Word out of Birmingham is they are expecting over 40,000 fans to be in
attendance at the SWAC Championship Game
..........which would make this
the 2nd largest crowd ever to attend the game since it's inception in 1999.
The largest crowd to see a SCG was the inaugural game in '99 when over
47,000 fans came to see SU vs. JSU. The smallest crowd to date was last
year, as attendance has been constantly declining, when only slightly more
than 20,000 came to see Grambling vs. AAMU.
It would not suprise me at all if in fact this years Game wound up drawing
THE Largest crowd ever for the reasons I stated in a previous thread that I
will not rehash. But with the weathermen predicting a day in the h-60's or low
70's.... The Buzz over the SWAC Offensive Player of the Year not being able
to take the field until the 3rd quarter............ and the fact that this will be
the 4th try for AAMU ..... Saturday should be Special.... and Crowded.

What makes it a lie....because y'all ain't in it? :smh:

I have heard much the same thing. We won't actually know until Saturday gets here, but with temperatures predicted to reach the low 70's in the latest forecasts, that attendance (and then some) is a very strong possibility.

Where did u get this info? Man I swear people be lying these days.

SWAC WORLD: Quarterback Quandary

Nick Deriso, CSN columnist

Both Alabama A&M and Arkansas-Pine Bluff arrive for this week's Southwestern Athletic Conference Championship Game having never won it. Both sit at 8-3, and have had three weeks to prepare.

Still, these teams finished the 2006 regular season in much different places.

A&M lost to Western Division cellar-dweller Prairie View in its finale 13-7, breaking the Panthers' seven-game losing streak. Meanwhile, UAPB was extending its own winning streak to seven with a 42-31 victory over Texas Southern.

"UAPB is the hottest team in black college football," A&M coach Anthony Jones has said. "It's going to be a heck of a matchup. It's not going to be an easy task and it shouldn't be to win a championship."

Kickoff is at 1 p.m. Saturday at Legion Field in Birmingham, Ala.

This is Pine Bluff's first-ever appearance in the title match, while A&M has advanced three times since 2000. A&M has never won the SWAC, while UAPB shared a title in the 1960s -- before the creation of this game.

Then, there's the quarterback issue. More on that in a moment.

CHECK THIS OUT: Look for more than a little urgency to win from Alabama A&M, which is losing seven starters on offense -- including its two best rushers and its top receiver. There's also the matter of its 0-3 record in the SWAC title game, with each lost since 2000 to Grambling.

IN THE HUDDLE: Junior A&M quarterback Kelcy Luke likely has a chip on his shoulder when it comes to his team's regular loss to Pine Bluff earlier this year. The Golden Lions slipped past Luke and the Bulldogs with a two-point win -- but only after Luke was stopped on a two-point conversion that allowed UAPB to run down the game clock. A&M had rallied from 23-7.

Luke was also ruled short on a touchdown try early in the game that would have put the Bulldogs up by two touchdowns.

QUOTABLE QUOTE OF THE WEEK: "What the SWAC has been able to accomplish is become a partner with the city. I don't know many conferences our size, or even bigger, that have a relationship with a municipality that we have. We'd have to think long and hard before we do something." -- League commissioner Robert Vowels, discussing recent bids by both Shreveport and Jackson, Miss., to lure the league offices away from Birmingham.

THE SWAC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME: This one might just come down to quarterback play, and A&M has the edge.

Mostly because UAPB won't have its starter -- at least early on.

Quarterback Chris Wallace, who led Pine Bluff to its first Western Division title, has been suspended for the first half of the SWAC title match after being ejected from the Golden Lions' season finale. Vowels upheld the suspension despite the league's struggles with attendance recently.

The inaugural SWAC Championship Game, pitting Southern vs. Jackson State in 1999, drew a record 47,621 fans. But crowds have thinned ever since, falling to 20,612 last season as GSU beat Alabama A&M.

SWAC officials are reporting 50 percent more tickets sales so far for Saturday's game, which has been bolstered by a favorable weather forecast and some related city-sponsored events.

A shame, then, that these two teams couldn't square off at full strength -- especially since the conference presumably could have deferred Wallace's punishment in order to bolster its own contest.

The bitter irony? A week after learning his suspension would stand, Wallace was named SWAC Offensive Player of the Year.

Oh, well.

Look for Pine Bluff to return to the one-dimensional look that Wallace broke them out of.

I guess they have taken average of the percentage of walk ups on game day for the past SWAC Championship games and added it to the pre-sale tickets to arrive at 40K projected attendance.

they couldn't have done that, cause with the absolutely lousy weather (at least in 03 and 04, cold, freezing rain), the walk ups had to be minimal.

tbf,
I wouldn't put too much stock in how fast/slow tix are going at A&M. They'll have the walk up crowd. PB folks will get their tix early.

50 percent of what?

their not going fast at AAMU......trust me on that....

Well lets look at this. Last year, weather had a big part to do with this game. By this time, weather had mad its decision on who was going and not going. It would not be unrealistic to say that pre-game ticket sales are up 50% this year compared to last year. There are a couple factors to consider.

1. Weather
2. UAPB first SCG

TBF, what makes you say AAMU are not buying tickets?

He can't answer you, Sperm. It's nothing but more of his fool talk.

don't know what makes him say it, but as of late yesterday, tix could still be gotten on the 50 yard line (thru ticketmaster)

we buy them when we get to the game.... same as Magic City Classic.
to each his own, but aint no way I would do that at a packed game, with reserved seating.

There is a considerable number of people here who HAVE purchased their tickets. I already have mine.

Again, with a forecast of low 70's for temps, plenty of folks will decide Saturday morning to attend or not. Even folks in Hsv, Atl, etc. Hsv only 90 minutes away and Atl is only 3 hours away.

I bought my folks tickets for the MCC on that Friday and I got some seats on the 7th row by the band. It was still over 66,000 folks at that game. Sorry TBF you are wrong once again. Keep trying and maybe SU will let you back in the nation. :emlaugh:

aint no such thing as reserved seating at a Black college game... who every pays for reserved seats is waisting money... buy a ticket and sit anywhere you want to. The same people who buy general admission tickets will be sitting on the 50 yard line.

They wouldn't be sitting on the 50 yard line in my reserved seat. Sorry, I guess I'm old. I'm gon sit in the place I paid to sit.

and every year, I see lots of folks at the MCC who have to get up and move outta folks seat.

That must be how it go down on Bama State side... I have NEVER seen it and I didnt even know the MCC had reserved tickets... I thought it was all general admission.

IMO the only stadiums that should have reserved seating is stadiums with chair back fold up seats....

Yeah them old folks don't play.
yup, them old folks will clear out a whole row of folks to get to their right seat.

That's why it's best to just gon and sitcho arse where you spose to sit and you won't have to look foolish if/when somebody comes for their seat (especially when it's packed)

Try it at an SU home game if someone bought those seats.

That would mean 30,918. But I do beleive it will top 40,000

NOPE, I CAN BELIEVE.

If AAMU shoot 15k their, I can believe 40,000k. UAPB students are leaving Friday right after graduation. Most will be shooting in on Friday.  I will try to make it.

What do you know about ticket sales? You give Tyrone a $5 at the back gate to get you in.

I can understand if AAMU's ticket sales are moving a little slower than years before. We have fall graduation on Saturday. That's around 400-500 students and their family members who will be in Huntsville to celebrate graduation. The SCG starts at 1:00p.m. The band even has to play for graduation and then take the bus ride to Birmingham. Many who would have been there before aren't thinking about going to a football game out of town on their graduation day. That's the only reason AAMU tickets sales would be slow though.

Even so, ticket sales are reported 50% higher than last year tbf. So what's the problem?
