The Southern University Department of Athletics captured its fifth consecutive SWAC Commissioner's Cup (named the Dr. James Frank Award) for overall excellence among its sponsored sports. Southern's men's programs captured the "C.D. Henry Award" for the top program among men's sports and Jackson State's women grabbed the "Barbara Jacket / Sadie Magee Award" signifying the top SWAC women's sports program.

The Jackson State women edged Southern by a score of 84.0 points to 83.5 points for the Women's All-Sports Trophy. The Lady Tigers captured the Golf title, tied with Southern for the basketball title, and finished in the top five of ten SWAC women's championships. For Southern, after tying for the basketball title the Jaguars finished second in three of ten sports. Texas Southern and Grambling State tied for third place (69.5), just ahead of Alabama State (68) and Prairie View A&M. Mississippi Valley State and Alabama A&M tied for eighth (60.5) followed Alcorn State and Ark.-Pine Bluff.

Southern's men placed in the top five in seven of eight sports for a total of 70 points. Grambling State finished in second place (65 points) after capturing two championships (football & outdoor track), finishing second in basketball and among the top three in two other sports (indoor track, cross-country and tennis). Prairie View A&M edged out Jackson State for third place 62.5 points to 60.5 points, followed by Alabama A&M (54.5), Alabama State (48.5), Alcorn State (48). Texas Southern (47.5), Mississippi Valley State (40.5) and Ark.-Pine Bluff (24) rounded out the men's finishers.

Congrats Jags.

If we'd have just gone to the damn baseball tourney, we woulda been 2nd place for the C. D. Henry. If we win the tourney we win the C. D. Henry, too, and the Commissioner's Cup. :smh:

I was wondering how we fell so low and I see were were DEAD last ....behind the BAMA's in baseball and 9th place in football. :( Only TxSO was worse than us.

But Mason promised last year that he wanted us to win the Women's championship since we were good at winning the Men's championship. I hope the women's teams continue to improve. That is normally not our strongest unit but CONGRATS to the Lady TIGERS!!

Not bad for a football school!! :D

LOL@DonTiger. Well.... :emlaugh:

Our men's teams have shown GREAT increases. Even w/ that abysmal bball team. :retard: We did well, considering. The 06-07 year promises to be one that we will be greatly excited about. We haven't gone VVVV in any sport. We've been ^^^^^^.

It starts w/ football. Bring the commish cup to where it belongs! To that lil' school on the prairie. :)
