You Got Folks Making More HBCU Band Highlight Videos Than Football Highlight Videos

I was looking for some SU and Langton football highlight videos on YouTube and I couldn't find one. But, I found at least 20-25 band highlight videos produced by 4-5 different people. Why won't some of these HBCUs hire 1-2 folks making band videos to produce football highlight videos and football content videos? The band stuff is cool but it's really repetitive to produce all those band videos. We need to push HBCU football more. And, some of the band videos are really high quality. I can only imagine how good they could make football content videos look. With the Internet and mediums like YouTube and Vimeo there's no excuse for HBCU football programs not to have a strong media presence.

SU does have a strong media presence. Probably the best in HBCU sports. You aren’t looking in the right places for SU football content

Now here's where it gets tricky. How many of those people that are getting paid by YouTube don't have permission to monetize on the bands (expressed written consent for the content)?

That's true. I know the Juke has their own official band channel on Youtube and as someone mentioned, some of those videos have over a million views so the little money that those generate goes to the band (because it takes a LOT of views to make significant money on Youtube. Like even with those videos of one million views that the Juke has, they probably made no more than a few thousands because Youtube is notorious for how little they pay per view plus the Juke channel would have to have an Adsense agreement so that they can make money from the ads that usually run on popular videos (and those people would actually have to watch all 30 seconds in order for SU to get paid)

It's not about making money right at this moment but positioning yourself to make money later by capitalizing on a certain market. Imagine you video bands but a company wants to contract you to video other events.

Actually, I don't think its tricky at all. If some of the bands REALLY have a problem with this, they can easily contact YouTube to have the content removed. But they would be foolish to do so. The real question should be, what is the worth of the extra publicity these bands get when their performances are published? How many times have the artists of the actual songs these bands perform go to Twitter to commend the bands for a job well done? It goes viral and then after that news outlets pick it up and it gains even more coverage and publicity.

Believe me, HBCU bands are well served due to the work that these VJ put in to give them coverage. Exposure is everything. Just ask Miles College.

Where are these 1million viewed band vids at. So I can see who’s getting paid off our bands. I don’t see any on YouTube.

But to touch on the topic, it would be nice to see every swac program have a sports media team as dedicated as the bands (Boom, Jukes, Ocean) media teams. These guys produce some good coverage and have the best quality/angles in the swac. The only other band that produce that level of quality (that I’ve seen) is THE AGGIES from A&T. Their footage is top notch as well. I could be missing a few. Not sure if Bethune has a team for their band. I don’t watch them.

Ive never had a problem with footage/highlights of JSU football & I’ve never complained about the quality but now that I’m thinking about it. Lol the Boom’s footage is higher quality.

There have been a few times I can remember but not many. Bobby Brown is probably the one that sticks out as far as recently happening

I can also remember someone recorded Valley performing a Jessie J song and got hit with a copyright claim

I agree that it is more about the exposure at this point than the money but in this day and age I still would rather the schools have it on their official channel. I also agree that any exposure is good exposure so if someone happens to record it and it goes viral, it's still good for the school

I'm looking at it from a music POV (since I have experience there). On one hand, if a person posts a rare 2Pac song, his estate isn't complaining about the exposure because the song is copyrighted. But if you get 15 people posting the same song, it takes away views from the original video.

Exposure is EVERYTHING!!!!! Free EXPOSURE! I’m just glad our bands don’t have to worry about exposure. That’s the least of their worries. Those vids are being uploaded in real-time now. Lol

Currently sitting at 1.7 million views.

Currently over 2 million views. This actually goes with what Kenn said about as long as you are getting exposure, it doesn't matter who put the video online (however imagine if all these views were on the Juke's channel)

MONEY

Where is the money for producing the highlights?????

A high quality camera is relatively inexpensive. Cell phones can produce 4K videos. I don't think it would cost more than a couple thousand bucks to hire 1-2 people to make football content. You don't need no big ass TV camera to make great videos today.

Well, from my understanding, the bands are required to get clearance/pay for the right to perform these songs. They can't simply just arrange and perform any given song on a dime without clearance. So if some reason folks are getting slapped with copyright claims, that's pretty much on the band directors for not taking care of business.

I'm looking at my posts on the Adele video. That video got 500K views in under a week thanks to For The Win posting it on their site and tweet

I'm assuming the Marvin Price person has some affiliation with the school as far as access to be able to film the band

True! But that just means you have to step your quality up lol And compete with the other VJs.
Make me (the viewer) want to look at your footage only & ignore the others.

You are right about that. The person who filmed it doesn't have any affiliation with Valley so it wasn't on us that he got hit with that claim. The other videos featuring the SWAC schools didn't have that issue

Why don't you do it?

Find out what it takes to get it done and then see it through to the end.

That's your task. Get to it.

You want to task me with something that some jokers is already getting paid for? I can't respect what you said. HBCU Sports Info. Directors should be doing that.

That's true as well. I got a better phone this year for all the Valley games I plan on attending (all the home games and probably the JSU and Grambling games). I have never claimed to be a professional (as of yet) but exposure is exposure. My videos from last year got over 10K views (most of those were from the Grambling, UAPB and JSU games).

Maybe better athletes and coaches would want to come to the HBCUs if they saw better HBCU sports content on the Internet. I bet I can good FCS PWI football content on the Internet.

Well, Without a doubt I believe the next viral vid just very well may be on the Jukes channel. Our bands have produced some quality footage over the past few seasons.
I feel like they’re producing better vids than the outside men now. That wasn’t the case back then when our bands didn’t have media teams.
