending Clemson be contacted?

Yes they do.......Only if we can run a 4.3 in the 40 or have a 42 inch vertical.

And deliver them a National Championship and our black kids wanna go there because they get free NIKE everythang who cares that as soon as they get hurt or have a bad game they will kick em off the team????:noidea:

Are you really a graduate of Jackson State University a HBCU? You should know the deal man.

Oh, forgive me. I did not go too in depth into the story. I thought this issue revolved around the state pols. Now that I see this situation involves the university school board of trustees. I can understand the plight of those who support the outgoing African-American board member. There should be diversity in leadership positions at South Carolina. This action by these people were obviously meant to draw attention to the cause as a possible last resort to save a position.

However, is it fair to put those athletes and their families, who probably not all familiar with South Carolina's hierachy, in the position of being bargaining chips in this situation?

This generation is not interested in their politics, these are issues that are not perceived to touch or impact them. These are issues that impacted their grandparents, its not a part of their lives. Those recruits will not boycott USC.

Why just university of south carolina? :read:

I see a whooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooole lot of black people(kids) fulfilling their own selfish desires (I used to call them DUMB but I now see their point of view) which makes me think that NONE of them will go anywhere else but university of south carolina. :) The politicals attempt @ media notariety will go greatly unnoticed by recruits. lol

Go gamecocks! :emlaugh:

Good luck on this effort! I've made this point to some local talent and they are so caught up with going to these "other "schools" it is quite frustrating! Talent and ability will surface anywhere not just at those big PWU. HOPEFULLY our black talent will give HBCU's the opportunity to showcase their abilities!

Yep.
I can see all them top line athletes turning down full schollies by not going to South Carolina.

These kids are not giving a damm about that flag or whatever they been protesting the last 10 years.
If Ole Miss can attract black talent from all over the country with all the hub-bub they have had over the last 10 years with Col. Reb, Playing Dixie, The rebel Flag, and that latest song, South carolina athletics at gonna feel no effect.

Sorry but its the truth.:lecture:

Those kids just want a piece of that old time "American Pie", and don't really care too much how they get it. It would take some direct effect to get those black kids outta there.

They'll give their blood, sweat, tears, and talent, and exploit themselves to the PWCs, in HOPES that they can get a bone from Mr. Whiteman (ie a chance to play pro sports for Mr. Whiteman, who will profit exponentially from their talent). They won't care, as long as they get paid.

I need to do some research. How much black pro atheletes really do give to the black community. Hell, they make millions of dollars. They are probably against healthcare reform as well...lol

I don't think I've heard or read of Tiger Woods giving to the UNCF. But why would he? He went to Stafford...or Stanford...or some Ivy League, right?

But I digress...

It would be nice to see our black talent matriculate to HBCUs though. I'm almost certain that Mr. Whiteman will go where he sees the talent, and try to draw from there..."ALMOST" certain.

I don't think that going to a PWC will make an athlete jump any higher or run any faster.

Black folks choose South Carolina over SC State for the same reason they choose Tn State over Lane College, Jackson State over Mississippi College, AAMU over Miles, FAMU over Edward Waters.... see where Im going?

We talk about upgrading our facilities.... boast our facilites over other HBCU facilities then talk about kids for choosing schools with facilities that are killing ours.... So the kid is suppose to choose the HBCU with the best facilities only?

Just think if all the black recruits went to HBCUs, the tide would turn and the media would be force to cover us because this is where the talent would be. Everything that they do at the other schools they could do it at HBCUs and make our schools better.

...and then they end up transferring to a HBCU anyway...

thats it right there CJ!

Now for all of those condemn and judging these kids for making their own personal decisions for choosing the their Institution of Higher Learning, I have a question for you?

How many of us work for companies where nary a black person sits on the Board of Directors?

I think if we really researched it we would find that a good number of us do. Why? Because we want that pay check thats why. Its no different than a college kid choosing the school that they want to go to. DaHill it the nail on the head. I had a full academic scholarship offer from FISK and Paine College, I chose not to attend either for several reasons including the physical attractiveness of their facilities. Basically, I didn't think that the appearance would allow me to fully enjoy my college experience. So I can not knock someone who decided to play basketball at Alabama over AAMU because Coleman Coliseum looks a 100 times better than Elmore Gymnasium.

Nah frat, the media wouldn't. They would just promote the all white teams with their all white stars they have created. Hell it may even boost their ratings among white Americans. What would happen is that we would still be called not on their level and those schools would not play us for fear of losing. LOL.

Now the NFL would load up on our players like they used to when we had better talent that went to the NFL. But if you think the media creates the great white hope now with just one or 2 players like a Tebow. Just think how they would act if they had teams full of them. The only thing that would happen would be a lot of racial bickering going on from them and us about why we will not come to their schools and say we have chosen to segregate ourselves from them.

These rich boosters would still provide for their teams. The only thing would make them beg for us back is if some schools still got some black players while others suffered from the boycott. If say a USC was still getting black players but Texas wasn't and USC was beating the isht out of the all white teams. Then it would cause an issue for them like it did for schools who didn't admit us back in the day.
