Reaching the Southwestern Athletic Conference tournament used to be a given for Alabama A&M, which advanced there its first five years in the league and won the title in 2005.
Since then, not only has A&M failed to win a game in the tournament, the Bulldogs have had a hard time getting there.
After Saturday night's 77-71 home loss to Texas Southern, A&M is in danger of missing the tournament for the second time in three years.
"We've made it hard on ourselves," coach Vann Pettaway said.
A&M sits in eighth place with three games to play. The top eight teams advance to tournament in Birmingham on March 11-14.
The Bulldogs (7-16, 5-10) host Prairie View (13-15, 9-6) tonight in their final home game. Tipoff is 7:30.
Prior to the Texas Southern loss, Pettaway said his team needed two wins to secure a postseason berth. That hasn't changed.
A&M outlasted Prairie View a month ago 77-73 in overtime in Texas, but the Panthers are currently in fourth place and are 4-4 on the road in league play. The Bulldogs are just 6-6 at home this season, including 4-4 in SWAC games.
"We're in a must-win situation," said Pettaway, whose team has lost five straight games. "If we don't win, we've got to have other teams help us."
A&M closes the regular season at Grambling on Thursday and at Jackson State on Saturday.
Grambling (6-20, 4-11) and Alcorn State (6-23, 4-12) trail A&M in the standings. The Tigers have lost six straight games, while the Braves have lost four of their last five.
Despite all of that, first and foremost on Pettaway's mind is Prairie View.
"We've got to do whatever is necessary to win the game," he said. "We've got to be ready to battle for 40 minutes."
The Bulldogs will be without center John Smith tonight. Smith was ejected against Texas Southern after being whistled for his second technical foul with 14:21 left in the game.
"That's going to make it tough," Pettaway said, "but it's something we're going to have to fight through if we want to make the tournament."
