South Carolina pols call on black recruits to boycott Gamecocks

thats it right there CJ!

Now for all of those condemn and judging these kids for making their own personal decisions for choosing the their Institution of Higher Learning, I have a question for you?

How many of us work for companies where nary a black person sits on the Board of Directors?

I think if we really researched it we would find that a good number of us do. Why? Because we want that pay check thats why. Its no different than a college kid choosing the school that they want to go to. DaHill it the nail on the head. I had a full academic scholarship offer from FISK and Paine College, I chose not to attend either for several reasons including the physical attractiveness of their facilities. Basically, I didn't think that the appearance would allow me to fully enjoy my college experience. So I can not knock someone who decided to play basketball at Alabama over AAMU because Coleman Coliseum looks a 100 times better than Elmore Gymnasium.

That part I can agree with. We complain about kids choosing PWCs over HBCUs when we have moved out of the urban areas into these racially mixed neighborhoods and send our kids to either private school or good suburban schools with the other folks and get our kids used to all the so called good stuff/amenities and then get pissed off when they want to go to the same schools as their white peers do when it is college time. It is totally different from when a lot of us went to school. I know my generation growing up in Jackson, we understood the struggle and we had parents who couldn't even think about going to a PWC. We got that. These kids don't see all that and are removed from us vs the man thing until they get in trouble of course. LOL. But our flight from HBCUs goes much deeper than a lot of us realize. I grew up hating Ole Miss and Ms State and so did alot of my friends even though when we were going to mixed raced schools and got along with our white counterparts. But we still didn't have that feeling that we wanted to go those state schools. It was always about the JSU's, Alcorn's and Ms Valley. Maybe USM. They always seemed to get a pass from us. LOL. But for the most part that is how we looked at it. The only PWCs a lot of us considered were out of state schools and mostly ones that SEEMED to be more accepting than Ole Miss and Ms State. But now, you can't find many kids who think like that. They are too removed from that kind of logic.

But I do agree with you on how we like to be pro-black only when pertains to going to college. What about the neighborhoods we live, the companies we work for..etc.. Not that I advocate we all quit our jobs or go storming into each our jobs demanding we have an African American on the board or we will boycott work.

I mean, we get on the kids today for forgoing HBCUs for the BCS schools, but obviously black prep athletes have been doing it since integration.

Here is an excerpt from the brilliant book Forty Million Dollar Slaves written by William C. Rhoden:

Integration would give blacks the access to that big stage they craved.

Many black athletes no longer felt as if the place where they grew up was home. As the profitability of the sports industry--starting at the college level--increased, the disconnection imposed by white schools on black athletes became more deliberate and pronounced.

HBCUs got complacent when it came to upgrading facilities, increasing budgets and making athletics a healthy source of revenue and boost the reputation of the school.

Basically, HBCU leadership took for granted that while some great black athletes were going to white schools, most would still attend HBCUs just because it was tradition to do so. That turned out not to be the case.

Y'all Know.....

.....it is tough for a dirt poor kid or his family to resist money for himself or his family, the latest in fashion clothes, jewelry, electronics(cell phone, DVD players, game boys, etc.)

......a kid can get his family's "lean to" home repaired with a new roof or anything that protects them from the elements.......or get a new house in general????? ...ain't that right Earl Campbell........Y'all do realize that there are BLACK people in the U.S. who are indentured servants (sharecroppers) or who think they are because their father, grandfather or great-grandfather was tied to the system they live under now......

.......they get food in the pantry.....their family members get the promise of jobs, vehicles and other incentives to go to this or that University.

.......there are cases where "if you sign with us we guarantee you that your sister/brother, son/daughter will be able to come to this school absolutely free"(of course we all know that some rich Alumni is footing the bill).

........other incentives include spending the day at ESPN HQ and doing a tape of yourself in a mock broadcast, being wined and dined at some of the swankest restaurants in the U.S., meeting certain celebrities and or politicians. Ryan Perilleau(sp) got to spend the day(ALL DAY) with the President of JAX St Univ besides getting his 2006 Escalade upgraded to a 2008 and getting one of his girlfriend admitted into school with him.

........the lure of being on T.V. every week and going to and participating in certain bowl games....possibly being invited to professional tryouts and don't for get the lure of dem "Becky's" that are used to help lure other unsuspecting players into their athletic mills where they major in General Studies or Recreation Mgmt that does not lead them to a substantial degree that makes them marketable when their sports life is over.

........the PWC's know what to say and what to do to get the athletes that they want.

Will this kind of boycott be ever be successful.......I don't know but when those 'Blue Chip Studs' from within ones own state start signing with HBCU's or even neighboring states pwc's or cross state rivals and they start whooping SC on a consistent basis.......that's when you'll see some things change and more consideration given to people of color. Let SC have a slim signing class and not be able to put a competitive (revenue generating) product on the field or on the court.............you'll definitely get somebody's attention because if there is one thing that Mr. Charlie understands and covets is...........$$$MONEY$$$.

Just think if all the black recruits went to HBCUs, the tide would turn and the media would be force to cover us because this is where the talent would be. Everything that they do at the other schools they could do it at HBCUs and make our schools better.

The media didn't cover us when we had all the talent in the 50's and 60's. What makes you so sure it would change now?

The media didn't cover us when we had all the talent in the 50's and 60's. What makes you so sure it would change now?

If we want to try and attract more of our kids back to our HBCUs then we must present a better product to be sold. Plus we need to start recruiting the best AVAILABLE athlete instead of just the black athlete.

Why is it so important to some of us for the best black athletes choose HBCUs? Is it about winning, generating money or it is about wanting to be just like our PWC brothers?

If I was a young kid coming out of college and the top level BCS schools offered me scholarships, and there were a few from HBCUs, I probably would pick the BCS schools.

When you factor in television exposure, facilities and all the ancillary and the ability to win a national championship. If any young black basketball player watched Duke-UAPB or Morgan-West Virgina, why would they choose the HBCU after watching those teams get skull drug in those games? Why would the best black athletes pick Grambling State over Georgetown when the Tigers have no basketball history what so ever?

If the very best athletic programs want your services, why would you turn it down to attend FCS schools for football or to play basketball in a conference that features the worst RPI in the country and struggling to make it financially?

Yall are looking at now, im looking at the future. Nobody will show up to see these white boys play at them schools. We bring the talent back to where it belongs and we keep the money where it belongs. 50s and 60s wasnt that many fortunate blacks. Its a different age, we have the tools and we need to use them.

You answered your own question. Folks like you who chase the other man's dream.

And nowadays if youre cold enough at what you do the media will come trust me.

Chris Webber criticized black colleges for not having built better facilities, not having put themselves in a position of leverage during the time when they had the monopoly on black athletes, to acquire the things that would make them more attractive to blue-chip black athletes: better facilities, larger arenas, more up to date training facilities and television contracts.

"A lot of people put pressure on me (to go to an HBCU), like, 'Come on, Chris, you can change it around, you can change it around.' But I think the process has to start within the black colleges."

"Playing on BET is not good enough for me," he said. "Just like me playing on MTV is not good enough. I want the world to see. In a way I feel guilty because we could have changed that rhyme. But we had to do what was best for us at the time. But we (The Fab Five) talked a lot about going to black colleges."

And how do we explain all the great black prep athletes in the 60s and 70s going to BCS schools instead of HBCUs? Were those young men selfish? How do you explain former HBCU athletes having their kids play at BCS schools. This just did not start with the kids of today. This started 40 years ago.

And what have HBCUs done to step their game up to attract these kids?

I mean, I read a story about the Alcorn basketball team from a few years ago and they are barely making it when it comes to the economic landscape of the athletic department.

Duke, North Carolina, USC, Notre Dame, Florida and all these schools just did not get good overnight. These schools and the supporters of the schools invested in the athletic department over a period of years.

The way the laws are set up now any group can focus on any particular area of politics and not have to worry about the other agenda. This is just like "whomever owns the most land has the most say-so!" That would seriously hurt their chances of getting those good recruits but to be honest I don't think it will carry over because don't many African Americans go to South Carolina for baseball, BUT I sure hope they defeat it and also they need to do the same thing in Mississippi (it will never happen that way here).

Preach GF!!.... some of these folk in here at holding the flag for these WTs.. to where WT ain't gotta do nothing but sit back and watch us argue if we need to do better for ourselves or not....

And nowadays if youre cold enough at what you do the media will come trust me.

Exactly if most of the talent being poured into the NFL is from HBCUs....You have to be WHOOPED by WT to think coverage won't pick up for HBCUs big time....

In this day and age WT will not be able to RUN from the HBCUs and be "respected" like they were back in the day....

Blacks have too long of a track record in the NFL... "People may be racist, but people ain't STUPID"....

They know ain't no all of a sudden WT don't got faster and BETTER than black athletes....

Ima say this again..
WHAT the FN big fascination with SOME FN facilities?!?!?!?!..:retard:

A FN BENCH is a BENCH a FN bar bell is a FN bar bell... I don't give a damn how pretty it look or what HUGE space it's in... it all work the SAME....

The have folk that work out with trainers and can't get in better shape than most folk in JAIL......

Where the F do this thinking come from.... "You must have OFF THE CHAIN facilities" to get recruits.....

What they plan on LIVING in the Damn facilities?...:retard:

Why wouldn't they frat? Tell me why no media outlet would show up? With no black players to compete against.........they will look GREAT to the white public. LSU, Texas, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Florida and others will still pack the stands. They will still be the power conferences because unless we have the revenue to move up so we can play against them regularly......they will never play us. So yeah you will get some networks to televise a game or so to see the next coming of a Jerry Rice or Walter Payton. Sure they will do it the same way they followed McNair. I get that. But make no mistake about it. We would not be getting NBC to boot Notre Dame off the air to televise our schools. They would air the white boys because their fans would want to see them. The only reason we got brothers playing at these schools is because the Southern schools got tired of getting their arsed kick by teams with black players mixed in against their all white teams. But if all the PWCs had nothing but white players. Then they would just have at it. Now we as blacks would not look at that isht on TV. But we don't make up enough population to affect the ratings for schools in the SEC, Big 10, Pac 10 or Big 12.

But college football and how folks are televised goes deeper than just having the players. The Big 10 can suck and will still be on TV. Hell they got their own network. The only thing the players boycotting PWCs will do is cause the schools to get the NCAA to allow them to pay the kids legally and guess what will happen........our kids will be right back over there playing ball. You already know it is all about the Benjamins. I think Strawdog pointed that out in his post. You think Nike CEO and founder Phil Knight is going to stop giving to Oregon because they have no black players and start funding HBCUs because the better players are there?

It may not be the 50s or 60s. But the mindset aint all that changed. Look at how these white folks are acting with Obama in charge. Man these white boys in the South would consider it a victory if they could go back to all white teams. Just as long as they don't have to play against any of us.

White folk that don't watch these already will not just start watching Juke...

On the other hand.... you would be surprised at the population of blacks that watch PWC ball....

The small percentage of the black population that actually attended college at a HBCU don't watch HBCU ball for that sole reason... "Talent"......

I ain't saying we will automatically top the PWC ratings...

But you will see a shift..... PWC ratings going down and HBCU attendance and ratings going up...

Our attendance pick up, doesn't that mean our schools make more money and could soon afford to play the PWCs?

Not saying facilities are the end-all be-all. But, it does matter to alot of these kids, now days. And, that's something the society of sports has grown to be accustomed to, spanning over decades. Esp, if they know certain facilities produce the thing that might be down the hall from said lavish facilities (trophy room).

If you're looking to move to another neighborhood...and, you do the little house tours...the way things are set up effect your thinking. The neighborhoods...school systems...all of that. If the D1's have a brighter and more elaborate showroom than HBCU's, then...:noidea:

It's no different to these kids that are looking for the quickest and more comfortable way of making it to where they're trying to get to. If you know everything is accessible at this D1 school...and, you're going to have to either ask, or ask 2 and 3 times for something at an HBCU...which one do you think these kids are going to pick?

I remember my freshman year we worked out at the AAC (folks from Jackson State know what I'm talking about) There were two weight rooms in that facility. One was the women's weight room. The other was the men's weight room. They were smaller than elementary school classrooms and had throwback outdated equipment. We all hated it.

The weight room the football teams used was no better. It was a much bigger room, but still had pretty old equipment in it. Fortunately J-State constructed a more modern training facility for its athletes years later.

But it is not just the weight room. It is having better access to training aids like whirlpools, training tables, recovery aids etc. Having a full training staff that is equipped to meet the needs of the athletes on a daily basis.

There were some practice days were we did not have a trainer available because they were with another team or in class.

I was watching a documentary about the Auburn football team around 2002. The athletes had not only access to a nutritionists, but own dining area filled with food intended to meet the athletic needs of each player.

We had to eat the same crap everyone else ate during dining hours.

Some schools like Oregon do have lounging areas for athletes only that have video games, TVs, pool tables and other amenities such as a juice bar that HBCUs can't touch.

So yes, facilities are very important. I mean, when you have everything at your disposal, that is the school kids are more willing to select.

It is no different than pro sports free-agents. Sure, they care about basketball, football or baseball stuff. But they also care about night life, neighborhoods, weather, schools and all that stuff in addition to dollars. Why do you guys think so many people are touting LeBron to the Knicks?

Not because they have a good basketball team. But because he has the potential to grow his brand in the largest media market in the U.S. Stuff aside from sport matters to athletes.

The athletes who do end up choosing HBCUs often wonder why they bothered. In an effort to really understand what's going on -- and not going on -- at his schools, Duer Sharp regularly meets with the members of the SWAC Student-Athlete Advisory Council.

What he hears isn't good.

"A lot of our athletes are disgruntled," Sharp said. "They're frustrated by what they don't have, and many of them leave unhappy with the experience."

Sharp said the real blame lies with the individual institutions. His office constantly gets calls about sloppy fields or lousy facilities, but he is powerless to change them.

He knows the schools are tapped out, that the basketball teams see almost none of the money they bring in from guaranteed games, that the NCAA Tournament opening-round game has almost solidified his member schools as one-and-done in March, and that the gate at football and basketball home games barely makes a dent in the overall expenses of each sport.

But he also believes that it is up to the schools to ask the state -- all of the SWAC schools are state institutions -- for help.

Doug Williams believes it is up to the HBCUs to grow what they have, to back the rivalries and make an almost internal championship among the member schools. Let the outside competitions -- the I-AA football playoffs, the NCAA tourney -- be an additional carrot, but turn the heart and soul of the HBCUs into the schools' strength and income source.

It is a hopeful, if not altogether easy plan to pull off, but to Williams the choice is simple.

"You can't say whether it's good or it's bad; it is what it is," he said. "We have to roll with the punches. We have to find a way to form our own championships, to be inclusive and make sure all of these schools start making money. The bottom line, we have to survive. That needs to be our goal."

Floyd Kerr, athletics director at Morgan State, says the lack of talent isn't explained simply by integration. He also believes black schools did not properly prepare for a future without the comparative talent advantage they'd held since they began playing football.

"When integration hit and majority institutions began to extract from HBCU talent pools, HBCUs did not counter that by adjusting to compete on the resource side," says Kerr, who was AD at Southern

from 2000 to '04. "

Hayes says recruiting elite black talent has become "all but impossible," which he blames on the media and community expectations rather than facilities.

But if something stops an athlete from playing at a bigger school, Hayes says, black schools become attractive. After high schools place a hot recruit at a big school, "they'd be glad to call me about a guy with a 1.7 (grade-point average) and want me to fix that deal.

And that underscores the difficulties black colleges face. Players once went to black schools because they had no other options, and now the players who attend historically black colleges and universities often do so for the same reason.

I tihnk you guys for get something-if the blacks boycott the PWCs. The PWC will just go after Hispanics and other races. Go to a soccer game and see how pack it will be with Hispanics.

Us not being at those PWCs will just open the flood gate and help us ALL if Michigan fields an all Hispanic Fab Five or Duke fields an Asian version thier 92team. And they blow out an all black Jackson State & Alcorn State teams in the tourney.

And most folks would love to see few blacks on these teams-why? How many scandals in college feature us versus them? Sure white boys go wild too but the main guys clowing is us.

The small percentage of the black population that actually attended college at a HBCU don't watch HBCU ball for that sole reason... "Talent"......

Greatest example? PV vs Grambling at the Cotton Bowl. I have YET to meet a person that goes to game to see the game. They go to see the band and LEAVE before the second half. This was happening before PV's 0-81 record.

Hayes says recruiting elite black talent has become "all but impossible," which he blames on the media and community expectations rather than facilities.

What about the image the school puts out?
Who do you expect to attract to your team if this is the MAIN thing recruits hear from YOUR players, YOUR students & folks that played your team.
"We smoke weed before, during and after the game and sometimes with the coach."
It does not matter if other schools do it. Just the fact a school was proud of that and bragged about it to everybody was enough to turn folks away.
If you are wondering what SWAC school it was-your football set a record for losses in a row.
