Will New Orleans ever have a dark-skinned mayor (and a few other questions)?

NOLA politics are funny. I remember in 2008 when Cedric Richmond accused Helano Moreno of being on cocaine and she stormed out the debate to take a drug test.

It always have been. Honestly, it's never a dull moment in the Big Easy. It is always pretty women, plenty to drink (and eat), and hot mess going on. :emlaugh:

That's not the reason Sidney got 90% of the white vote in the mayors race. :emlaugh:

See you didn't clearly read my response. I didn't focus on race and what percentage a particular candidate got. Of course he got 90% of the white vote and a certain percentage of the black but when black folk are not getting out and voting of course the numbers will look like that. Find and post all of the returns from that race and you will see what I'm saying. At that time you had city where its majority were made up of black people. Sidney is a black ROMAN catholic in a city that a majority of white folk are ROMAN catholic. Sidney is a CREOLE from the 7th ward. When you have that old white New Orleans money backing you of course you're gonna win because they want something. If the Cannizaro family is backing you like they did for Sidney and Nagin the white vote is yours. You can believe what you want to believe from whatever source you have, I'm more closer to the situation than you think. Oh I forgot to mention that Sidney worked in the administration of Mayor Moon Landrieu so here's more information to back what I said. One more thing, when Moon came out of office and around the time Dutch got in office is when white flight was at its highest which saw the movement to Jefferson Parish in Metairie first then eventually Kenner.

I read what you posted chief. The bottom line is Sidney's New Orleans roots didn't put him over the top. White people put Sidney over the top because he was much more innocuous to white Orleanians than Bill. Black folks votes were split enough to give the White voters the power to elect the lesser of two evils (in their eyes). I say the lesser of two evils because as soon as Donald Mintz threw his hat in the ring, Sidney's white support was gutted. Old New Orleans money could not get anyone in office if blacks at the time voted overwhelmingly for one candidate. If white folks had the muscle you think, Donald Mintz would have beat Sidney and Marc. You always have folks that don't show up at the poll (nothing new). Hence, all of that creole, catholic, 7th ward stuff was a moot point (white folks in New Orleans don't care nothing about that...just another you know what to them). If it was up to black folk, Bill would have been mayor. Bill won 57% of the black vote......

That's exactly the way I see it.

Another interesting thing about New Orleans, most of New Orleans major properties are owned by the State. The only major investment New Orleans owns is the airport, which is out in Kenner, LA. Before the now Louis Armstrong Airport was built, the State owned the only major airport in New Orleans, which was the Lake Front Airport.

Alpha, I'm my source. :emlaugh: I was living in New Orleans when this was going on and a voting adult. Not to be funny but were you out of diapers at the time (speaking of being closer to the situation)?

Touche! I will decline any further comments on a public website due to my future political aspirations and connections. When you want to see just how close I am to the situation, we can do lunch. You would be amazed and your eyes would be opened to the New Orleans I was raised in. You're on the right track but you're headed in the opposite direction. I will be in Atlanta August 4th-11th, you have my number so hit me up for lunch on you.

We're talking New Orleans politics here. Sidney got the white vote for other reasons as well. Go back and read up on the history of Mintz family in New Orleans and you will see the importance of my reference to old New Orleans money. Why do you think Nagin beat Pennington even though Pennington was backed by Marc. The old new orleans money hand picked Nagin for his first go around. Now his second term was won because he put himself in the shoes of the average black person dealing with hurricane katrina issues. Moot point okay.

lol......You weren't close to the situation we're discussing because you're simply not old enough to have been. And just because you were raised in N.O. doesn't mean you know everything that happens there (particularly something that happens before your time and you're getting 2nd hand information on). And what is this Big Willy stuff about I have your number? :emlaugh: We haven't exchanged numbers or had any behind the scene discussions but we can.

Alpha, I don't need to read up on the Mintz family, I know who they are. :emlaugh: Nagin and Pennington election wasn't radically different. Split black votes and white folks vote was the deciding factor. If memory serves me correctly Nagin was connected with Cox and was favored by the white business establishment in the first run. It's really not that complicated (Marc backing Pennington and Dutch backing Bill). The formula in N.O. at the time was split the black vote when two blacks are running and whites vote for the lesser of two evils because no way was a white winning head up against a black.

Of course not as I wasn't referring to those earlier situations due to my age but many of the rest I was around. And you're right you don't have to from there to know everything you just need to know relevant important stuff that matters. I got you confused with another jag, at any rate I still want my lunch.

You almost have it. Remember the name Joseph Canizaro.

Sorry, but I have it and spelled it out. It is no mystery or secret. BTW, I vaguely remember Canizaro backing Donald Mintz. How did that work out for him? :emlaugh:

Alpha, I got some questions about Nola politics too. I will shoot them in the future. I have long been a student of the city.

Do you think Eddie Jordan should have resigned or stayed? The Parish ultimately loss that legal battle but everyone he indicted in those shootings went down. I was working at Clearchannel radio at the time that 99.5 WRNO started to put pressure on him to resign daily.

Did Pennington really clean up NOPD? Another guy from MPD left around the same time as him to run the Jackson Police Department. That is when all of the Frank Melton drug kingpin rumors started floating.

I remember the 08 race between Cannizaro and Capitelli. I believe Capitelli had got those bouncers that killed that black dude on bourbon street off and it hurt him bad during the election. There was another drunken white dude in that race who always get on the mic at events and start yelling about discrimination.. Lol.. I miss Nola.

Well this Cannizaro is the Donald Trump of New Orleans as it pertains to property development. The brother is the current DA of New Orleans.

Pop I have mixed views about whether if he stayed or left. Him being the first black DA was historic but his conviction rate as DA was horrible. I do think he should have thought about cleaning house in a different way. He went in there on them white folk guns blazing getting rid them. If I remember correctly I think the lawsuit ended up being around $3.7 million awarded. As far as his US Attorney conviction record you're talking about the guy that brought down the most powerful and liked governor this state ever had. Honestly I think Pennington actually made the biggest dent in reducing crime with his community policing initiatives. I mean putting NOPD sub stations in the hot spots like the projects made the criminals think hard before they committed a crime. He also got rid of a lot of those vigilante cops that let being police officer get to their head.

Wat do you think about Cedric Richmond? Ced is one of the coolest politicians I ever met. Walks around in a suit and Jordans.

I know Cedric very well. He and my cousin went to Ben Franklin and he grew up in New Orleans East. I think he an I joined the Zulu Club around the same time. He's one of those politicians that jumps on an issue until something is done about it. During his time in the Louisiana Legislature he would always wear the suit jacket, shirt, tie, jeans and either tennis or some type of casual shoe. To this day, the legislators come dressed like that on certain days.
