Will New Orleans ever have a dark-skinned mayor (and a few other questions)?

Nola had the Dutch, then Barthelemy, then Marc Morial then Nagin now Mitch. The city has never elected a mayor that couldn't pass the paper bag test (Nagin is borderline). Do you think the city is ready to embrace a dark-skinned leader?

Why have Chicago, L.A. and New York only been able to elect one black mayor despite having large AA populations?

What difference would having an AA Mayor in Chicago make? Is it just to say, "hey...we have a black mayor"?

Just a question. I have heard more than a few people opine that the black community in Chicago turned their back on the one brother that get elected

Harold Washington? He was poisoned. I was young so I don't know much about his election or what he did while he was in office. I've heard people say he only got in because the non-black votes were split so bad between the other candidates. :noidea:

I don't see why anybody would want to be Mayor of Chicago.

Yes, New Orleans will have another dark skinned Mayor when I run and win. The plans are already set in motion. When I start asking for campaign donations please feel to make a donation.

The fact that NOLA hasn't had a dark skin mayor has NOTHING to do with African Americans. Sidney Barthelemy loss the African American vote in 1986. However, he won nearly 90% of the white vote which secured the win for him. Bill won somewhere in the neighborhood of 57% of the black vote and Sidney had about 43%. BTW, Dutch supported Bill in that election........

The biggest question I doubt any of us would ever know the answer to would be why did the White folks vote for Sidney over Jefferson? Was Jefferson too dark or they didn't like him from the start? Seems like Jefferson stayed popular with Black people in New Orleans by getting elected to congress.

Sidney was perceived as more of someone that they could possibly identify with and perhaps persuade in key endeavors. Sidney back ground at one time had aspirations for the Catholic priesthood included in it too that appealed to them. On the other hand, you had the fiery liberal pro civil rights Mayor Morial backing Jefferson. That was as good a reason as any for whites not to vote for Jefferson.....

Basically they didn't like Jefferson from the start. I personally know the White person that Sidney had in-charge of the Streets Department. Lets just say, he definitely do business with a few White people that care very little for Blacks.

Easy answer. Jefferson was not a native New Orleanian as was Sidney. Sidney grew up in the 7th ward and later moved to the 8th ward and is a St. Aug Alum and still lives in his house on Franklin Ave. Jefferson is from North Louisiana and I think he moved to New Orleans in the 70's. As far as New Orleans people were concerned, he was never going to be Mayor but they did back him for Congress.

That's not the reason Sidney got 90% of the white vote in the mayors race. :emlaugh:

Jefferson is from Lake Providence, Louisiana, which is probably one of the furthest northeast locations in Louisiana, but it seemed like White New Orleanians were not going to let him be mayor, since he did get majority of the Black vote.

They turned on Sidney in the very next election though. Sidney was always an interesting character to me. He was a placeholder between the two Morials.

I wouldn't say they turned on him. He ran against Donald Mintz. Of course the white community was going to vote for the white guy. That following election between Mintz and Morial was one of the nastiest I've ever seen. If memory serves me correctly, Mintz found Marc's illegitimate child I believe on the Ivory Coast in Africa and threw that into the election mix. I vaguely remember him alleging Marc of cocaine use also. It's been a long while but I could vaguely recall some of that mess. :smh:  :emlaugh:

It doesn't take much, because I'm sure he showed some signs of Blackness once he got into office. But you know as well as I know, if you show any signs of Blackness in front of White folks that thought you were 100% pro-White, they will turn on you down in a heartbeat. The Morials got elected because they didn't have anyone to split the votes in a majority Black city.

And Donald Mintz lost in each race. Sidney did serve two terms.

NOLA politics are funny. I remember in 2008 when Cedric Richmond accused Helano Moreno of being on cocaine and she stormed out the debate to take a drug test.
