GRAMBLING - Conditioning started playing a factor as Grambling State freshmen and newcomers went through day two of two-a-day workouts.

The Tigers kick off the 2002 season on the road Aug. 31 as GSU plays McNeese State at 7 p.m.

GSU's coaching staff spent much of Tuesday's practice sessions working to build the new Tigers' stamina and endurance before veterans players begin practice Thursday.

"You can tell conditioning is a factor so we're just trying to build them up real quick to try to get them up to speed with the older guys," GSU offensive coordinator Melvin Spears said.

"These guys aren't all in the best shape and aren't used to the kind of practices we hold. They can build up in a hurry, it's just of matter of breaking them in and doing it right."

Spears said running back Henry Tolbert (5-9, 180) of Birmingham, Ala., has looked good early on as have offensive linemen Terrel Nunnery (6-4, 330) of New Orleans and Jamar Dorsey (6-3, 330) of Omaha, Neb.

"Tolbert has great moves and is a good receiver out of the backfield," Spears said. "If he keeps working hard, he could have a chance to help us. Nunnery and Dorsey look very strong and I'll think they'll be a factor at least as back-ups. They could even push to start."

Fan Day: Grambling State University's 2002 Tiger football team will hold its Fan/Media Day at noon Saturday at the Eddie G. Robinson Stadium Support Facility.

Coach Doug Williams, the GSU coaching staff and the 2002 Tigers will be available for pictures and will conduct interviews with members of the media before meeting with fans. Refreshments will be available and fans will be able to order tickets for GSU football games.
