smh.. might as well post it...

I love HBCUs. For all the athletics competitiveness we have amongst each other, believe me when I say I have a profound respect for all HBCUs. Mississippi could easily get a lottery and provide funding to these schools. But we won't do that. Shut the black schools down. I can't get with that. These schools have a purpose, and only when there is no other alternatives am I willing to consider advocating closing one of our schools. We haven't reached a last resort yet.

I agree Rob. Why can't we close some of these PWC's? Why must we be the ones who always assimilate into society? Our schools were founded with a purpose. We didn't create the disparity in our communities. In all honesty, these state PWC's are the ones turning out the lowest educated folks in society. We buy into the belief that their schools are hard because they give you busy work. That's not hard, that being lazy so their professors don't have to teach.

Im with you on the lottery thing... same thing going on in Alabama... at least yall have casinos.... these Bible Belt Christians not having that in Alabama.

yeah thats why I said other than the name change....im sure JSU folks would still wear Jackson State paro.... same thing when Arkansas AM&N being changed to UAPB or Tuskegee and Hampton being changed from Institute to University. When I go to these campuses I still see Tuskegee Institute or Arkansas AM&N paro for the older alumni.

I sure would wear JSU stuff but any support would stop and I would not care if the place closed it's door's if it became some bullcrap Jacob State or MLK State.
I didn't attend a school that was named Jacob State and I would not support or care about a Jacob State in any form or fashion.
I would never set foot on that campus again.

BTW:
Have ya'll read the comments at the bottom of the page.
Had to put my 2 cents in about merging Ole Miss and Mississippi State.
That fool has opened up a firestorm.
By 5pm, he will have zero support.

Ole Miss or Mississippi State dont have enrollment issues...Alcorn is at around 3000 and MVSU around 2000 approx. Wasnt there word of closing MUW?

Sports is a big reason why PWCs don't have enrollment issue while the HBCUs so..

Even here in Louisiana that daym Saban or was it Miles that made it to where a athlete from LSU couldn't leave to play anywhere else in state...

They are cutting away at the music programs..... HBCUs are not getting fair funding frmo the States.... HBCUs are being made to look very UNattractive to all kids leaving school including our urban area public school kids...

Not the point.
The point is that everytime merging comes up, only the HBCU's are mentioned.
MUW was thrown in this last time so people will point and say it's not just about the HBCU's.
MUW nor any other PWC has even been in the mix until now.
Delta State only have 4,000 so why are they NEVER mentioned for take over.
The last time, they wanted to merge Valley INTO Delta State and Alcorn into Mississippi state.

Get the direction of the merge crap in this state.
It ain't hard to figure out.

If the governor want to save the MOST money, then merging the two biggest budget money eaters in the state would make more sense..............Mississippi State and Ole Miss.
Those schools state budget's is more than the 3 HBCU's funding combined for 2 years.
Haley Barbour said himself that only $35 million would be saved from Merging the 3 HBCU's.
If he wanted to save money, he would not have said that all these backwoods JUCO would not be touched.
Most of them are located in rual white areas and eat more state funding combined than any of the 3 HBCU's.
How bout consolidating some of the 13 or so JUCO's into 5 and merge them into the University system to save money.
Let Alcorn, Valley or JSU take control over them in their prospective regions and let USM have the rest in the south.

as far as transferring.... ive heard of not being released to any school in the conference... never heard of any in state school.... an athlete can always leave, they would just have to sit out longer if not released.....HBCUs as well as other universitys get money based on enrollment.... of course a University with 15,000 students is going to get more money than a school with 2,000 students.

If Mississippi has 13 JUCOs... then thats where the governor needs to start FIRST.... Mississippi is too small to have that many JUCOs.

Delta State was mentioned early on this time......but it was stated in an article I read that some "high-power" player told Barbour and others to not mention Delta State in any of these Shenanigans....

This "high-power" person also warned them of messing with Land-grant institutions such as Alcorn.....because of the Federal Government ramifications involved. It could possibly backfire on them like it did the University of Tennessee.

why does Mississippi have THAT many JUCOs? Are the seniors performing that bad in high school, that their grades arent up to par to be accepted to a 4 year school? Thats ALOT of JUCOs for Mississippi.

I was about to say the same thing. Are they throwing these JUCO's up because more and more high school students are not truly college prepared or college material right out of high school?

Re: Jacobs State University?

He's not "one of our own" and this topic is already being discussed in the "yard" forum underneath the "prayer" forum.

Mason said Tuesday that the presentation - which is detailed and includes a proposal to make the new school's mascot the Phoenix - was not intended to be made public.

This man is educated, how in the hell did he think that this would not become public knowledge?

mississippi have always had that many JUCO's.
My oldest brother started out at Copiah Lincoln JUCO and he's 52 years old now.
People from these small towns that have these campuses just enroll there for convience and price.
These colleges drive the economics of those small towns and those politicians are not going to let them go cause in most cases, that is the largest employer in the area.

They just kept letting them expand over the years basically unchecked until probably year 2000.
A lot of people still believe that one of the Big 3, Ole Miss, mississippi State, or USM is the largest system in the state.
Those 3 schools are not as big, enrollment, as people think.
Ole Miss--17,000/ Miss State--15,000/ USM---16,000
Hinds JUCO has held that title forever and with the current economic situation, I would not be surprised if their enrollment was over 20,000 now.
