Wynton Marsalis says Hip Hop is more harmful to Black Folks than confederate statue

If he is talking mainstream YES.
If he is talking overall-NO.

It's sad that I can hear better hip hop on video games of artists (especially BLACK ONES) that I never heard or listen to white alternative radio stations to hear better hip hop.

I can't listen to the black radio stations as you have to bleep out 90% of the words if you can understand what they are saying.

IMO certain aspects of the hip hop culture is trash, poison and influences the blk community in the wrong way...

Exhibit A.

I agree.....but also feel worse about confederate statues......paying homage in the form of statues to mother rapist, sodomizers, murderers, maim practitioners, language stealing, human trafficking, slave holders everyday of one's life is repugnant.

He has a point....but we must remember Hip Hop today is nothing compared to Hip Hop of the late 80s and 90s. The message was different.

More importantly Hip Hop is a culture and rap is sub part of Hip Hop. Back in the day you would have rappers rappin....then some cats would start break dancing and also a great DJ. What I mean about a DJ is someone who is actually missing with records rather than the beat machine or a MacBook. The DJs were creating beats back in the day utilizing rock and roll, soul, disco, country, and jazz.

Today, the DJs and rappers are not innovative at all. During the 80s and 90s rappers told stories that you could clearly picture and follow in your mind.

This leads to my final statement....what the fuck are the Migos saying?

Let's not act like the early stages of hip hop didn't have the sexism and other negative aspects of the music that you all speak of. Don't go there. Yall sound like them Uncles always talking about back in my day we had this and had that...blahh blahhhh

it did and society hated it. Now its just like they don't care and the music isn't innovative.

All these male singers sound like the guy from empire singing. Computers have too much influence.

I think social media is more harmful. More folks have been shot, jumped on and killed over twitter, Instagram and Facebook in the last year than rap music. Anyone wanna place a bet on ? I personally enjoy blues better than any type music and it is going down also. These new artist suck. I meant ss Johnnie Taylor and Marvin Cease!

It was there but compared to today's form of hip hop its two totally different animals IMO...

I look at what he is saying like this...

Music influences people.

Hip Hop is a genre with a LOT of negative/destructive subject matter in it's current form.

As blk youth/community consume more hip hop they are being influenced by more negative/destructive content.

I see this as his argument...

As a black community we CAN'T just be woke with issues/injustices outside our community. Let's look within also.

True. As did the early comedians like Redd Foxx, Richard Prior, etc., probably influenced generations of cussin', n-word using funny folks. The difference today is you can't hide this stuff in your closet or where ever because everything is on the web.
