JSU coach confirms transfer of Pittman
It's official: Running back Jamaal Pittman is transferring from Ole Miss to Jackson State.
New Jackson State coach Rick Comegy confirmed Pittman's decision Wednesday night, shortly after being introduced at halftime of the Tigers' home basketball game against Alabama State.
Pittman, who will have one year of eligibility remaining, is expected to enroll at JSU this month and will be able to participate in spring drills.
"We got his release from Ole Miss; everything looks good," Comegy said. "We're happy to have him. He adds another dimension to our football team. It gives us another big back. We've already got David Kennebrew (leading rusher the past three seasons) and now we add Jamaal. Can you imagine having both of them in the backfield in short-yardage situations?"
Pittman was a high school All-American while at Columbia High. But his high school success didn't carry over to Ole Miss, where his four-year career was riddled with injuries and off-the-field troubles, including two torn knee ligaments and his arrest on a felony gun charge for allegedly waving a loaded pistol at a Memphis police officer.
Pittman rushed for 353 yards and one touchdown on 77 carries in his Ole Miss career.
Comegy hinted that Pittman could get a look at linebacker, too. "He's a guy we can play on offense and defense," Comegy said.
Pittman joins Pearl River Community College standout quarterback Jimmy Oliver, who signed with JSU last week.
