Based on the reasoning below in red, would you support such an ordinance? Why or why not?

Vote postponed on proposed beer, wine ordinance in Jackson

By Kathleen Baydala

The Jackson City Council?s Planning Committee again postponed a vote on a proposed ordinance that would limit the sale of beer and wine coolers within city limits.

The new ordinance would prohibit places, such as convenience stores, from selling beer and light wine for off-premise consumption between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. Sundays through Thursdays and 2-7 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays.

It would not affect restaurants or bars.

Stokes proposed the ordinance in November 2006, stating that current all-hours sales contributes to crime and drunk driving.

This line of thinking is why I can't get a drink at some of my favorite spots (restaurants) after I get out of my grad classes at night. They feel they need to have a last call much earlier than the time they actually close. I went to Ruby Tuesday at 8:30 to find the doors were closed. An employee told me that the manager wanted the last call early to eliminate problems/etc. I feel the manager is copping out, but hey that's life. If they don't want my money.. Oh well..

I am against the ordinance because I feel the start of restriction in other areas also. Frank Melton has already decimated the adult entertainment industry in this city, but I digress. I do not buy beer at stores and get drunk on the way home. I am sure there are some that do. I also do not buy beer late at night unless I am having a party and we have passed the hat due to a lack of beverages (rarely). This situation, however is not about me. There are plenty of DUI cases stemming from restaurants and bars. There are supposed to be safeguards in place to assure drunken people are not allowed to drive, and furthermore those who are deemed "buzzed" to be cut off so they can "walk it off". When was the last time any of you have seen a person cut off who was not acting a donkey, or passed out, or the ultimate "calling earl"? I can not think of an instance in recent history.

I am more in favor of creating precincts where you can buy/sell alcohol (Much like the DFW... much to my chagrin) after certain hours. Patrol those areas heavily and if indeed there is a correlation, then it will be discovered by all the drunkards found in these precincts versus the rest of the city. I will most surely guarantee there will only be a marginal increase of arrests.

I support it. Buying beer and whine after a certain hour means you really have plans on drinking it RIGHT THEN as opposed to getting a 12 pack on the way home from work. If I'm buying a 12 pack at 2:00am, then more than likely I want to drink it at 2:00am. If I buy it at 6:00pm on my way home from work, then more than likely I want to drink it later on that night.

How many of us have RUSHED to the liquor store before it closes to NOT drink shortly after? I have YET to high tail it down the street at 8:30pm to get some Patron to drink 5 days later. However, I have stopped a the liquor store on my way home from work and picked up some Patron and didn't open the bottle for days later.

I have bought beer at 2 in the morning coming home from the club because I had to get on a bus, or had a road trip in the morning. I had no time to buy beer the next day. Sometimes I would forget to put them in the fridge, but I have never cracked open the stash that late at night. I guess I am part of the community who hates to run out. If I see the store open, and I think I might be drinking that in the next few days, I'll pick it up. I am not going to turn up a bottle of Tito Vodka on the way home. Now the better question is should they sell me the beer in the first place considering I just got in from the club... But alas... I am shole glad I stay in Jacktown.

I would support it. The cut off hours are reasonable.

What brought this about? Has there been a lot of recent DUIs, accidents, robberies or something that's been related to alcohol consumption?

Kenneth Stokes' braindead ass.

That store is still open at the corner of Robinson and Prentiss.
That was some good beer for $1.80 a half gallon/ $3 for a whole gallon of draft......................KILLIAM's RED!
Too bad they quit selling it like that................Kept you from paying all that money for draft in a KEG.:ebrow:

And yeah....................BIG EDDIE would be serious about that "Get yo own" too.
Saw him about 2 years ago.
Said he was moving back to Houston from the ATL.

LOL. Big Eddie used to have me dying......I used talk with all the time when both of us were living in H-town. He had a cool job with the City of Houston before he moved to the ATL. I was like Eddie they let you have a gov'ment job. :lmao:

LOL at frat...........you shole do keep a stock of that red stripe.......

I agree........it will not deter folks from getting lit up and being out there. The clubs and bars will still be open......

:topic:

Hey frat do you remember when we could go get beer in a plastic milk container back in the day......there was a spot close to JSU on Pearl St I believe. I just thought about that and seeing Big Eddie come out with a case of beer for just himself and saying that we had to get our own.......:goof:

JR when I first hit the yard we use to hit the short stop to get those gallons of Killians and all sorts of things 18 year olds were not suppose to get.
I was sad to see it had closed. They are trying to clean up Lynch.

In Little Rock and Pine Bluff you can't buy alcohol after 2AM. No alcolhol sales on Sundays. According to the latest FBI statistics,Little Rock and Pine Bluff rank in the Top 100 for violent crime. A lack of and person's desire to received money illegally causes crime.

Honestly, I can see what they are trying to do with implementing this type of ruling because it will definitely help curtail "some" of the alcohol-related crimes that have plagued the inner city of Jackson for a while now!

Frankly, here in PA you can't even get liquor after 7:00 unless you go to what they call a "State Store!" This is basically a state driven store ---yes...you know the state had to get their hand in this somehow :smh: ----where you can buy wine and liquor at a very reasonable price since they purchase it from vendors in bulk! Hell, for only $30 I can come out of the State Store with 3-4 nice bottles of wine aged from 1997 with supreme taste! Beer nor liquor (they are seperated here in PA and YOU WILL NEVER FIND THEM IN THE SAME STORE TOGETHER  ) is sold on Sunday...PERIOD. In some lenient places  you have to go to a bar and pay an over-priced amount for a six pack on a Sunday between the times of 3:00-8:00! You can give it up for buying any liquor on a Sunday in Pennsylvania though!

To purchase beer, you must go to the Beer Store (not corner store--because none of the gas stations, walmarts or any other convenience store sell it--- and you are required to buy the beer buy the case. So in other words, you can't purchase a six pack of beer or even a 12 pack. You have to buy the damn case which consists of two 16 packs! And to make matters worse, you can't even switch up the two cases that you want like a 16 of Stella Artois and a 16 of Negra Modelo's! :redhot:

Man, my beer game has really stepped up since I've been here. They got beers here that I aint NEVER heard of in my life! I guess that's the only good thing about it! The beer store is basically a HUGE refrigerated store that will have beers in stock from the ENTIRE WORLD! The got all European beers, Mexican.....you name it!

I rest my case....:shame:

Instead of concentrating on halting legal beer/wine sales during a certain time, they should be concentrating on halting illegal drug/crack sales all the time!!!!

Mofos don't rob people cuz they want a sip of beer, but they will rob you for a hit of the pipe.

Yep.....................Alway's have been this way.

If this passes, it will change nothing as far as crime or anything else.
People just passing "feel good" laws as usual.

This might be true Stag but you got to start somewhere I believe. There is a lot of places that have similar laws like this. I really dont have a problem with it. If I need beer and wine I will have it long before this time. I dont need to be going out this time of night for alcohol anyway.

I am glad I am not in PA because I would be drinking my arse off on those beers. I would be just trying shat.

It was more than just there it was sold at all I believe they were Stop N Go stations, of course most of them was withing a 5 miles radius of JState. I remember waking up 2 and 3 in the morning and waking up a roommate or anybody in hall to walk to the store. LOL Damn about time we made it back to the yard it was gone. Damn, Stag that was about 17 or 18 yrs ago. Damn I am old. LMAO

I hear you, but this ain't gonna stop 1 crime.

Remember how the youth curfew was supposed to stop crimes by teens in this city.
Well, that thing has been in place for 4 years now and these little mofo's are still on the street's later than I am, commiting all types of crimes.

If loitering around stores that sale beer is the reason for crime happening, then why not enfore the no loitering laws and open container laws.

That would be effective ....................... Cutting beer sales won't because that same person with crime on his mind would just walk down the street and replace that BUDWISER with some plane ole GREEN BUDS and go back to illegal business as usual.

Their are only 3 states who don't allow alcohol sales on Sunday. Ga, Indiana and I forget the other one.

:kaioken: ARKANSAS

I know b/c i live here. We just just stock up on Saturday for Sunday. :goof:

Georgia is the only Southern state to have a complete ban on Sunday sales. Now they might sell it in Arkansas, but it's on the books that they can if the counties vote on it. In Ga it is not even on the books. Pa, Ga, and In are the only states to not have it on the books period.

Is that a Mississippi Law? I know in northeast Mississippi liquor can't be sold on Sundays at all.
