Why the I-AA playoffs are joke for SWAC schools ...

First of all, the SWAC is one best confernces in all of Division 1-aa football. It has huge fan base, great teams, and outstanding head football coaches. But I still believe we need to participate in 1-aa playoffs and play the classic week early. Also the SWAC definitely need to junk the Championship game and return back to playoffs..

However, I do supoort the idea of bringing back the Heritage Bowl between both MEAC and SWAC. We need have our second place teams play in Hertiage Bowl and first team should be playing in playoffs. This would give our confernce, players, and coaches more noterity and visibility as well. By participating in playoffs we can attract more top-tier athletes away from pwc's on 1-aa level period..

I truly believe either Alabama State or Southern Jaguars could easily have beaten likes of Montana Grizzles, Delaware Blue Hens, and others, probably advance to 1-aa title game..

There is a perception out here that dropping the SWAC Championship Game would allow SWAC programs to participate in the playoffs. This could not be further from the truth. There are several more important and prominent factors that would not allow SWAC programs the ability to participate in the playoffs besides the SWAC Championship Game. Until to issues are solved, it is irrelevant to talk about cancelling the SCG.

That begs the question what are the several more important and prominent factors that would not allow SWAC programs the ability to participate in the playoffs besides the SWAC Championship Game? Besides the Bayou and getting chosen of course? I think the schools just need to say we will participate if chosen and fill out the forms. If we look at the GPI as an indicator, in 2002 and 2001 #20 Grambling might have got an invite without an autobid.

(BTW, isn't it bad netiquette to reopen a thread over six months old?)

1) The record of the SWAC conference teams outside of Alabama State, Southern, and Grambling State whom classic event precludes them from participating in the classic since the formation of the SWAC Championship Game have not had records that would have earned them an opportunity to receive an at-large bid to playoffs.

2) Simply, the Bayou Classic and the Turkey Day Classic preclude Alabama State, Southern, and Grambling State programs you mention in your post from earning an at-large bid to the playoffs.

3) The current NCAA rules on automatics bids preclude the entire conference from earning an automatic bid.

Until these three issues above are resolved the SWAC Championship Game is not the most important and prominent factors that precludes the SWAC member institutions from participating in the NCAA playoffs. Again if the SWAC Championship Game was not initiated in 1999, they only SWAC team that would have earned an at-large bid to the playoffs would have been the 2001 team because of the 9-11 tragedy that push the playoffs back one week.

Question:

I may have seen the answer somewhere, but I can't remember.

Say JSU or Alcorn goes undefeated. Do they have the option to forgo participating in the SCG and instead go to the playoffs?

And please nobody tell me the SWAC office could make them, because I haven't seen that much backbone yet.

The East and West Champions are commited to play in the SCG. Now there is a slight possibilty that the 2nd place team could get a at-large bid, but I couldn't see that happening unless they have a 1 or 2 loss season.

They have to make this commitment to one or the other prior to the season according to the NCAA. But, it is my understanding that all SWAC school administrations are committed to the SWAC Championship Game first and then the NCAA Division I AA playoffs second.

.
Aside from Jafus's statement."They have to make this commitment to one or the other prior to the season according to the NCAA." If Jackson and Alcorn were to go the entire season undefeated and would rank in the top 10 and a few other teams in the top 10 having lost 2 o 3 games I can see one of them gettin a bid and the other going to SCG. But knowing the trend of the selection committee they would still get reamed.

Yeah i agree, had Alcorn beaten AAMU they would have possiby had a spot in the playoffs. I read it in a local newspaper, I don't know how much merit it held but it was stated.
